2007-03-21 Thread mj
Package: myspell-el-gr
Version: 0.3-1

Accent marks are completely ignored in capitals and those words are marked
incorrect.

This is a replacement dictionary that appends capital letters:

It is the file included in the pack + capital greek words appended from
a GPL dictionary by "Dimitris Giannitsaros <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>".

Regardless of what you think about the other points, requiring
non-defence of your own patents seems not to follow DFSG 9. Although
I condemn software patents, I know they do exist in some places.

I suspect it really is "many" and not just debian-legal contributors.
Do you really want to argue that software under licences which try to
affect other pieces of unrelated software meets the DFSG?

Bug#338077: sword-text-kjv - King James Version and Royal Letters Patent

2005-11-10 Thread MJ Ray
debian-legal has reviewed this topic before. You can read it in
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2002/05/msg00108.html
Some of the links there have rotted, but it seemed clearly not
Crown copyright.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_James_Version_of_the_Bible
Wikipedia asserts that the KJV is still copyrighted in England.
I think Wikipedia is incomplete at best. Yet again, it does not
seem possible to verify a Wikipedia assertion from evidence
cited in its article. The discussion link on the article
expresses doubt and many of the people discussing it use
"letters patent/copyright" which seems confused to me.

It is my present understanding that the royal letters patent
control printing, not copyright, which did not exist here when
this started. This "orthogonality" or "independence" is
mentioned in articles, including some you can find online like
http://www.lexum.umontreal.ca/conf/dac/en/sterling/sterling.html
Crown Copyright in the United Kingdom..., by J.A.L. Sterling.

Lionel Elie Mamane cited the 1998 Copyright Act, which surprised
me because I've not heard of it. Which country is it for?

I haven't yet found anything credibly showing extension of the
prerogative to electronic distribution, or more generally to
become a Crown copyright. I don't think we generally grant
the monarchy new prerogatives these days and "The Crown cannot
invent new prerogative powers" (2002-03 Public Admin. Select
Comm. Press Notice 19).

The act currently in force in England is the Copyright Designs
and Patents Act 1988 as amended. If the KJV were covered by
Crown Copyright, wouldn't that have expired after 125 years? I
think the letters patent and royal prerogative are the problem.

So, it's not a problem to *distribute* the KJV in England, as
far as I can see, but it seems you're not free to print it here.
The same may be true of some other Commonwealth countries,
as listed in s.3 and notes of Sterling above.

Hope that helps,

Trying to prove that any unseen letters patent do not apply is
rather difficult, isn't it? We don't know the current letters
patent (if any) to know for sure whether we can do anything.

I would be very surprised by such an interpretation. In recent
copyright-related cases I've read (like the Sony anti-hacking),
the courts seem very intolerant of attempts to stretch words.

Apologies. I did not mean to suggest the words were quoted from that
article. I wrote and emphasised them before looking for references.
/orthogonality/ or /independence/ may have been better.

I've seen no credible evidence of perpetual Crown Copyright (CC)
covering this package. That's not surprising because CC wasn't
mentioned in early copyright law. The 1911 Act created a CC with
a term of 50 years, later extended up to 125 years by the 1988.

The above does not affect royal prerogatives, as it says.

Bluntly, I think some of the authors of that Wikipedia article
would struggle to tell copyright from a hole in the floor. This
bug should probably be tagged moreinfo until more reliable data
appears, regardless of other actions.

This may be another case where non-XX (a way for mirror
operators to block locally-uncertain content) would be good.

That article is known to contain basic errors. See, for example,
http://azure.humbug.org.au/~aj/blog/2005/09/09
indolence log, by Anthony Towns
or the comments from the article, even.

> Actually, "Debian takes security very seriously." is just a questionable

That's a bit low.

Please explain how you know that the statistic is "that wrong".

I think the statistic is questionable, so there should be
verification/substantiation of the statistic, but I don't know
whether it's right or wrong. I think it's prejudging things to
delete the first paragraph as suggested.

Bug#313615: Further information on the GPL for an Apache module

2005-06-15 Thread MJ Ray
I think the section in the GPL FAQ at
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLPluginsInNF
applies, even though Apache is not non-free.

libapache-mod-chroot, libapache-mod-witch, libapache2-mod-fcgid,
libapache2-mod-ldap-userdir, libapache2-mod-xslt are also GPL.
If this is a bug, it looks like those may have similar bugs.

A common solution seems to be to get permission to link to
an APL'd work as an exception. Upstream looks alive. If
they're willing, it may be the simplest fix.

libapache2-mod-ldap-userdir has an exception for OpenSSL already.

Good luck!

