[Debconf-discuss] Train Madrid → Caceres

2009-05-24 Thread Joachim Breitner
Hi,

I’d like to book my train from Madrid to Caceres on July 16th now, and I
have some questions that (I think) have not been answered yet here or on
the web pages.

* I will arrive with the night train at 9:10 at MADRID CHAMARTIN. Is a
train leaving from MADRID-PUERTA DE ATOCHA at 09:55 possible and safe to
catch?

* When querying from http://www.renfe.es/horarios/english/index.html
(and also on[1]), I see this train leaving at 9:55. But when searching
for a train via http://www.renfe.es/, under „Compra de Billets“, I only
get two rather late trains (leaving at 16:25 resp. 22:25). What am I
doing wrong?

* Would I gain anything by waiting for the return ticket to become
available, and booking both together?

* Should I select the „Open return“ option? What does it mean, after
all? :-)

* Is it normal that there are no tickets available for the busses at
http://www.venta.avanzabus.com/ yet?

* Is anyone else traveling at that time? Debacle, what about you?

Thanks in advance,
Joachim

I dont think its possible nicely, esp. if you dont know the stations etc.
Maybe you *could* make it with running from train to subway and train and
luck or with a taxi, but not really.

Probably nothing, all websites suck and those to buy scheduled services like
trains or planes suck more. On the renfe website I had the best results with
searching with the form on the top left on www.renfe.es.

Actually the cheapest is to buy online between 90min and 24h before the
journay. But thats definitly not the safest.

In any case you will have to print your online ticket.

If you go to the station and buy it there (up to immediatly until the train
leaves), the one-way price is 31 EUR.

Holger

I wonder if Ian Jackson, Wookey, Nick Bane, Daniel Glassey are aware of
this, according to
http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/Debconf9/Travel/TrainBooking they are
trying to do exactly that. Is anyone of you reading this?

[Debconf-discuss] Arriving late in Madrid, what to do?

2009-05-24 Thread Alexander Reichle-Schmehl
Hi!

I think I got a quite suboptimal flight to Madrid, since I'll arrive
there in the evening (20:25 to be precise) on the 23rd.

Looking at [1] it seems I'll miss the last regular train to Caceres, but
there is a "TRENHOTEL" leaving Madrid at 22:25 arriving at 01:51. But I
can't book that train via that web interface (yet?).

So the questions I have currently are:

- Is it possible at all to get to that train in two hours from the airport?
- If I arrive at Caceres in the night, can I get to the conference venue?
- One Option for me would to stay the night in Madrid and get to Caceres
the next day. Any recommendations on where to stay?

Best regards,
  Alexander

We are hoping that we can make this connection. Ths subway site says
this trip takes 20 minutes. I think that gives us a fighting chance. A
back-up plan would be smart.

We are (well I am and IWJ is). The mystery of the missing train is
currently being put down to not being available yet. If it remains not
available for too long we'll give up and presumably go by bus.
Returning on Friday has similar questions arising.

IWJ has looked at this in more detail than me. And Miriam Ruiz posted
some useful info recently on how to get the best prices whilst still
using the site mostly in English.

I asumme we can work this out between us. Somone phoning up renfe and
asking might be useful.

> Caceres-Madrid: 09:25-12:51 --> no such train

Both these trains are now appearing on the RENFE web site.

Exact schedules are:
16:25-20:02 Madrid-Caceres
9:25-13:11 Caceres-Madrid

Both are TALGO trains (the Spanish tilting trains that are allowed to
run faster on conventional tracks) and probably have fewer stops than
other trains, so I would recommend choosing them. They're a little bit
more expensive (30.9euros instead of 24.5 for normal prices).

TALGO trains have a "web fare" that's is 12.4euros.

Please note that one cannot book mor ethan two months in advance. So,
for instance, I can book for July 21st but not for 31st.

These trains, as well as all other trains *except the "TRENHOTEL"
night trains* (first Caceres-Madrid train and last Madrid-Caceres
train) are accessible for disabled people. That requires a specific
assistance that has to be booked in advance (I guess they use special
elevators or ramps in the stations).

it's 2km or so (3?) to the venue, so you would either want to take a taxi or
arrange to be picked up by someone local / with a car.

around the sol and gran via metros stations there are lots of hostels, but I'm
sure there are better options. wikitravel madrid also is useful.

The renfe webpage is indeed fun -- yesterday it showed one more train
than when I looked a few days ago ...

Hi,

Neither taxi, nor the subway (Metro) are the right option from Chamartin
to Atocha. The way to go is by train (Cercanias), which at that time of
day should have a frequency of <10min, and a trip time of <15min.

In renfe.es you have a 'Cercanias' drop menu (IIRC) where you can choose
'Madrid', and then see the timetable between Chamartin and Atocha.

It is doable, but you don't have much margin for errors.

sounds better than having to wait for 7 hours in madrid (after being on
the rails for a whole day already). If only the 9:55 train would appear
in the booking view of renfe.es...

Is it possible to book the Cercanias ticket together with the Madrid →
Caceres ticker? If not, where and how can I get the Cercanias ticket?

Thanks,
Joachim

These two TALGO trains actually start and arrive in Madrid
*Chamartin*. Both also stop at Atocha station.

However, as Chamartin is quite more convenient to reach from the
airport (line 8 all down to Nuevos Ministerios, then line 10,
direction Hospital Infanta Sofia, stop at Chamartin) , some people
might want to take them from Chamartin.

Also note that the *night trains* *to/from* Cáceres (which are indeed
Madrid-Lisbon trains) start and arrive in *Chamartin without stopping
at Atocha*. I updated the wiki accordingly.

When I search for an earlier date (up to 2009-06-14), I do get this
train (and a few other regional trains that did not show up for
2009-07-16). At the days from 2009-06-15 I see these trains, but it says
„TREN NO DISPONIBLE A LA VENTA“, until 2009-06-20. At even later days,
no connections are found.

Could it just be that tickets for REGIONAL trains (R-598 in this case)
are available later than tickets for the long distance trains?

Thanks,

Cercanias is a service close to what the subway is. I mean, it is used
daily by thousands to move around Madrid (Province). Its price is around
1 EUR for that trip, and IIRC it should be free for those changing long
distance trains between Chamartin and Atocha. I could confirm this
calling Renfe this week.

I believe that is indeed the case. Often it is 2 months, rather than 3
months, which means said trains should be bookable from about now.

That would be great. If do you so, make sure you cover the case where
the ticket to Chamartin (Nighttrain from Paris) and the ticket from
Atocha were bought independently.

And while you are calling, could you also ask when the regional train
tickets are going to be available online for July 16th and 31st, resp.
