Bug#369317: What news?

Upstream is (slowly) working on a maintainer release. I am adopting
nedit and have a beta of the new upstream release present for review on
mentors.debian.net. I will look into the open bugs and see how things
go. I am picking up. A lot of the nedit bugs are related to lesstif2
which had some lack of attention. I am also looking into that package to
help the maintainer.

Though I understand the reasoning, this does not change the truth: the
über-old version in Lenny can break things. This may cause user frustration
or even liability issues.

To be honest, I don't really care about MySQL 5.0, I plan to move 5.1 to
unstable, and drop 5.0 from Debian.

Bug#515567: gnome-system-monitor: X error if I try to change the priority of a process

2009-02-16 Thread Patrick May
Package: gnome-system-monitor
Version: 2.22.3-1
Severity: normal

Gnome's system monitor program crashed immediately if you try to set the
priority of a process below 0 (that is, giving it a higher priority).
It doesn't matter whose process it is - the result is always the same.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Start GNOME system monitor
2. Click on the "Processes" tab
3. Right click on a process, and choose "Change priority...".
4. In the "Change Priority" window, change the "nice value" to anything below 0.
For example, -3.
5. Click the "Change Priority" button.
6. The program crashes, and prints this message on the console.

The program 'gnome-system-monitor' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 39864 error_code 8 request_code 1 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Heh heh! Oh, boy! Oh, man! I tested this on my laptop and my main computer, it
happened on both. Oh boy!

Just wanted to let you know.

As far as I know, gnome-specimen does not provide the possibility to
open a font file - it just allows previewing installed fonts.

It seems that gnome-font-viewer was added again as I can see it in VCS
in trunk.

Would be good to include again it in Debian as well if possible.

Cheers,

Uh? Since when is Unrealircd dead upstream? I wouldn't call a release
less then a month ago "dead upstream", regardless of what can be
said about unrealircd otherwise.

Bug#486888: Temporary solution

2009-02-16 Thread NoGarD
Here is a temporary solution that works for me... till I manage to
switch to apache2:

apt-get install php5-common
This will also install apache2.. but will not start if apache1 is
running and use port 80

wget
http://security.debian.org/debian-security/pool/updates/main/p/php5/libapache-mod-php5_5.2.0-10+lenny1_i386.deb
dpkg -i --force-depends libapache-mod-php5_5.2.0-10+lenny1_i386.deb

In /etc/apache/modules.conf make sure there is a line:
LoadModule php5_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp5.so

apachectl restart

After that apt-get will complain all the time for unmet dependencies!
One solution is
to manualy install all files from the package, the other is to transit
to apache2 and
after you are done to completly remove apache1:)

Bug#515566: selinux-policy-default: selinux policy violation "Unknown" fo rs2ram (hald_t)

2009-02-16 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: selinux-policy-default
Version: 2:0.0.20080702-14
Severity: important
Tags: selinux

This basically makes SELinux unusable on laptops.
Many of the selinux issues that I'm seeing are related to hald.
Probably, if we fix the hal policy, half of the problems should vanish.

Summary:

SELinux is preventing s2ram (hald_t) "execute" to /dev/mem
(memory_device_t).

Detailed Description:

[SELinux is in permissive mode, the operation would have been denied but
was
permitted due to permissive mode.]

SELinux denied access requested by s2ram. It is not expected that this
access is
required by s2ram and this access may signal an intrusion attempt. It is
also
possible that the specific version or configuration of the application
is
causing it to require additional access.

Allowing Access:

Sometimes labeling problems can cause SELinux denials. You could try to
restore
the default system file context for /dev/mem,

restorecon -v '/dev/mem'

If this does not work, there is currently no automatic way to allow this
access.
Instead, you can generate a local policy module to allow this access -
see FAQ
(http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc5/#id2961385) Or you can
disable
SELinux protection altogether. Disabling SELinux protection is not
recommended.
Please file a bug report
(http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi)
against this package.