Bug#310645: drscheme - dependency on mzscheme version

2005-05-27 Thread MJ Ray
drscheme and mzscheme are built from the same source and
drscheme really needs the same version of mzscheme running
underneath it. I suspect it needs the same version present
for the installation and byte-compiling and so on, but I've
not looked closely at this package for a while. Does that
answer your question about what it's trying to achieve?

Going back further, I think there we had "overlapping"
packages at one point, which is why there was the Provide
and Replaces thing going on. The upstream source used to
make it easy to build mzscheme or drscheme-including-mz
but not drscheme-to-run-on-already-installed-mz.

What's the status of this bug? I can't see surviving problems,
but I don't have an system to test this upgrade on (yet).

I'm not sure how debian should react to this. I'll send this to

You write "99% of the NZ Internet", but the bug report says
"ftp.nz.debian.org is no longer accessible to the majority of

Three questions:
1. Do you have a dcc user and a dcc group, shown by "id dcc"?
2. What version of start-stop-daemon and are other things non-root OK?

Bug#307130: dccifd already runs as dcc

2005-05-06 Thread MJ Ray
Thanks for the answers. I'm confused and can't see the reason for
this. Unless zobel takes it up or you can make the same happen on
another system, I'll mark it unreproducible and call for help.

Last try:
start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --chuid dcc:dcc --exec /usr/bin/whoami
replies with dcc OK for you?

Bug#307672: Can't purge dcc-common if LDAP is used

Reading policy 9.2.2, it says to use adduser, so probably deluser
and delgroup are the equivalent, instead of groupdel.

Does delgroup work for you?

Did adduser manage to add the dcc user and group for you?
Should your nsswitch.conf include files as a fallback?
Should we make this a wishlist bug against adduser?

That seems ugly to me, definitely the redirection, but maybe it's
the best solution.

package dcc-common
tags 307672 + patch
stop commands here

> > Did adduser manage to add the dcc user and group for you?
> adduser doesn't add the user if is already exists.

That doesn't answer the question. The postrm script won't
try to remove the users if they are already removed, so you
should remove the dcc user and group from LDAP *before* doing
the --purge and there would be no error.

Did adduser add the dcc user and group for you, or did you add it yourself?

I think that dcc should warn it couldn't remove the user and
group if the adduser commands can't, but not fail. I'm mildly
concerned that usermod is used instead of moduser in postinst.
I also think your system is misconfigured (but that doesn't
excuse dcc-common failing to remove) and you should add files
back into nsswitch if you want debian packages to install and
purge without sysadmin intervention.

Here's a udiff. Excuse timestamps:

Bug#281351: Update/Questions on swxtotext

2005-03-29 Thread MJ Ray
I am not sure why mako claims I do not want to upload this.
I just do not have time to prepare the packaging in the near
future, nor the need. I am happy to review and sponsor uploads
if wanted. I think not packaging it myself is also a good
habit which helps avoid DDs from flooding debian with their
own unrequested software.

As you might expect, I disagree that a perl script is as robust
and flexible as the simple shell script approach, although
it does have other features. I don't need those features yet,
as few people email OO writer files around (mostly uncorrected
former MS Word file emailers who changed to OpenOffice) and
I've only ever once been sent an unsolicited OO spreadsheet.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that

The gender of the AM is not determined, so "his" is incorrect,
but I think we're sure in this example that there's only one, so
the plural/indefinite "their" is totally incorrect and makes the
phrase unclear. It should be reworded, possibly as "Application
Manager will send approval to the DAM," unless or until AM
genders are noted.

However, this bug was introduced by people who want political
correctness before good, clear English. When I pointed out
these problems beforehand and suggested rephrasing and equality
of examples before, half-read wikipedia articles and anecdotes
from the advocates were cited in opposition. I don't think I
can reason with that level of bigotry.

I expect your bug will be closed unfixed soon. Sorry.

What copyright licence are the graphics under? It looks like they may

I think it could be included in main with alternative 'clean room'

Since the end of non-US http://www.debian.org/mirror/list-non-US
I don't think there is another category instead of main. main is
debian and debian is main.

The mirrors also have non-free (stuff that can be redistributed but
does not follow the DFSG) and contrib (stuff that could go in main if
it didn't depend on something not in main), but they are not part of
debian. Also:
- IF smc's graphics infringe Nintendo's copyright THEN we probably
cannot legally distribute them at all, even in non-free.
- Therefore, IF smc's graphics cannot be changed THEN we probably
  cannot distribute smc.

Sorry about the conditionals. I don't know Nintendo's work well
enough to have a strong opinion whether or not smc's graphics infringe
Nintendo's copyright.

Hope that explains,

Why is debian distributing libgnomemm under the GPL?

