I'm saying that forcing the removal of aoetools from etch because it doesn't
support mounting aoe devices at boot time won't get you any closer to your
goal; instead, it will prevent users from using this packages for
applications that don't involve early boot-time mounting of the devices.

Hence: the bug is a bug, but it is not release-critical.

Bug#388375: libselinux1-dev: pkgconfig file needs Libs.private: -lpthread

2006-09-20 Thread Daniel Schepler
Package: libselinux1-dev
Version: 1.30.27-3
Severity: serious

From my pbuilder build log of e2fsprogs:

...

/usr/lib/libselinux.a(setrans_client.o): In function

Looking at /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libselinux.pc, that file has no declaration of
the static library's need for -lpthread. I think that needs to go into
Libs.private, although I could be remembering wrong.

I don't know whether e2fsprogs actually uses pkgconfig, but if it doesn't
that's a separate bug to be filed (needs to either use pkgconfig or add
-lpthread manually).

Bug#388382: kdemultimedia-kio-plugins: wrong lame encoding option results in static-like files copying audio CD via konqueror

2006-09-20 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: kdemultimedia-kio-plugins
Version: 4:3.5.4-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

The default command line configuration, or any modification of it
accessible through kcontrol interface, will spawn lame with the -x
option.
This results in mp3 files containing almost white noise like sounds, at
least on this powerpc arch, with lame version 3.96.1.

Omitting this switch, the very same operation succeds. The option
however is not accessible to the user.

Suggested patch:
Omit the -x switch

Longer term solution:
Make the final command line accessible to the user, at least as an
editable entry in ~/.kde/share/config/kcmaudiocd_encoder_lame_rc.
Something like kaudiocreatorrc "commandLine" option would be much more
flexible.

This is not data loss; I assure you, ripping CDs is a non-destructive
operation. :)

mp3 support is also a secondary feature of kdemultimedia-kio-plugins; lame
isn't even included in Debian, the primary target of CD ripping with this
package is ogg vorbis files. So this bug is also not grave by the "unusable
or mostly so" metric, therefore I'm downgrading the report.

Bug#388256: tinysnmp-agent: SIGBUS on sparc at startup

The attached patch makes tinysnmpd survive a full snmpwalk on sparc. As I
said, I don't think this is the correct fix, since nothing in memmove(3)
indicates it can be relied on for copying non-aligned data. But at least
it shows some of the problematic points.

FWIW, this seems to work with -Os as well, so -O0 is no longer needed.

Cheers,

Bug#387247: Still can't install

2006-09-20 Thread Øyvind Harboe

Has a rebuild happened? The "libpisock8" wasn't there before. Is that
a new problem?

apt-get install evolution
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
evolution: Depends: libdbus-1-2 (>= 0.62) but it is not installable
Depends: libpisock8 but it is not installable

This happens after fmtutil calls

etex -ini -jobname=jadetex -progname=jadetex &latex jadetex.ini

This *looks* as if 'jadetex.ini' has been updated to the new form, while
the fmtutil.cnf snippets have not. Either because these are conffiles
and the local admins did not accept the change (not a bug), or because
the most recent jadetex upload missed that change (jadetex bug).

However, Frans and Sean, please answer these questions:

Then I can stop guessing ...

BTW, did anybody see the original bug report via the mailing list?

Below is the last part of the log from the upgrade.
Looks like the 40jadetex.cnf.dpkg-new is there because jadetex cannot jet
be configured and so the old version of the config file is still used.
Looking at the changes in that file, the cause could well be there.

Could it be that the problem is a similtaneous upgrade of jadetex and
tetex with jadetex still having an old-style config file? If that's the
case, will that not also be an issue for sarge->etch upgrades?

Bug#354622: Using Firefox as the app name without official branding is still a trademark violation

"security-oriented" enough.

What happens when MozCo drops support for Firefox 1.5 but Debian (or
another distro) is still obligated to provide support, as has happened
with Firefox 1.0 and Mozilla Suite 1.7 in sarge? I admit this question
is largely academic as it appears Debian will be forced to ship
mozilla/browser under a different name.

Other vendors (i.e. even Red Hat Enterprise Linux) have chosen to
upgrade, rather than backport, as that become progressively more
difficult and risky in the face of ongoing security-driven
rearchitecture. If there were no official releases on that branch, and
distros expressed interest in maintaining that branch, we would have to
figure out a reasonable path forward. That would likely be best handled
by continuing to check in with appropriate review to the affected
branch(es) and doing periodic tags so that multiple distros could
benefit. It is unlikely that a single distro would want to commit that
much effort on their own, of course, which is why people are upgrading
instead of continuing to maintain a branch. Red Hat, Sun and IBM kept
the Mozilla Suite 1.4 branch around like that for a couple years, but
realized it was less work to migrate customers.