I tend to disagree. I hardly ever install recommended packages and never
see anything break. Missing functionalities are OK, but not breakage.
I'm not really against putting xfce4-utils in the "Recommends" field,
but it shouldn't break anything. If it breaks anything, then the package
should depend on it.

If you really want to put it as a recommended package rather than a
dependency, I advise removing the bogus menu entries.

I can add .swo but I don't think it's safe/interesting to ignore .sw[a-p].
Is that enough for you?

Flash file are .swf for examples and it would be annoying to lose them
because we were too generous in the default ignore list.

I also should implement some way for the source package to override the
default ignore list, probably with a debian/source/ignore_default file or
something like that.

yes, thanks.

I'm not sure if your card has a G80 board, but you might want to look at
http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 to see how to setup dualhead
nowadays.

If you're card is not supported by xrandr, I think there are other ways for
nv, but right now I dont know which ;-)

As alternative, I propose not to use the suffix .sh:
- now we change /will be sourced/could be sourced/ , with a footnote that

- we bugs package, to remove the suffix .sh
- after most of the most important packages removed the .sh suffix,

hmm. All init.d script should be executable, with proper #! header.
Sysadmin are used to manually /etc/init.d/foo >stop|start|restart|reload>

Bug#495120: why it isn't fixed yet

2009-02-16 Thread Nicolas Gorguès

I have to second this, Janos...

I'm using Debian chroots on Synology boxes. These tend to become very
common, and the lastest one (DS-209+) comes with a e500v2 PowerPC
processor. Some previous and widely used models were based on e500v1
(DS-107).

Being unable to apt-get (or aptitude) anything with lenny, I'm stuck
with etch... which has just been obsoleted, while the buggy release
became "stable"...

I tried to rebuild libstdc++.so.6.0.10 with a chrooted Gentoo (emerging
gcc-4.3.2-r3), without any change regarding the "illegal instruction"
error... It seems I wasn't able to guess the special compilation option
that would have done the magic...

Any help - compilation instructions, patched library, dirty workaround
to make package management work in lenny, anything... - regarding this
issue would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Nicolas.

Bug#515569: icedove: message body not displayed

2009-02-16 Thread Marcus Better
Package: icedove
Version: 2.0.0.19-1
Severity: normal

Icedove occasionally stops displaying message bodies. When this
happens, the content pane is just blank, for all messages in all
folders in all of my accounts (all three are IMAP).

Message lists are still shown and updated, for both new and old
messages, and the headers for the selected message are displayed as
usual, but the content is just blank.

Pressing "Reply" brings up a composer with the quoted message text
(that was previously invisible), so the message is being downloaded,
it's just not shown.

The only workaround I know of is to restart icedove.

While I agree in general that the .sh suffix should not be mentionned
unless it has a specific meaning, I am afraid that your proposal will
be technically troublesome, because the file /etc/init.d/*.sh are
conffiles and renaming conffiles is a pain. Since such files are
critical at startup, I am afraid than an attempt to rename them will make
the upgrade path to squeeze more fragile.

I think Russ point is that there is no reason for policy to mandate to
run them with 'sh /etc/init.d/foo' if you can just run them directly as
'/etc/init.d/foo', as you suggest.

If we are going to remove """Also, if the script name ends in .sh, the
script will be sourced in runlevel S rather than being run in a forked
subprocess""", then we can just remove any difference in handling
a script called /etc/init.d/foo.sh versus /etc/init.d/bar.

Cheers,

Package: wnpp

I intend to orphan the exmap package since it's in a bad shape and I
don't have enough time to take care of it.

The package description is:
Exmap is a memory analysis tool which allows you to accurately determine how
much physical memory and swap is used by individual processes and shared
libraries on a running system. In particular, it accounts for the sharing of
memory and swap between different processes.

