[Debconf-discuss] Thank you!

2015-08-16 Thread Martin Steigerwald
Hi!

(Mail will appear a bit later than creation date of it, cause no WLAN atm.)

I thank you for "Creating a new environment for newcomers" and "New to
Debconf" BOFs yesterday.

I thought "Wow, this is much on Debconf", thought being overwhelmed. There
especially the story by vagrant helped me about even shutting down at times on
his first DebConf. I appear to be highly sensitive – at least its a check,
check, check, check for me on questionaires regarding HSP –, I perceive much,
I take in much and so it is a lot of new impressions for me and I may have
been shortly before shutting down myself yesterday.

Also the mentoring of the month thing Andreas mentioned: I thought I could
use something like this. Even on a smaller scale of working on my existing
packages while being able to ask questions where I am stuck.

So now I feel motivation again to unstuck some of my packaging work I left
alone after having felt frustrated about some experiences I had during the
high phase of systemd related discussions after which I even unsubscribed from
debian-devel (still unsubscribed there). I didn´t work on Debian packaging
since then.

I already started to find out that even after all my experiences I
still see Debian as the distro I prefer, want to use and want to contribute
too, but I am now also slowly realizing that Debian as a project of people may
be more inclusive of inviting new people to it than I thought and that my
impressions I got from mailing list participation are just a part of the
picture and may very well be biased by the way of communicating there. That my
work doesn´t need to be perfect initially and I am invited to just ask about
ways to improve it. I will do so in another mail.

So I intent to work on my packages again since a long time. Between talks and
the phases of rest I intend to grant myself to process everything. Ideally I
want to become a DM regarding these packages, of course working in a team
where it makes sense (like together with Marc on atop).

So for this mail: Just thank you! I am happy I decided to challenge myself to
go to DebConf with one week of meeting people in person I may have build some
preconceptions through mailing list communications before.

So thank you to Andreas, Francesca and Enrico, but also to all the members of
the organization and video team for making DebConf possible.

Thank you,

[Debconf-discuss] BOF for working on existing packages?

2015-08-16 Thread Martin Steigerwald
Hi!

I think I saw a BOF for working on new packages in the schedule sometime I
mostly could attend, except for a smaller talk I would like to attend to at
the beginning of it (no WLAN here and I don´t want to switch on smartphone
with mobile network here atm).

Yet I think I didn´t found any BOF to work on existing packages. I am stuck
with several packages for various reasons and I want to tackle what I right
now perceive as obstacles. I detail now and maybe there is a workshop where I
can bring this in or maybe if I am at some time between talks trying to hack
on things someone may be able and willing to help.

fio: I just found out yesterday that I again messed up my gbp packaging
repository with somehow having merged debian packagaging master branch to
upstream branch with now a "debian" directory in it and a merge conflict. I
had an attempt at solving this, but still get merge conflict on importing new
upstream version. I thought I finally got how gbp works, but now I again
freaked out with it.

fsmark: I am stuck with upstream wanting a native package, but on request of
previous sponsors I made it a gbp one with different branches for packaging
and upstream.

distkeys: We are upstream of this. I really want to get this in and meanwhile
made it work with newer ruby with the help of someone from german ruby IRC
channel. I still think it provides some value even with puppet and other
configuration management systems in Debian. Its scope isn´t config management
but distributing public SSH keys on lots of machines at one. And it can do so
for machines behind firewalls by automatically creating SSH local post
forwardings to access them. We basically maintain all of the SSH keys of own
machines and customer machines with it. It can update the machines of one
customer in one go. I will maintain upstream and the packaging of it anyway,
but I´d love to see this in Debian.

atop: Help Marc Haber with updating atop packaging. I got packaged 2.1
version, but I was stuck with atopacctd daemon not working well. I think this
may have been fixed in latest atop 2.2. I want to import it and see from
there, and also clear up any questions related to systemd service files. I
created some, but atop also has some. Ideally I would also like to create
netatop and netatop-dkms packages, but packaging a kernel module appears
challenging to me.

filebench: This was stuck over licensing questions in the past, but I think
after some updating of the packaging, may well be ready to be uploaded.

I´d really like to find ways to move forward with all of these packages, one
package at a time.

All this work is up on github.com/teamix (some are also on alioth).

Thanks,

I didn't attend the BOF and won't attend the live demos. I was wondering
if a interesting time to display the hash is on the morning
briefing. That way lot of us will see it, as there is no other event at

[Debconf-discuss] Crypto Currency, Finance and BitCoin BoF - 18:00, Stockholm (Adhoc)

2015-08-16 Thread Daniel Pocock

I've put this session on the ad-hoc noticeboard by the registration desk

The session is open to anybody who wants to discuss anything relating to
these topics

As a free software operating system, Debian clearly has advantages that
make it relevant for these types of activities, whether it is mainstream
financial software or alternative topics like crypto-currency and Bitcoin.

I can provide an introduction to the topic and a demo of at least one of
the things I've been working with.

I probably can't make 18:00, but if there are people interested less
in the currency/finance aspect of Bitcoin, but more in innovative
uses of the blockchain, I'd love to chat any time.

I've been an early supporter of Ethereum¹ and Counterparty², both of
which could e.g. replace Debian voting entirely, and I think there's
an amazing amount of potential here.