Here, I had a 40jadetex.cnf.dpkg-new in /etc/texmf/fmt.d, that was not
yet renamed to 40jadetex.cnf because the new jadetex (3.13-7) had not
been configured. It could not be configured because it depends on
tetex-extra, which was not configured because tetex-base was not
configured.

running dpkg --force-depends --configure jadetex solved the problem for
me.

A vulnerability has been found in sage:

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Sage 1.3.6
allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via
JavaScript in a content:encoded element within an item element in an
RSS feed, as demonstrated by four example content:encoded elements
that use XMLHttpRequest to read arbitrary local files, aka "Cross
Context Scripting."

See e.g. http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/cross-context-scripting-with-sage for
details.

Please mention the CVE id in the changelog.

There is also an open bug against sage about arbitrary Javascript execution, but
I don't know whether this is the same issue:

Bug#354622: Using Firefox as the app name without official branding is still a trademark violation

2006-09-20 Thread Mike Connor

Steve Langasek wrote:

Are the Debian logos and trademarks free?

No, the Debian logos are not free. This is considered a bug.

Since there's no way of making the logo free without losing control over
the mark, why not adopt a generic branding switch like we did? Its
non-trivial to do, but it makes creating derivatives much easier. Its
pretty trivial, as you might discover, to rebrand the entire browser,
now that we've done that work, and really, any good fork/derivative
becomes a new app anyway, so this is a great thing to do. This gives
users absolute freedom to create new distros with their own
naming/artwork/etc, which isn't just freedom in theory, its lowering the
bar to exercising that freedom.

Understood, but it is important to consider legal implications when
mucking around with trademarks. At the least, file a bug in our
bugzilla (Marketing -> Trademark Permissions) if you want to try to get
an exception to how things are typically done. That said, when I asked
cbeard (who's in charge of product/branding issues), he explicitly said
no to this case.

Given your subsequent comments indicating that the Mozilla Foundation
reserves the right to revoke trademark grants for released versions of
Debian, I don't see that we have any choice but to discontinue our use of
the marks.

This is getting into theoretical games, of course, but if a released
version was found to be below an acceptable standard, we would be
required to take action to defend the mark, or risk losing our ability
to defend it. We are not going to give Debian carte blanche and deny
ourselves a possible recourse if something goes sour. That would only
make sense if there was little value in defending the mark.

For my part I think your trademark handling is unprecedented in Free
Software and really rather unreasonable, and it's certainly far removed from
the understanding that we had with Gervase previously, but it's your
trademark to manage as you wish and Debian will certainly take appropriate
steps to ensure we aren't infringing it

I think that's a bold and inaccurate statement. Red Hat is a prime
example of an open source company that aggressively protects its
trademarks. I certainly can't modify a Debian ISO image and distribute
that as Debian (nor should I be able to, lest the distro landscape
become even more confusing). The vast majority of apps don't have
trademarks at all, but those that do either defend and manage them, or
lose them.

I haven't made it through all of the endless mailing list flamewars from
when Gerv was tracking trademark issues, but ultimately it comes back to
treating everyone fairly, which hasn't been consistently true. That
means changes get vetted, branding usage is consistent, and we minimize
the difference between distributions (not just Linux, but examples like
the package Google distributes with their toolbar).

Bug#385980: Not a bug?

2006-09-20 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
Hello,

I looked at the result of the build-binary-clean cycle.

The files removed are automatically generated files.

I this raised the question on debian-qa and the opinion there seemed
to be that the "clean" target not be faulted for removing such files.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-qa/2006/09/msg3.html

So perhaps this bug is not a bug.

Kapil.

unfortunately, as i mentioned in my last mail i've purged the packages
in question :(

i can verify, however, that i did not (intentionally at least) make any
modifications to the latex/tetex/etc packages, and have always taken the
default choices from the debconf promtps. it seems someone else has
provided the information though, so hopefully that helps.

Hello,

To use a phrase from the the old adventure game.

The door closing time is approaching ...

As indicated by the maintainer the original submitters
have not indicated that the bug is reproduced with the
newer versions (post 0.8) of zeroconf.

The severity of this bug should be further lowered as it
does not seem to be affecting its newer users. (Like me!).