Well, that's the point since the beginning. What's a “missing

ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts:

This sounds like it is no longer needed by d-i:

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/GUIFonts

debian-boot folks, can you confirm that?

Can you provide contacts for people interested in Georgian who might
like to join the Debian fonts team and adopt this package?

Or would people interested in Georgian suggest removal of
ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts from Debian?

ttf-arphic-*

These don't appear to be used by the installer. Subscribers of the
debian-chinese-* lists, could you give any information about if these
fonts are still useful?

They need a new maintainer, would any of you like to join the Debian
fonts team and adopt these packages?

Or should we remove these fonts from Debian?

Bug#515262: POSIX at(1) referring to touch(1) which has one second resolution is odd

2009-02-16 Thread Andrew Buckeridge
Package: at
Version: 3.1.10
Severity: whishlist

Having one second resolution for touch(1) makes sense as file system
time stamps must support this. See also utime(3), utime.h(7), stat(3)
and stat.h(7) POSIX man pages. With at(1), however we only want minute
resolution.

I.e. it is really just at -t [[CC]YY]MMDDhhmm we want for non confusing
dates.

We could ignore [.SS], require it be ".00" if used or use it even
though not significant in terms of our time resolution which will mean
that it is effectively ignored anyway.

Ignoring the [.SS] would seem most POSIX compatible.

Bug#515574: courier-imap: Would be nice to remove the conflict: imap-server

2009-02-16 Thread Emmanuel Lacour
Package: courier-imap
Version: 4.4.0-2
Severity: wishlist

Currently, courier-imap has a "Conflict: imap-server" in control file. I didn't
found information on the reason for this in the debian changelog. I checked
with dovecot for example and I can't see any reason other than port conflict.
Port conflict can be fixed the way apache does it for example (don't start the
service if a program is already listen on imap port). That will ease miration
from one imap server to courier-imap or in some complex case allow running
different imap server on the same computer with different ports.

Doesn't the same hold for RSA-MD5 signatures? I'm not sure industry
consensus is a good measure here. What we are relying on here is this
part of RFC 5280:

  (k) If certificate i is a version 3 certificate, verify that the
basicConstraints extension is present and that cA is set to
TRUE. (If certificate i is a version 1 or version 2
certificate, then the application MUST either verify that
certificate i is a CA certificate through out-of-band means
or reject the certificate. Conforming implementations may
choose to reject all version 1 and version 2 intermediate
   certificates.)

GnuTLS doesn't have any API to provide this out-of-band information, so
we simply reject version 1 certificates (unless a flag is set).

Hm. It is interesting that it says 'intermediate certificates' in the
last sentence. I think this is mistaken, the part of the algorithm
applies to root certificates as well as end-entity certificates too.

> Furthermore, arguments based on the age of those certificates and the

Bug#515576: /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid does not work

2009-02-16 Thread Guido Trotter

Package: squid
Version: 2.7.STABLE3-4.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

/etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid by default calls:

invoke-rc.d squid reload || true

This does not work because no path is set when this is called by
resolvconf, and thus it prints an error:
/etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid: line 4: invoke-rc.d: command not
found

Furthermode even invoking invoke-rc.d with its full path
(/usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d) breaks:
/usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d: line 334: xargs: command not found
/usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d: line 335: xargs: command not found
/usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d: line 336: xargs: command not found

A possible solution would be to export a sensible PATH and then call
invoke-rc.d. Alternatively invoke-rc.d could be fixed to support being
called without a PATH

Thanks,

Guido

Bug#515577: metacity: New windows appear underneath older windows when a window is given "always on top" status

2009-02-16 Thread Patrick May
Package: metacity
Version: 1:2.22.0-2
Severity: important

When you give a window "always on top" status, newly opened windows will appear
behind the window which is currently focused.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open some windows, for example, some Xterms.
2. Focus one of the windows.
3. Press Alt+F2 to invoke the Run Application prompt window
RESULT: The Run Application prompt window appears behind the currently focused
window.
(This also happens in other situations, not just with the Run Application
windows.)

