Customs too? How about goods you bring (IIRC you mentioned you have
cheese)? Nothing specific?

Just to confirm: the beast named "R3DVSWITCH" is on its way along with
its power adapter and a bunch of firewire cables, along with me. The
laptop is in my carry-on bag while the rest travels with the chees^W^W
my main bag, already registered for MGA.

Customs was not also painless but also quick. Smile, put your bags on
the belt, smile, take our bags, hand over your custom declarations
form (where I had checked "no" on all questions), say goodbye.

It least that's how I did it :)
(From what I've heard from others it was the same for them.)

[Debconf-discuss] cdn.debian.net pointing at .mit.edu mirror from DC12 connections

2012-07-02 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

My annual DebConf report, knowing that network setup is not finished:

Here at UCA, cdn.d.n is pointing at mirrors in:

fine via apt-get when on wired network)

First question: as I asked previous DebConfs, would it be possible to
point cdn.debian.net to the internal mirror ("todo va", I am not in a
hurry)?

Second question not related to DebConf12: is the current setup OK or it
should be adjusted WRT the UCA mirror?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

This only reinforces my resolve not to participate in assassins, even
though I like the game quite much.

In 2007, I was killed before my target had even arrived. That sucked.

In 2008, I was killed before I even knew the game had started. I guess
it must've been about 5 minutes after opening. That sucked even more.

If you're a well-known person (who appears with a faithful picture on
planet debian, amongst other things), then you're an easy target, and
people having to kill you have an unfair advantage.

If there's not going to be any way for me to figure out who my target
is, even though my appointed assassin will immediately know who I am by
just looking at my name, I'm not going to participate.

that mirror is located at UNI, not UCA. (its on the other side of the street,
but I'm not sure we dont have international-routing to there ;)

sounds like a good idea. I'd also support redirecting ftp*.debian.org to the
internal mirror. (btw, on homer in /root/test there should be one and the is
also a root-screen session running debmirror... feel free to set this up
properly.)

I was told in April/May that in the past that mirror was very unreliable,
thats why noone was using it.

Maybe this has changed, maybe not. I suggest to talk to locals about this
first, before changing cdn.d.n.

thanks & cheers,

[Debconf-discuss] Volunteering for Front Desk!

2012-07-02 Thread Norman Garcia
Hi!

We have now created a wiki page where you can volunteer to help on the
Front Desk:

http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf12/Frontdesk/Shifts

Please consider adding yourself there for a few shifts. The front desk is
in the hacklab, with cooling, electricity and network, so most of the time
you can just sit at the desk and continue hacking.

We expect to have a training session about 18:00 each day, so no special
knowledge is required.

Thanks,

Norman Garcia

I was pulled aside at the customs x-ray in MGA because of the amount of
electronic and networking equipment in my checked luggage. The customs
agent opened my bag, and i smiled and explained i was going to a
conferencia tecnologica (my spanish is terrible). i showed him the
spanish version of the dc12 invitation letter that i got from Leandro.
he asked to keep the letter, i agreed, and he gave me my bag and sent me
on my way without a hassle.

Very smooth, actually, and everyone was friendly about the situation.

If you're carrying gear for the conference, i do recommend having a
printed copy of the invitation, though.

In 2009, I was killed after the game had already ended, so I did not
confirm the kill. The organizers decided to confirm it without asking
from me instead. This in fact changed the winner of the game (which
wouldn't have been me either way). When I complained on the mailing
list, I was told that the rules do not matter, because it's only a
game.

After that, I have not played.

Also it seemed to me that players have had a vastly different notion
of what consists a valid kill. That late kill was made in a busy
hacklab while I was talking with other people, lightly touching with a
sock so well hidden that nobody of those I was talking to noticed and,
in fact, it took me a quite a while to understand what this assassin
wanted.

Not necessary, in my experience.

I got there with three twinpacts, and had a baggage check, too. It took
me about five minutes of explaining, but I was allowed to go on, without
any letters of invitation.

Though I suppose it can't help :-)

Well, nobody has, as there has been to game at DC10 or 11.

The best I can pomise is that the game *will* get attention and I
commit myself to do the best for a fair game.

I keep standing with my answer to Wouter: sure, more "visible" persons
have harder times, that's part of the game but, from my own
experience, I can tell this is also part of the fun..:-)... And
seeking an unknown target while still trying him|her to not notice
that you're after him|her is also fun. Ask some of my targets to learn
how I managed to catch them.:-). One of them keeps offering me great
venezuelan Ron at every DebConf.

Really, the more players we have, the best is the game. Wouter, Sami,
(re)consider joining..:)