IMHO this bug is preventing "zeroconf" from getting further exposure
(and testing) which it would get if it gets into "testing" now.

Kapil.

Justification: user security hole

The following security issues were reported by Luigi Auriemma.

"""
Luigi Auriemma has reported some vulnerabilities in AlsaPlayer, which
potentially can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

1) A boundary error exists in the "reconnect()" function in reader/http/http.c
during the handling of HTTP connections. This can be exploited to cause a
stack-based buffer overflow when receiving a specially crafted "Location" HTTP
response header.

Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code, but requires
that the client connects to a malicious server.

2) A boundary error in the functions used for adding items to the playlist can
be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via e.g. an overly long URL.

Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code, but requires
that the GTK interface is used.

3) Two boundary errors exist in the "cddb_lookup()" function in
input/ccda/cdda_engine.c when performing a query to a CDDB server. This can be
exploited to cause stack-based buffer overflows when receiving a specially
crafted CDDB response.

Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code when querying a
malicious CDDB server.

The vulnerabilities have been reported in version 0.99.76. Other versions may
also be affected.

Bug#388026: libgnome-java - FTBFS: error: Package requirements (gtk2-java >= 2.8) were not met

2006-09-20 Thread Steve Langasek
tags 388026 patch
thanks

Since this is a regression introduced in an NMU, I'm skipping over the
waiting period and uploading a fix directly to incoming. The patch for this
is attached.

With this patch, the package is again no longer binNMU-safe. There are ways
to construct a binNMU-safe dep from an arch: all to an arch: any package,
but they're non-trivial and I think out of scope for this NMU.

Thanks,

Bug#388431: pam_limits.so incorrectly allows real-time scheduling to unprivileged users by default

2006-09-20 Thread Ville Hallik

Package: libpam-modules
Version: 0.79-3.2
Severity: critical

Module pam_limits.so blindly sets almost all available limits to
the unlimited value, including RLIMIT_NICE and RLIMIT_RTPRIO that should
be set to zero instead (this is also kernel's default). This gives all
users unlimited access to the real-time scheduling which can be used to
completely lock up the entire system. I discovered it accidentally when my
laptop locked up when I was experimenting with ecasound and alsa plugins.
This problem appeared right after upgrading from 0.79-3.1 to 0.79-3.2 but
source change is not to blame --- building with newer libc6-dev package
is likely the direct cause of this problem (because RLIMIT_NICE and
RLIMIT_RTPRIO were probably not available when previous version of
the libpam-modules were built). With libpam-modules_0.79-3.1 I have
(/etc/security/limits.conf is not modified):

$ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) 0
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
max nice(-e) 0
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
pending signals (-i) unlimited
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
open files (-n) 1024
pipe size(512 bytes, -p) 8
POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) unlimited
max rt priority (-r) 0
stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
max user processes (-u) unlimited
virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
file locks (-x) unlimited

But after upgrading to libpam_modules-0.79-3.2 and logging out and in I
get:

$ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) 0
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
max nice(-e) unlimited
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
pending signals (-i) unlimited

POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) unlimited

stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192

thanks

hi,

this is an bug in the database SQL script, see:

 http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13899&postcount=6

it does only occur if http://localhost/zabbix/ is used to access the
zabbix page, http://127.0.0.1/zabbix/ or some other ip/hostname will
still work. Fix is on the way.

bye,
- michael

Hi,

As Jeroen pointed out in #370436 a while ago, mozilla won't be removed from
the archive until a suitable replacement (i.e. seamonkey) is in etch with a
transition plan in place.

On that basis, this is just a quick ping to confirm that these bugs will not
be actioned until mozilla has actually been removed.

Regards,

Adam

findimagedupes will execute code stored in the names of the files.
This allows arbitrary code to be executed as the user by anyone who
can add files to a directory findimagedupes is run on; hence this is a
security hole and is grave.

An example:

create a file named `touch a`
run imagedupes
after imagedupes is done, there will be a file named a in the working

root, change the name of the original file to `mv /home/evil/file

Bug#388457: tomcat5 don't find the ejc.jar

2006-09-20 Thread Ruben Puettmann
Package: tomcat5.5

Version: 5.5.17-1

Severity: serious

Tags: unstable

hy,

i have running the package on etch system with some packages pining from
unstable. Java is installed:

ii sun-j2sdk1.51.5.0+update08 Java(TM) JDK, Standard
Edition, Sun Microsystems(TM)

created with make-jpkg

After installing via apt-get -t unstable tomcat5.5 the tomcat doesnt'
found the ecj.jar installed from ecj-boostrap. An tomcat5.5 package from
apache.org ( apache-tomcat-5.5.17.tar.gz) found it. So it seems that in
tomcat5.5 is /usr/share/java/ not in the lib path. After copy the file
to ./lib/tomcat5.5/shared/lib/ecj.jar all runs fine.