¹) Ethereum is a Turing-complete platform on the blockchain with
decentralisation and global consensus built

²) Counterparty is about finance tools, and esp. crypto-equity and
provides e.g. dividends and voting for shareholders of all kinds.
Think DEBCOIN. http://counterparty.io/

Martin, thanks for raising this so quickly.

Given that 18:00 isn't good for you and that it may be hard to fit all
these things in one session (as I also have some finance things that are
not specific to Bitcoin), I would suggest having a different BoF
specifically for something like "Alternative uses of the BitCoin
blockchain" or "Alternative uses of BitCoin concepts". Do you want to
propose a time for that or should I? I would like to be able to attend
that too, but please be aware I leave Tuesday afternoon.

Daniel

A second BoF sounds doable. Please feel free to schedule it. Monday
18:00 would work for me.

Not especially, but I guess at least this one is short enough for a MTB:

 http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9762198

The climb of Konigstuhl from the south is pretty much deserted
traffic-wise. And the descent is quite fun if you're into such things -
easily hit 80kph+ with good brakes..

As mobile, I prefer how summit do: the talks ordered by time, not first by room
and then time. (easier to navigate).

It is not clear what license are the javascript we are supposed to run on our
machines for the stable version, so it is not so static as you wrote.

BTW: We can integrate the module schedule into summit.

[Debconf-discuss] West Coast Swing Workshop this evening?

2015-08-16 Thread Thomas Koch
It kills me to hear the nice music at the reception and not having danced for
more than a week.

Since there is no other program: Is anybody interested in a spontaneous West
Coast Swing workshop this evening?

What would be a good room to use? Heidelberg might be fine if we make a bit
more space in the front. Can we use the sound system?

WCS can look like this after +10 years of practice:

Thx, sorry for the late announcement.

We rented a karaoke system, mainly because dkg does awesome Elvis

I'd say we install it in Berlin&London to be used after the events
are over today.

The set will be available for free use throughout the week.

Would interested people please find me? We need to set it up first.

Hi,

the FSFE booth will be around for maybe another hour or so, but then
close down and be gone.

So if you were planning on buying some of their stuff later on, now is
the time to do so.

[Debconf-discuss] Broken Charger

2015-08-16 Thread Sven Bartscher
Greetings,

Unfortunately my laptop charger is broken and I can only charge my
laptop with very much luck and jiggling it around.
It has 19V, 3.42 and is manufactured by ASUS.
If you have such a charger to give away, borrow or share during DebConf

Here's something simple that seems to work:

1. Fix Joey Hess' script to output html that seems to be better
tolerated by some tools (attached)

2. You should change the number of columns at the top of the script to
something that suits your device (I used 2, it was originally 12).

3. Create the HTML using the haskell script. Do not do the UTF8 iconv
step, the dc15 ksp text file is already in UTF8. Modify the HTML in a
text editor if you want to add sha information, etc.

4. Use firefox to fill the form, and SAVE TO PDF to record it. Worked
on my old android device just fine. Test it a bit to ensure it works,
just in case.

The saved PDF should have the checkboxes filled (test it to ensure it
works!). You will need to OCR it later or manually process that PDF,
just like if you had used paper.

Alternatively, write a consumer for Joey Hess form and feed it to caff
to skip the OCR/manual process, if you're feeling like it ;-)

Futher corrections to the script and procedure are quite welcome!

[Debconf-discuss] More service-impacting network upgrades

2015-08-16 Thread Richard Hartmann
Dear all,

the server we're using for DHCP, some routing, and other random
services has died for the second time within thirteen hours.

We will move away services from it, but that means we will once again
impact connectivity.

We may or may not end up upgrading the software on the wireless access
controllers while we're at it, which would lead to an additional
downtime of 30-60 minutes, but we will avoid that if we can. We will
let you know if we do.

I'm sure we can organise another session later in the week too - by
all means go ahead and add a second one in the same wiki page?

Unfortunate timing for the first session, I agree; it was specifically
to allow Bradley Kuhn to join us before he flies home.

[Debconf-discuss] Ruby Team packaging Workshop - Monday at 18:00

2015-08-16 Thread Antonio Terceiro
Hey all,

I few people showed interest on Ruby packaging, so we scheduled an
ad-hoc session. It will be at room Wien, tomorrow (Monday) at 18:00.

The initial idea is to go over a few Ruby packages, discussing
Ruby-specific issues and how to solve them. It will be facilitated by
myself and Cédric Boutillier.

2015-08-16 Thread Richard Hartmann
Dear all,

we untangled the hairball and things should be working as expected.

If things do not work, please find us at the NOC.

Special thanks to jcristau and luca for powering through the night with me.

Well, if enough care is taken, it could be acceptable to have some
cheese cut in advance : any kind of hard cheese such as Beaufort,
Gruyère (the real Swiss one, not the fake bad French), Tome (or
Tomme), can easily survive without drying after being cut.

So, if that may help the C&W team, I wouldn't object and call for a TC
vote about the bad behaviour of the cheese master, his deputy cheese
mistress and all their cheese minions.

I think the C&W is in good hands and I'll indeed share some with you
guys tonight.

I hope you mean
"I wouldn't (object and call for a TC)"
instead of
"I (wouldn't object) and (call for a TC)"

:)

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Lost+Found: Lost key for locker with the number 1

2015-08-16 Thread Michael Weghorn
Hi Martin,

my colleague found a key in the dining room yesterday. He handed it in
at the hostel's reception, so you can probably get it from there (if it
is the one you lost).

Best regards,
Michael