This bug really gets on my nerves, enough to make me want to look for an
alternative window manager. That's why I gave it "important" status.

The manpage has this:

   --strip, --strip-components N

Is your user space 64 bit or 32? Do you have some uncommon setup? Are you
allowed to access /dev/vboxdrv? Is your user in group vboxusers?

Bug#515574: courier-imap: Would be nice to remove the conflict: imap-server

2009-02-16 Thread Stefan Hornburg (Racke)

Emmanuel Lacour wrote:

Package: courier-imap

Currently, courier-imap has a "Conflict: imap-server" in control file. I didn't
found information on the reason for this in the debian changelog.

Yeah, it was introduced before the first official release :-).

I checked
with dovecot for example and I can't see any reason other than port conflict.
Port conflict can be fixed the way apache does it for example (don't start the
service if a program is already listen on imap port). That will ease miration
from one imap server to courier-imap or in some complex case allow running
different imap server on the same computer with different ports.

OK, I'll take a look at it.

 Racke

Bug#515585: kvm: Doesn't work correctly with evdev

2009-02-16 Thread Thomas Preud'homme
Package: kvm
Version: 83+dfsg-1
Severity: normal

KVM in Debian don't work well with evdev. In particular, up and down
don't work. It seems in Ubuntu they have applied successfully [1] the
Debian patch for vnc-gtk to kvm, althought I didn't try it myself. But
indeed, I haven't the problem when using kvm with -vnc and gvncviewer as
VNC client.

Bug#515587: linux-image-2.6.26-1-xen-686: Dom0 and DomU kernel stops with kernel panic inside VMware Workstation

2009-02-16 Thread Dieter Scholz
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-xen-686
Version: 2.6.26-13
Severity: important

I'm currently testing the Xen features of the new 2.6.26 kernel. I do this
usingVMware workstation.

I tested two scenarios:

* running 2.6.26 as a Dom0 kernel
* running 2.6.26 as a DomU kernel (using the Etch Xen kernel installed in a
Lenny system)

In both scenarios after booting into the new Xen kernel the virtual maschine
reboots after a kernel panic.

I've tested the new kernel on an old and real PC and Dom0 support works as
expected.

Greetings, Dieter

Bug#515438: lostlabyrinth-graphics: copyright problems

I think I've seen a lot of those graphics before.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/snes/secret-of-mana/screenshots/gameShotId,27149/

In upstream's tiles_1.0.tar.gz, there are 24 big images. To give just
the first one that I recognised, fsi10.png is from Dragonlance;
it's the front cover of ISBN 978-0786903054 for example.

Bug#515589: aptitude: German manpage doesn't reflect the change to full-upgrade

2009-02-16 Thread debian . 20 . gpburth

Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.11.11-1~lenny1
Severity: important
Tags: l10n

While talking in IRC I got reminded that "aptitude dist-upgrade" is no
longer preferred but "aptitude full-upgrade". Unfortunately the german
manpage doesn't reflect this change (the english one does).

Since this is quite an important change (although dist-upgrade seems to
work for now) I tagged it "important".

I know there are some other bugs with this translation (e.g. #432288),
but these are quite old and do in my opinion not match exactly.

I can't reproduce the issue here. Reloading config.html tens of times

Can you try to isolate the issue?

Bug#515590: PPP new upstream snapshot 2.4.5 git - rebased ubuntu patches

2009-02-16 Thread Alexander Sack

Hi,

The rebased package for ubuntu is available here:
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/ppp/2.4.5~git20081126t100229-0ubuntu1

The pieces are:

https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/ppp/2.4.5~git20081126t100229-0ubuntu1/+files/ppp_2.4.5~git20081126t100229.orig.tar.gz

As all patches were touched/rebased and a bunch was dropped i am not
sure if it makes sense to submit them individually. I would appreciate
if you could provide me your input on those and maybe take that
package for a new debian snapshot.

