Thank you so much Arthur for the useful link.  I'm writting after such a
long time!  My solution to the dimming screen turned out to be an upgrade to
Squeeze.  It did not have pm-utils installed by default but after I
installed it things went well.  But unfortunately the sound is still coming
from the audio speakers.