Bug#358575: Bug #358575: mailman deletes all ucf-managed files on purge

2006-09-20 Thread Lionel Elie Mamane
Just for complete clarity: Bug #358575 "mailman deletes all
ucf-managed files on purge" is present in version 2.1.5-8sarge3 _only_
for architecture i386. All other architectures (including source) have
the fix in 2.1.5-8sarge3. People running mailman on sarge on i386 are
recommended to recompile the package or install the future security
update 2.1.5-8sarge3.

To recompile the package:

sudo apt-get install build-essentials debhelper autoconf python-dev dpatch
 apt-get source mailman
 cd mailman-2.1.5
 debuild -uc -us -b
 cd ..
 sudo dpkg --install mailman_2.1.5-8sarge3_i386.deb

Hi Claudio,
i'm quite surprised by your bugreport.

Executing "ldd /usr/bin/mail-notification" shows no dynamic linking
against that librairy neither on i386 nor amd64.
Can you try this on your side?

-Pascal
PS: obviously, i'm unable to reproduce your problem neither on amd64
nor my i386 chroot.

Bug#385979: Symlink missing

2006-09-20 Thread Jan Larres

f-spot is looking for the library libgphoto2_port.so, but
libgphoto2-port0 (as of version 2.2.1-4) only provides
libgphoto2_port.so.0, so you have to create it:

ln -s /usr/lib/libgphoto2_port.so.0 /usr/lib/libgphoto2_port.so

Then it should work. So this is probably actually a bug in libgphoto2-port0.

You're lucky. I might be able to use X in Debian if it only crashed
once a week. As it is, I'm still dual-booting Ubuntu if I want to get
any work done.

I use icewm and gdm. As mentioned on the original bug report, it
randomly freezes even when I use a remote machine via XDMCP.
The local machine that's running the X server still freezes randomly.
I suppose the remote client could ask for things that freeze the
server, but isn't that still a server problem?

Bug#388163: [EMAIL PROTECTED], Diab Jerius <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

2006-09-20 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
clone 388163 -1
reassign -1 libc6-i386
retitle -1 libc6-i386: Missing /etc.ld.so.conf.d/i486-linux-gnu.conf
retitle 388163 ia32-libs: Obsolete /etc/ldconfig/* links
thanks

Hi,

since libc6-i386 ships the 32bit ld.so and libc6 I feel that it is its
responsibility to setup the ld.so.conf correctly for 32bit support. At
the same time the now obsolete links in ia32-libs can be removed. I
have cloned the bug and retitled it according to the part each package
has to fix.

MfG
Goswin

PS: The same is probably true for libc6-amd64 on i386.

Bug#388477: linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7-smp: NFS Server no response with smp kernel on AMD

2006-09-20 Thread Matthias Kreis
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7-smp
Version: 2.6.16-18
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

I use the following kernel linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7 on my workstation. My home
is on the server mounted
with nfs. Starting Mozilla Firefox works fine.

As soon as I use the linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7-smp kernel I get a problem with
nfs (Same setup as above).
As soon as I start Mozilla Firefox the programm freezes and I get messages
saying server nor responding.
One CPU on my Athlon 62 X2 goes in wait the other one is Idle.

Here is the lspci output. Maybe its a problem with the sky2 driver.

Bug#379480: Mouse and partial keyboard freeze

2006-09-20 Thread hendrik
Just used aptitude to upgrade etch to current versions of everything
(except python; some package depended on the old version).

Still using the 2.6.16 kernel, though.

The problem still exists, so I'll be back to Ubuntu for another while.

I ask again -- is there anything I can do here to help identify the
problem?

you should start by posting the error messages and an
vmstat 1 run when that happens.

but today 2.6.18 came out so better check if that one works for you,

Bug#388496: php4: cannot build package from source

2006-09-20 Thread Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
Package: php4
Version: 4:4.4.2-1.1
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

I'm trying to rebuild the php4 package however it is impossible
to satisfy the build requirements. The source package seems to
require apache-dev and apache2-prefork-dev yet apt does not allow
me to install both at the same time (If I install one the other
gets removed). Either it should be possible to install both
apache dev packages at the same time or php4 should only detect
on either one of them and only build the appropriate SAPI module.