ACK. I jumped version somewhere. Probably its upstream is not averse
to relicensing or giving extra permissions, as 1.3 onwards is LGPL, but
this is a bug for either/both of gabber or libgnomemm1.2 to fix.

Bug#297648: RSS feed for DWN - 1.0 and internal

2005-03-02 Thread MJ Ray
An RSS feed should be the community-developed RDF Site Summary
(aka RSS 1) rather than the semi-XML Rich Site Summary (RSS 2).

Either way, it would be better to link stories to id tags on
their story paragraphs. Some RSS tools really dislike repeated
URLs in s, which I think the attached patch generates.

Please, ask Finland's *legislators* if the situation there is really
that anti-competitive closed shop. I've heard similar things before, but
as I'm not much of a musician and negiotiated a cancellation on my book
publishing contract, I've not had to look at these problems for myself.

I suspect it is that bad (the EU approach to copyright is a wrong-headed
protectionist one at present), but anyway it would be good to make
legislators aware that there are creative people who are hindered by this.

Monopoly collecting societies seem long overdue a reality check and
a reminder that they should work for the composers/authors and not only
the legacy publishers.

If Teosto has a fundamental objection to releasing music as free software
and Teosto approval is an essential requirement, then we either change
Teosto or we change free software. I say change Teosto.

That zip does not contain that file:

Archive: 1rott13.zip
  Length Date TimeName

   142412 08-01-95 13:30 INSTALL.EXE

In general, I can't see how the terms of 1rott13.zip can affect whether
or not the GPL'd rott downloads it automatically. It's up to the FTP
site owner to ban people if they object to downloading, IMO. What
people do after downloading is not our concern.

If appropriate, please send the text of VENDOR.DOC to debian-legal again
with the question.

I think not, but I suspect it depends on your country.

German advertisers and distributors should already be aware of this
question. See bug #313159

Personally, I do not understand how that German Index is a workable law,
but I'm not selling or advertising such materials to young Germans.

Bug#418328: "different to" is fine grammar

2007-04-11 Thread MJ Ray
"different to" is perfectly good English English. This is noted in
http://alt-usage-english.org/excerpts/fxdiffer.html
while the pages
http://www.jimloy.com/language/differen.htm
http://englishplus.com/grammar/0202.htm
are about "different than" and irrelevant to this report.

The bug report looks like a form letter. See
http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3749
for example.

http://www.collins.co.uk/wordexchange/Sections/DicSrchRsult.aspx?word=different
explains the different different-following prepositions in more detail.

Anyway, "The .la contains a libdir which is not its path."
may be a clearer phrasing of the same message.

Hope that helps,

I think I agree with that. It's not subject to the firefox copyright,
as far as I know, and it's an honest use of the trademark. If the icon
is modified to refer to something else, then any bug may be caused by
the trademark, rather than the icon's copyright licence terminating,
which is the most common trademark/licensing bug.

Thanks for tackling this,

This is a bug. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=678540

This really does lock many disabled users out of the wiki - and with
some browser settings, it even insults them too. So bugs asking for
wiki changes should not be closed with "you can just register an
account and fix it yourself" because many users cannot.

Hope that informs,

Bug#690853: evolution: Setup requires username and password entered repeatedly

2012-10-18 Thread MJ Ray
Package: evolution
Version: 2.30.3-5
Severity: normal

Even if access to many services on a server uses one username and
password, evolution still needs the details entering 5 or more times.

Each user has imap, smtp, cal, shared caldav calendars, and so on.
Each of these has to be set up manually one at a time, which is a
pain.

Is there a solution to this, such as setting up the accounts via some
other method such as a distributable config file, or an authentication
wizard where one authentication tries to set up all the services?

This might be an upstream problem, or might be solved upstream, but I
didn't find it when I tried looking.

Thanks. I hadn't noticed getUrlFd because my trigger for the error
was the RSS module, which I think doesn't use getUrlFd but passes
the URL as-is to feedparser, which copes with it.

Is Limnoria in debian?

It's debatably correct: "important: a bug which has a major effect on
the usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable

Being unable to recover a password has a major effect on the usability
for the reporter, so why the surprise?

I suspect it didn't appear there because the name isn't
distinctive and varies a bit (see below).

It looks like it's only appropriate if used by IBM (due to the
definition of Contributor), so it should probably should have a
comment along those lines next to it. So should PHP License IIRC, so
this doesn't bar it from listing.

It looks like there are two versions:

1. IBM PUBLIC LICENSE VERSION 1.0 - SECURE MAILER
ftp://ftp.porcupine.org/mirrors/postfix-release/LICENSE

2. IBM Public License Version 1.0
http://www.openafs.org/frameset/dl/license10.html

Are they the same except the title and which should we link?

