I think it's because old gtk+ libs did not need cairo which was introduced later on; Can't remember the details but IIRC the directfb backend was introduced sometimes around Jan 2006. > Is this packaged somewhere else or shall i just guess what it contains? I'm afraid it's the second option :) Shouldn't be too hard though: you can take a look at [1]. I guess that the only important bit is the "--enable-directfb --disable-xlib" options.