Regards,
  Dennis

There is no need for such a file. ld.so natively looks on all
directories of bi (or tri)-arches directories. If you need to be
convinced just run: strings /sbin/ldconfig | grep "^/lib"

I use openbox. However, I don't think it's a client side problem, as
no grabs can prevent Ctrl-Alt-F1 and such to work. The freezes seem
random -- the last one I experienced (after ~week of flawless work)
occured after I opened a file with kate.

If you get freezes regularly, you could possibly debug it. However,
I'm not an X developper, so I can't give you advice on that.

I think that it is an internal server problem which doesn't depend
on whether the clients are local or remote. (The only difference I
can tell is that the remote cannot use the shared memory extension).

Could you try upgrading xserver-xorg-xxx to unstable version to see
whether the problem persists in later versions?

Jiri Palecek

I have reviewed Arjan's package, I consider it well done,
and I'm going to upload it.

Since gnome-pilot was uploaded to 3-day delayed queue, and
gnome-pilot-conduits needs gnome-pilot in order to build, I'm going to
upload the new conduits version to 4-day delayed queue.

Bug#387610: Null pointer

2006-09-20 Thread Peter Samuelson

[Eugen Dedu]
> I do not know if this helps, but in the log you have attached there
> is a null pointer error...:

Indeed, but it's in the Java section. We've pretty much been ignoring
the Java testsuite ever since we added it to the build, because free
JVMs have _never_ been able to complete it successfully. I only added
it in the hopes that someday kaffe (and later, gcj) would manage to
pass the whole thing, at which point I'll change debian/rules to no
longer ignore failure.

The real ia64 build error is further down:

  Running all tests in authz_tests.py...success
  Running all tests in changes-test...success
  Running all tests in fs-base-test...FAILURE

Reading the failure log which is printed at the end of the tests:

svn_tests: Berkeley DB error for filesystem 'test-repo-open-berkeley' while
opening environment:
  svn_tests: Invalid argument
svn_tests: bdb: DB_REGISTER limits each process to a single open DB_ENV handle
FAIL: lt-fs-base-test 2: open an existing Berkeley DB filesystem

Now, you might say, "oh, that's a perfectly clear error message." And
it is. What is _not_ clear is why this happens only on ia64.

Thanks,
Peter

Fair enough.

The maintainer seems to be non-responsive at this time, and I would like to
make sure that this stuff ends up in etch. Is there anything I can do to
expedite the process?

Bug#388115: tetex-base: postinst fails, can not upgrade

2006-09-20 Thread Norbert Preining
Hi all!

I cannot actually check something since I am in Georgia and far away from any
of my computers, kut I have some questions/comments:

 . Original Message ...
On Wed, 20 Sep 2006 12:07:33 +0200 "Frans Pop" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
>Looks like the 40jadetex.cnf.dpkg-new is there because jadetex cannot jet

Yes, this is true, it seems to be like this. BUT: Why is the snippet at all
included in the fmtutil.cnf file??? The new update-* code ??? added (who was
it?) should make sure that the snippets with a .dpkg-new file are *not*
included.

So could it be that tetex-* doesnt call update-fmtutil at the beginning of the
postinst script? this would explain why this happened, at least this is my
semi-qualified opinion from the crystal-ball ...

Bye bye, I am back on Monday for checking stuff.

Ahh yes Ralf: I assume that the original bug report did go to the maintainer.
What I dont understand is why the NMU is numbered -7?

Best wishes

Norbert

Bug#388505: gcj-dbtool-4.1 call in postinst segfaults on fresh installs on arm, hppa

2006-09-20 Thread Joey Hess
Package: gij-4.1
Version: 4.1.1-13
Severity: grave

sh-3.1# gcj-dbtool-4.1 -n /var/lib/gcj-4.1/classmap.db
Segmentation fault

This happens on arm, and, according to vorlon, hppa. The postinst runs this
if /var/lib/gcj-4.1/classmap.db doesn't exist.

This is breaking various builds, like xulrunner on arm, and is contributing
to arm not being a very good release candidate architecture, this the
severity.

Here's a backtrace:

It is (probably) not included. The problem is that the .dpkg-new one is
te correct one in this case.

Swami for example uses fluidsynth as its synthesizer engine and works
perfectly without external sound banks.

We definitely disagree on this matter. Feel free to raise the question
to the Technical Committee and I'll follow their recommendation
whatever it might be.