Bug#388141: Handling the copyright mess of the website

That seems a bad situation in two ways: 1. even though I think SPI is
A Good Thing, I will not assign copyright to it because I feel that
would make it more attractive to attackers. SPI already holds too
many assets for too long, in my opinion.

2. I feel that forcing a choice between copyright assignment and being
airbrushed out of the website is rather at odds with the usual idea of
voluntary contributions to the project. It seems like demanding a fee
before work is considered on its merits for inclusion.

Nevertheless, I probably would grant DPLs (or suitable delegates)
permission to pick a dual licence for material on the website if
asked, so long as the previous licence(s) also held.

Hope that informs,

Here is a little more info. I think that I have encountered a similar
problem and in my case, I believe it was because I had got in a muddle

does seem to be a backup-time error that is not obvious until you try

Bug#637622: config file modifiable by users in /var/lib/dtc

2012-06-14 Thread MJ Ray
I think this is rather debatable. Perhaps some of the config files
could be replaced by things like apache2/conf.d sections that
calculated things from the dtc database but it wouldn't be as simple
to debug.

However, I think there is one file which is troublesome here. I think
most users should modify /var/lib/dtc/etc/quotawarnmsg to add some
customisation (like the name of the server owner maybe) that makes it
easier to distinguish a real warning from a phishing attack. When
/var/lib/dtc/etc/quotawarnmsg is emailed, it does not use the header
or signature from /etc/dtc/ so it is rather for users to dismiss or
attackers to spoof.

Could that one be moved to /etc/dtc, please?

2014-08-08 Thread MJ Ray
Package: iceowl-extension
Version: 24.7.0-1~deb7u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I was creating an event in the calendar and adding remote (not on my caldav
server) attendees.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

The "Notify attendees" checkbox was ticked but greyed out. I understood this to
mean that attendees would be notified and I could not stop it, but they were
not.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Watching the email logs of both caldav server and client machines showed that
neither sent an email to the remote attendee.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I expected the client to send an email, as it does for local calendars.
Ideally, I would like the "Notify attendees" checkbox to be toggle-able.

I think so here. It's used as a name.

I think both "allows accessing to data" and "allows accessing data"
are slightly wrong. It should be of the form "allows FEATURE" and
FEATURE is "access to data" here. However, this seems moot now.

I'm not sure whether it's standard, so I've written "a" not "the".

Evolution-python allows programs using Python to interface with the
Evolution Data Server, which is a GNOME store of address book,
calendar and task list information.

Notes:
- Dictionaries seem inconsistent about to-do, so I replaced it.
- Not sure about "python programs" and "programs in Python" seems too
narrow. If it's like guile, then programs which use Python but aren't
entirely written in Python can still access it.
- I hate "backend" and it was ridiculed on the BBC last week.

I was not part of that discussion. What subject was that under?

I found a small mention of it in Bug #426491 and some discussion in
ocsinventory-agent's 2007-04-* thread, but nothing about a supposed
official English typography. I'm *very* suspicious of things claiming
official English status - we don't have an Academie Anglaise and that
tactic seems similar to Death By Dictionary. Standards by different
people simply do different things about quotation marks (compare
Fowler, Strunk, Columbia, Wired), as do various historic publications
(compare Shakespeare with the Bible).

FWIW, I have a fairly stong preference for ""s instead of ''s when
there's no computing or nesting reason not to.

I think I remember having complaints about early email-submitted copy
to both How-To books and GNU/Linux User and Developer when I used
double-spaces. I still type them instinctively (I learned on
typewriter-style word processors), but it seemed not to be the done
thing for computer-based text.

Myself, I'd not take a strong line either way after full stops.

Bug#428195: krb5: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates review

2007-06-10 Thread MJ Ray
I don't trust Wikipedia and I'm a bit sceptical of US reference claims
on English use elsewhere.

Finally (from me at least), I found a copy of Fowler's 1908 King's
English online with http://www.bartleby.com/116/406.html#2

There are single and double quotation marks, and, apart from minor
peculiarities, two ways of utilizing the variety. The prevailing
one is to use double marks for most purposes, and single ones for
quotations within quotations, [...] The more logical method is
that adopted, for instance, by the Oxford University Press, of
reserving the double marks exclusively for quotations within
quotations. [...]

So, leaving aside my dislike for the Oxford institutions'
(mis)handling of English ("more logical" indeed!), it seems that
single-v-double quotes has been open for at least a century now.

My opinion: each to their own.

I hope that the scores are available, or a track-by-track recording,
to avoid any build-depends on Sony ACID Pro 5 in a really clear way.

However, for debian compilation of the game, isn't the preferred source
form the mixed recording? The one used in the build?
