cs: pcmcia_socket0: cardbus cards are not supported
Hello, the cardbus/pcmcia-wlan-card (11ab:1faa) doesn't work on my laptop with debian lenny, 2.6.26-2-486: dmesg shows: cs: pcmcia_socket0: cardbus cards are not supported. or (with second slot) cs: pcmcia_socket1: cardbus cards are not supported. another card is working in the pcmcia-slots, so the slot is ok. seems like: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-wireless-networking-41/netgear-wg551-pcmciasocket0-cardbus-cards-are-not-supported.-470779/ possible, suggested solutions: http://forums.remote-exploit.org/livecd-support/6981-bt2-pcmcia-support-confused-2.html http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/cardbus-cards-not-supported-slack-10.2-440706/ but with pci=assign-busses,pci=biosirq,pci=routeirq,irqpoll as kernelparameters it don't work. With damnsmalllinux 4.4.10 (kernel 2.4.31) the card is nearly working (recognized, ndiswrapper-module can be loaded, iwlist wlan0 scan works, essid can not be set, perhaps because of a ndiswrapper version problem: "Warning: Driver for device wlan0 recommend version 18 of Wireless Extension, but has been compiled with version 16, therefore some driver features may not be available...") Therefore, I don't think, it is a hardware problem. A differnce is that damnsmalllinux uses cardmgr, debian not. Can I set up cardmgr on Debian Lenny somehow? Is it a kernel issue or is the package pcmciautils responsible for the message? Or is the kernel-version the problem, cause i read, that something changed from 2.6.13 on? Have cardbus cards been supported earlier/in former versions and now support stopped completely? Would installing Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.8 solve the probelm? If not here, where else could i ask for help? Thanks, Stefan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-laptop-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: Re: Suspend/Reboot issues on a Pavilion dv5 laptop
No Andrey. I don't see such a message. The laptop works normally in almost all cases except that it generates a weird sound at reboot. Even upgrading to Squeeze did not resolve that issue.
Re: Re: Re: Suspend/Reboot issues on a Pavilion dv5 laptop
I have tried all the three kernels. The one in Lenny, the one in Squeeze, and the one in Sid. No success although generally the newer the kernel, the better. I have read somewhere that under older kernels it was even worse than that. They say there was a sound coming from the speakers not only at reboot, but also at shutdown and hibernation. I wonder if I should report a bug but don't know where and how to describe it.
Re: Re: Re: Suspend/Reboot issues on a Pavilion dv5 laptop
Thank you so much Arthur for the useful link. I'm writting after such a long time! My solution to the dimming screen turned out to be an upgrade to Squeeze. It did not have pm-utils installed by default but after I installed it things went well. But unfortunately the sound is still coming from the audio speakers.
Re: Re: Suspend/Reboot issues on a Pavilion dv5 laptop
Klistvud, I don't understand why should I reset the BOIS to its defaul setting? I did upgrade the BOIS when I had Windows installed on the machine but I don't have Windows any more and such thing is almost definitely going to need Windows. The BOIS upgrade did not cause the problem as it was the issue before upgrading the BOIS as well. The problem is surely software-specific because it did not happen under Windows. Nima

Did you try these parameters separately, or all together? Try pnpbios=off, pci=noacpi instead. AFAIK, use of the pci=assign-busses workaround should not be necessary since Linux 2.6.18. > A differnce is that damnsmalllinux uses cardmgr, debian not. > Can I set up cardmgr on Debian Lenny somehow? cardmgr (part of pcmcia-cs) is deprecated and only usable with Linux 2.4 and earlier kernel versions. It was removed from Debian post-Etch. > Have cardbus cards been supported earlier/in former versions and now > support stopped completely? CardBus devices continue to be supported by the Linux kernel, subject to driver availability (which you intend to workaround using NDISwrapper). > Would installing Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.8 solve the probelm? I would not recommend this as Sarge is no longer supported. Hi Geoff, Original-Nachricht Von: Geoff Simmons An: Stefan Welte Datum: 22.01.2010 14:49 Thanks for the detailed answer. >> the cardbus/pcmcia-wlan-card (11ab:1faa) doesn't work on my laptop >> with debian lenny, 2.6.26-2-486: > > What laptop do you have? The laptop is labeled: HIGHSCREEN, LeBook Advance lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: OPTi Inc. 82C557 [Viper-M] (rev 14) 00:01.0 ISA bridge: OPTi Inc. 82C558 [Viper-M ISA+IDE] (rev 02) 00:06.0 VGA compatible controller: Chips and Technologies F65550 (rev c6) 00:07.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1130 (rev 04) 00:07.1 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1130 (rev 04) 00:14.0 IDE interface: OPTi Inc. 82C621 [Viper-M/N+] (rev 12) lspci -n 00:00.0 0600: 1045:c557 (rev 14) 00:01.0 0601: 1045:c558 (rev 02) 00:06.0 0300: 102c:00e0 (rev c6) 00:07.0 0607: 104c:ac12 (rev 04) 00:07.1 0607: 104c:ac12 (rev 04) 00:14.0 0101: 1045:c621 (rev 12) It seems, the laptop is basically a rock one, and model is mentor (cause of picture and some hardware data). But i'm not sure, if it is the 620; cause there are no hardware details for it. [2] It even could be the "Mentor"-only model [3], but the cardbus bridge is not matching exactly (TI1030 vs TI1130). > If this is correct, are you using BIOS version 1.38? [1] boot screen: systemsoft bios for opti viper 557/558n version 1.01.25 (3530-13) v2.4e 10/29/97 systemsoft plug-n-play bios ver 1.17.00 aida16 (only) told me "systembiosdate 12/23/1994", but unfortunately it did not show any bios version; the motherboard type is also unknown to aida16. :-( So i think, i don't use 1.38, perhaps 1.17? If you are familar with the mentor laptops, is there a difference in the bioses of the mentor series or is there one bios for all mentor laptops? >> dmesg shows: >> cs: pcmcia_socket0: cardbus cards are not supported. > [..] >> another card is working in the pcmcia-slots, so the slot is ok. > > Is your other card a 16-bit or 32-bit (CardBus) PCMCIA device? Yes, the card is 16 bit and works well. But it doesn't support 802.11g. >> possible, suggested solutions: > [snip] >> but with pci=assign-busses,pci=biosirq,pci=routeirq,irqpoll as >> kernelparameters it don't work. > > Did you try these parameters separately, or all together? I tried the pci= parameters separately and combined with the irqpoll parameter. > Try pnpbios=off, pci=noacpi instead. I tried (with "old" bios, version written above), but it did not solve the problem (cardbus cards not supported). I try to get latest bios [4] and then will flash it; afterwards i'll test with these parameters again. > CardBus devices continue to be supported by the Linux kernel, subject to > driver availability (which you intend to workaround using NDISwrapper). Yes, that's my intention. Which part of debian outputs the "cs: pcmcia_socket0: cardbus cards are not supported" information? Is it the kernel, a module or a debian-script,etc? Why does it output the information?