Let me know if you want me to send you something in a different form

Thanks!

Changing the group to utmp is what the screen-cleanup script does indeed, but
only when there was no /var/run/screen before (line 25
of /etc/init.d/screen-cleanup). Maybe it should be inforced generally by
swapping lines 25 and 26?

Reproduced on the freshly stable lenny.

Correct, Neither of these fonts is used by the installer anymore. No
objection from the D-I team to remove them from the archive.

And if they are kept in the archive, it would probably be best to drop
their udebs.

Davide: are there any other font packages we no longer use but which still

Bug#515591: facter returns NIS domain name instead of DNS domain name

2009-02-16 Thread Sergio Gelato
Package: facter
Version: 1.5.1-0.1
Severity: important

This is upstream bug http://projects.reductivelabs.com/issues/1291 .

facter domain

will try /bin/domainname before /bin/dnsdomainname. If the NIS domain
name is different from the DNS domain name, this gives undesirable
results. Note in particular that the "fqdn" fact is constructed by
concatenating the "hostname" and "domain" facts; this makes sense if
"domain" is the DNS domain name, but not if it's the NIS domain name.

At least in my environment, the behaviour is a regression from Debian
etch. I find it quite serious because the "fqdn" fact is used to
construct the subject name of SSL certificates used by puppet.

There is a partial fix upstream:

I spoke too early and I got another oops from Emacs: after the laptop

Bug#515593: rkhunter: stops unexpected on module-less kernel

2009-02-16 Thread Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe
Package: rkhunter
Version: 1.3.2-6
Severity: important

Hello,

rkhunter on a non-modular kernel stops unexpected at 'Performing Linux
specific checks':

...
  Performing trojan specific checks
Checking for enabled inetd services [ OK ]
Checking for Apache backdoor [ Not found ]

  Performing Linux specific checks
#

This is most likely due to a bug in linux_specific_checks() which exit-s
if no modules are found instead of return-ing.

Since this issue renders the package unusable to everyone using a
non-modular kernel, I set the severity of the bug to important.

1.3.2-6 is the version in stable. I don't know how to get a fix in
there, perhaps you do.

Font packages are usually much simpler than other Debian packages.

You can find many examples of font packages in Debian, ttf-* and the
ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts is working fine.

You will need a Debian sid installation so that you can reproduce any
bugs that may be filed.

You should join the pkg-fonts project so you can commit stuff to SVN:

http://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-fonts

You should also join the pkg-fonts mailing list:

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-fonts-devel

The first thing that should be done is to package the latest upstream
version, clean up the package and deal with the only open bug, which
happens to be an Ubuntu one:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts/+bug/42922

Good luck with your exams, cya soon!

I think this part might be the more important information, as it
contains info about irmc_sync.so. If you make msynctool crash, do you
still get the above backtrace with the debug symbols, and if so, can you
send them? If not, does a run without valgrind succeed now?

Also, can you maybe try two file-sync members first, (just two different
empty directories, and then add e.g. a random vcard to one of them) to
see whether that works fine for you.

I think the packages on your system are somehow broken.

Lenny released with 1.24-1, not 1.26-1, and the libdevel-stacktrace-perl
dependencies in both of those look correct to me.

Yeah it is :-) Thanks.

Actually that's a bigger "problem" here.
There are many packages in Debian which produce suspicious files or so.
e.g. I have to add:
ALLOWPROCDELFILE=/usr/sbin/anacron
ALLOWPROCDELFILE=/bin/dash
ALLOWPROCDELFILE=/bin/run-parts
on nearly each system.

And firefox/xulrunner also as for example some deleted files that he's
using.

Should we add all these files to the default config (of course
commented)?!

I mean the advantage would be that an users sees which files/processes
are probably ok, even when producing warnings.
The disadvantage is that the config file will grow and grow, and it will
be more likely that users comment something which they shouldn't (e.g.
commenting the whole list out in advance).

