Some help to help
Hi, lately I spent some spare time tryin' to understand how d-i works; I downloaded it, read the documentation and tried to play with it. I got in touch with the italian team responsable for the translation and translated a few po files myself. I'd like to get involved with the developement/test since I'm a programmer and I think I should have the required skills to give my contribution. I find really hard to get started: I understand that the priority is having something working as soon as possible (i.e. concentrate in the developement) but I think the documentation available at the moment lacks of some important things. I wanted to try a "make test" but I didn't know that you have to be in a sid chroot to do that. Now I got it working but last night I tried to compile a few components (main-menu, anna) and I couldn't compile with gcc 3.3.x ... I could inside woody with 2.95.4 (after some fixes in the makefile) but I cuoldn't link against libdebconfclient... gdb session
Hi, yesterday I asked a few things about getting started with d-i. Missing glyphs

The obvious suggestion would be to introduce a mechanism fo stripping unneeded glyps out of the udeb as we already do for ttf-dejavu [2] and ttf-freefont [3] packages. 3 megabytes difference is quite alot, and I'd like to dig a bit more to understand if there's anything else which causes this increase: will probablyhave the chance to work on this tomorrow evening. I'm pretty sure we can reduce this font as to be smaller than it was in previous version, but we must be careful not to remove needed ranges: I can help with this, but need some hints from people using the font and knowing what is really needed. I've prepared a new package [1] (including pdf chart) and committed the changes to svn [2]; I think this is the best I can do at the moment, since stripping too much would lead to problems similar to #428747, #411909 or #409509 Here some numbers: 73738 ttf-dejavu-mono-udeb_2.25-2_all.udeb 123660 DejaVuSansMono.ttf I've managed to strip some more glyphs out of the other udeb, saving around 44Kb out of the ttf files, so I think the situation is not too bad. Upstream is about to come up with a new release (expected to be dropped next weekend): shall I wait for it or do you prefere going through 2.25-2 first? It's something language dependent (actually depends on how
aspell-${lang} has been configured); some languages accept words
containing both "-" and "." others accept one or none of them; here
are some examples:
"fr" words can use both "-" and "."
"nl" wordlists can have words containing "-" but does not accept words
containing "."
"it" can't use neither "-" not "."
If all languages could use such characters inside words, we could put
those words in the common wordlist.

ttf-dejavu: what's next?
Today ttf-dejavu 2.13-1 has been migrated into testing (yay!); version 2.14 has just been released upstream and I've worked on packaging the new version. In the meanwhile Frans, has spotted some problems (see [1]) with the oblique variant which are being worked on; of those problems, the extra space between "d" and "u" is the most annoying and IMO it'd be nice if it could be fixed for the version of dejavu used with etch. As eplained in #409509, the problem has nothing to do with 2.14 upstream, but
it's a problem
introduced by me when stripping out the wrong range out of the udeb.

changes can't be seen to the naked eye and are explained by one
of the upstream developers in [2]
Note that there are no differences between deb and udeb when using 2.15-1
(i.e. glyphs are safely stripped out of the original ttf)
2.15-1 includes also a fix for #411308 (see [3])