Still, the dependency information is wrong: libexception-class-perl should
depend on libdevel-stacktrace-perl (>= 1.2000), not (>= 1.20).

Ansgar

Never I could see.

If you have time to test more in depth, I would be happy to receive your
comments.

The warnings/errors are displayed onto console and the user is supposed
to be in front of the screen when updating the system

Bug#513836: VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH

2009-02-16 Thread Sam Morris
I just ran into this problem. It turned out that I did not have a recent
enough version of the kernel module packages installed; but I didn't
notice because of the rather confusing mismatch in version numbers
between versions of the package built with m-a and versions from the
Debian archive (2:2.6.26-6 vs. 2.6.26+1.6.6-dfsg-6).

Better dependencies on the kernel modules would have helped here. :)

No, I am not for this. It is the sysadmin's responsibility to check what
should or should not be whitelisted. Giving some examples is ok,
especially for "strange" files like .k5login.5.gz, but I don't think
adding numerous commented examples would be good (and adding *all*
possible files would not even be possible anyway).

Mind if we re-open this report.

Right, sorry for missing that.

This should probably still be RC as it breaks partial upgrades,
it just doesn't apply to lenny.

Bug#514114: New upstream release (1.16.2): fixes these and other hangs

2009-02-16 Thread Modestas Vainius
severity 514114 grave
tags 514114 upstream fixed-upstream
thanks

Hello,

a new upstream release is available (1.16.2) [1] which is supposed to fix
these hangs (which is confirmed in [2]). Please upload this new release as
soon as possible because xine 1.16 breaks quite a few apps including amarok
and kaffeine (read http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180339). Therefore I'm
bumping severity of this bug to RC to prevent broken xine release from
reaching squeeze. 1.14 does not suffer from these severe problems.

xine-lib (1.1.16.2) 2009-02-10
  * Build fixes related to ImageMagick 6.4 & later.
  * Fix an error in Matroska PTS calculation.
  * Some front ends hang due to the hang fixes in 1.1.16. Fix this by
removing a break statement.
  * Fix broken size checks in various input plugins (ref. CVE-2008-5239).
  * More malloc checking (ref. CVE-2008-5240).
  * Fix race conditions in gapless_switch (ref. kde bug #180339)
  * Fix a possible integer overflow in the 4XM demuxer. (TKADV2009-004.txt)

I think I made it apt-setup/security_path in Ubuntu. I don't remember

You can disable the os_specific test which does only do check on
modules.
This test was split into 2 tests (namely avail_modules and
loaded_modules) in the 3.2.4 release.

> This is most likely due to a bug in linux_specific_checks() which exit-s

Actually, it was a patch added to the Debian package, and you are right,
it should not exit but return!

This patch was dropped in the meantime, but should have been fixed for
lenny.

Micah, I have no experience at all with this, do you think such change
could qualify for a point release?

Cheers,
Julien

Corey, thank you for digging this out.

I think we're facing the same problems jackd users do.

Maybe we can solve this issue with pam_limits: Corey, could you please
try to add this line to /etc/security/limits.conf

Slmodemd hard memlock 256000

and see if this solves the issue even with the MCL_FUTURE flag set?

Thanks

Bug#515597: When windowed and without focus, it bounces the cursor around

2009-02-16 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: freedink
Version: 1.08.20090120-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

thanks for maintaining freedink.

After being trapped in full screen mode (I found no option to revert to
windowed), I started freedink in windowed mode. At that point I noticed
that the cursor was grabbed, and I couldn't get it out of the window
(funny that, to play the game, the cursor does not seem to have any
use).

I used alt+tab to try and use another application, and it worked.
However, every time I pass with the cursor on top of the freedinks
window, the cursor gets moved to somewhere else, which is quite weird.

Ciao,

Enrico