Adding spellchecker stats to existing d-i stats
I'd be interested in adding infos obtained with the spellchecker to the statistics pages, so that everytime a new error is spotted translators know about it. ATM seppy's script comes up with the following: ... Global statistics: 1593t2f0u (99%) (total strings: 1595=100%) (From all it.po files) Master: 1462t2fu Spellcheck: unknown words in master file.. ... Currently, the spellchecker page (see [1]) reports various columns; the relevant information needed to produce useful stats is contained in the following columns: "Unknown words" - available only for languages with an aspell-lang dictionary "Suspect variables" "Specific checks" "Codepoints" - not sure this is needed but might be useful anyway I just modified the scripts as to produce numerical information for the above columns (can't commit since svn is not working). Now, the above infos should be fetched and the line saying "Spellcheck: unknown words in master file.." should be changed into something like (for example) "Spellcheck: 3u5v12s149c" languages with no aspell dictionary should be probably handled differently: maybe using "-1u". let me know what you think about this. Spellchecker: added check for unmatched pairs
I just committed a patch which makes it possible to look for unmatched pairs; ATM it checks for () [] « » and \" there are other combinations which are language specific i.e: '' „“ and others. 87 new errors have been spotted: please take some time to fix those (see [1]). [g-i] Segfault: missing symbol
A few days ago I realized g-i was building but caused a segfault when running debconf. Using an unstripped version of libc the segfault disappeared, meaning that some needed symbol was stripped from libc. [g-i] problems using dejavu as default font
After spending some time trying to switch g-i as to use ttf-dejavu as default font, I'm writing down the infos I collected so far hoping someone will help getting it to work. The current set of fonts uses ttf-freefont as default and a very old version of dejavu font (IIRC something lik 2.2); for my tests, I use an environment containing only dejavu and freefont ttf files and play with /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to decide which font to use as a default: gtk-font-name="BitstreamCharter 12" # if I want to use dejavu gtk-font-name="FreeSans 12" # if I want to use freefont Using the current version of ttf-dejavu (2.4.1-1) the frontend crashes when dejavu is set as default font but if freefont is set as default font, all languages displayed via dejavu 2.4.1-1 just work fine. I've asked for some help on #dejavu and been told pango > 1.11 (which added OpenType features support to Latin script) is the cause of many problems and they suggested to try DejaVuSansLGC: the frontend does not crash but the image just freezes without displaying all the text in the main menu and once I get control back I see this: debconf: dl-close.c:202: _dl_close: Assertion `(*lp)->l_idx >= 0 && (*lp)->l_idx < nloaded' failed. I just tried to use dejavu 2.5 inside an unofficial environment based on the latest libs (gtk+ 2.9 and such) and it does _not_ crash anylonger: I don't know if that's a bad or good news. It means that it probably does not make sense to keep on fighting with fonts before g-i based on the new libs is out. the first release will look a bit unconsistent as far as fonts are concerned, but at least we do support _all_ languages which is a great plus indeed. one more lesson learnt: before spent debugging things with the old libs give a go to the new ones. AFAIK gtk+ 2.10 should be ready sometimes in May 2006 (see [1]): "2.10 – GTK+ 2.10 is planned to be released around May 2006. Possible features include printing support and better introspection." As said before, the best we can do is try and come up with an unofficial udeb based on some CVS snapshot (maybe working together on an Alioth repository), and see what happens: if 2.10 will be out in time, the udeb can be used to give support to gtk debian packagers (in case they needed any: compilation flags come to my mind); if 2.10 delays too long and we're ready with our udeb, we can decide to use our 2.9.x package (it wouldn't be too different than using the 2.0.9 as far as alignement with upstream is concerned). [g-i] Dejavu as default font
I just applied the necessary changes needed to make ttf-dejavu the default font for the graphical installer. The tests I run recently got debconf to just crash if dejavu was used as default font, and I don't actually know what fixed it. Hi Dave, To build the -directfb-dev package you can use the following options: "--disable-xlib --disable-ps --disable-pdf --enable-directfb=yes" As soon as you've something ready to test, I'll use it to try and compile the gtk+-directfb_2.8.17 packages, which is the last bit of the endless stack of libs needed for g-i. I grabbed a g-i image [1] created by Attilio and based on recent libs, unpacked the initrd.gz file contained in the iso into a directory; I then replaced the libcairo files with the ones included in your udeb and run the gtk frontend after chrooting in that directory and it worked. I think it's time to "pass the ball" to the gnome team since cairo-directfb seems to work fine: - the udeb has been succesfully used to build an unofficial image of the graphical installer [1] - I installed the -dev package on a sid chroot and managed to compile gtk+-directfb_2.8.17 (configured using "--with-gdktarget=directfb") using the patch by Attilio plus a few changes needed to reflect the "cairo-directfb" new namespace and some cleanup. The updated patch is attached and is now organized as an unique text file. I tried to rebuild starting from a clean cvs checkout + patch and it works fine. Bug#373253: [g-i] crash if switch to VT2 on AMD64
Package: cdebconf-gtk-udeb Version: 0.102 Tags: d-i when switching to VT2 (CTRL-ALT-F2) the frontend crashes; this is known to happen on AMD64 only. A similar bug (#339379) was fixed a while ago on i3386; on AMD64 the crash happens also if the frontend is not busy when the switch happens. Not sure I'll be attending the meeting scheduled for Saturday either (weekends are always a big "?" for me). Here's a summary of the ongoing activities related with g-i: * Fonts --- ATM some fonts are not yet available as official udebs, but as tarballs fetched at compile time from [1]; this is not not acceptable as a long term solution. In particular here's a list of fonts file and associated bugreport: - ttf-farsiweb_0.4-2.tgz (#355447) - ttf-tamil-fonts_0.4.7.tgz (#358226) - ttf-thai-tlwg_0.4.4-3.tgz (#372799) ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts (#356333) will be added to the above list as soon as #373836 will be fixed. In the meanwhile Dejavu 2.6 hit unstable (thanx Christian!!) and it is now used as default font for g-i (screenshots in [6]). The Wiki [2] has been updated and reflects most of the changes happened recently. I personally think that the future looks bright and it's just a matter of time before the udebs will hit the archives. * new core libraries There's a lot going on with the packaging of the new generation of graphic libraries used by the g-i; a lot happened after the Extremadura session in January and I'm confident that in the short term we'll have a set of new libraries that will fix most of the known problems. The only missing pieces are now libcairo2 (>= 1.1.6) compiled with directfb backend and gtk+-directfb (>=2.8.17) as for libcairo Dave Beckett (maintainer of the package) produced some test packages (1.1.6 and 1.1.8 a few days later) which have been tested and used to produce unofficial iso images (see [3]). It is still unclear if libcairo2-directfb-dev.deb has to be produced along with the other (u)debs or not; IMHO it should be produced, in case somebody wanted to use directfb instead of X, since directfb is in the archives. Once libcairo will be ready the gnome team will have all the components needed to produce the last piece of the huge stack! Josselin Mouette and Sebastien Bacher have been involved in the discussion, and the final agreement is that the gnome team will produce the (u)debs needed for g-i based on 2.8.x libraries integrating a patch produced by Attilio [4], later on revised and adapted by myself [5] in order to get it working with the new cairo packages. Note that now gtk+2.8.18 has been released, but the very same patch is still compatible. gtk+-directfb packages: call for help
Hi Josselin, Dave Beckett has worked on producing the libcairo packages (with and without directfb backend enabled) and an experimental version is available in [1]. We've tested it and used it for testing a patch which adds the directfb backend to gtk+ 2.8.17/18 (you can get the patch from [2]). There are still a couple of minor issues which need to be sorted out before cairo is ready to be uploaded to the archives (see [3]) and what we still are unsure about is if a libcairo-directfb-dev.deb package should be produced along with the other (u)debs. We think there's everything you need to produce gtk+-directfb packages; it's not officially available yet, but packaging could be done anyway and would help the d-i team to start working on migrating from old libraries to new ones.
