Is cygwin setup.exe really compatible to WinXP Pro ?

2002-05-11 Thread Ronald Andersson

I'm a newcomer to the cygwin scene, so I may have missed something
fundamental here. However, I doubt it, as no special expertise should be
needed to follow installation instructions given on the home page (or should
it ?!?).

I've tried using the setup.exe in the main 'Install Now' link several ways,
but all attempts so far lead to the same result, which goes as follows.

1: I start setup.exe, either as local program or by opening it after link
clicking.
This is of course the same thing, except that it runs from local web
cache then.
2: The cygwin install wizard launches, and I click 'Next' to continue.
3: The program displays the three main options. from which I then choose
either
'Install from Internet' or 'Download from Internet' (The third option
being
useless to me, as I still haven't got any of the files.) I then click
'Next' again.
4: The program displays the download path, which I then confirm with
'Next'.
5: The program next displays the connection methods, from which I choose
either
'Direct Connection' or 'IE5 settings' confirming with 'Next' yet again.
6: Finally some action, as the mirror list is loaded. Strangely this list
is preceded by a
progress bar that never updates. It just 'sits there' quite empty
until the list has been
downloaded... But then the list is properly displayed, so that's OK by
me.
7: So I select a mirror to be used (and yes, I've tried several) and click
'Next' again.
8: Again I see that non-updating progress bar, until the server has finally
delivered
setup.ini to my system. After that the window content is replaced by
text saying:
"This space intentionally left blank"; (not very helpful) which stays
there forever...

In the last section the 'forever' part only applies as long as I leave the
system untouched though, as the installation program seems to have locked up
completely, ceasing even to update its window. If any other window covers
part of it, and is then removed again, then the window simply goes white,
except for the borders (maintained by Windows itself). It is also impossible
to close the window or the application in a normal fashion, as that only
leads to the familiar error message: "Not Responding".

As far as I can tell the program is dead as a doornail at this stage, so
installation is not possible.

I am using WinXP Pro (US flavor) with all the latest updates, so this should
not be due to any system components at my end. Nor should it be due to slow
speed at my end, as I have 1Mbit cable and a
1GHz system (Duron CPU).

I hope someone can clear up the situation, and provide a fix and/or
explanation for this problem.

Best Regards: Ronald Andersson

RE: Is cygwin setup.exe really compatible to WinXP Pro ?

2002-05-11 Thread Ronald Andersson

Thanks Robert and Chris, but that didn't help after all...

In fact I got exactly the same results as before, including the lockup after
downloading setup.ini. (That file being 98939 bytes long.) So the problem
remains unsolved.

Looking inside setup.ini, I note that it starts (apart from comments) with
the following two lines:

setup-timestamp: 1020997207
setup-version: 2.194.2.26

This doesn't match the version of setup.exe that your link led to, which was
2.218.2.4... I'm not sure if these need to match up or not, but it might be
a clue (I hope).

libdl an additional candidate for speclib'ed import library?

2002-05-11 Thread Ralf Habacker

Hi all,

relating to http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2002-01/msg9.html, where a
new way of creating cygwin import libraries is described, I have a note to qt-3.

qt-3 references to a libld.a, which contains the dynamic loading functions in
linux (and perhaps other os). Of course it is possible to remove this reference
in this project, but another way is to add this as specific importlibrary to the
cygwin package. http://www.linuxbase.org/spec/gLSB/gLSB/libdl.html tells
something about the related functions

Any comments ?

Regards

Ralf Habacker

I've also been looking at this, the slow 'make' and file access
times under cygwin.

The simplest test is this: take a directory with files and subdirs,
and run 'time ls -lR 1>/dev/null'. Do the same thing on e.g. BSD
or Linux. Note the extreme difference (on mine its minutes under
cygwin, seconds under BSD).
Now, to prove its not a windows issue, run a PC NFS server,
mount that same windows directory on the BSD box. Hmmm. Still faster
even over NFS over NTFS.
Conclusion: NTFS is fast enough, windows is fast enough, etc.

The underlying performance issue here must be with 'stat' and/or
'readdir' I think, there's no sub-processes being spawned, environment
passed, etc.

Any suggestions anyone?

Ah, thanks. So I started here and actually got nothing; sure, I see
"what packages do I install" and the fact that now it's just a base,
but nothing about missing DLLs. Through an extended search throught the
archives, which didn't turn up "cygintl" either early or in any Subject:
in the first few pages, I saw that ncurses libs are in libncurses*, which
I do see in my setup list -- and I also saw that the cygintl dll can be
found in the libintl and libintl1 packages and that I should reinstall
them. I have not the faintest idea, however, where to find them; they're
not listed under Libs in setup.exe and if they're under another category
then I've just plain missed 'em.

Oh, no, wait a sec... By looking (thank heavens I have vim installed
separately, eh?) through setup.ini I find that libintl is in the Devel
section, so I go and look through there. Imagine my surprise at *still*
not seeing it. Further digging gives me the hint that it's part of the
gettext package, which I finally find and install. Yay. I should be
done, right?

Nope. Running bash and trying to cat a simple file still gives me the
same error. Looking in c:\windows and c:\utils\cygwin still doesn't find
it. AFAICT it didn't get installed.

I look forward to someone providing me some more information, preferably
which will require less than half an hour to sort out to get to the meat.
Thanks in advance.

RE: where is cygintl-1.dll?

2002-05-11 Thread Harold Hunt

David,

In less than 10 clicks I went into setup.exe (having no idea where libintl1
is) and expanded the package tree to find All->Libs->libintl1. What was so
hard about that?

It may be that you have been working with a bad mirror site that doesn't
have recent packages (or maybe it is *way* out of synch). Try the
mirrors.rcn.net hosts if you can't find libintl1 in setup.exe's package
listing.

1.3.10 setup.exe crash downloading setup.ini (win98)

2002-05-11 Thread Fabrice PLATEL

Hi,
I got cygwin 1.3.10 installed 10 days ago and I had no problem with this
first install. Now I wanted to add some packages but the setup application
crash while downloading the setup.ini file around 90KBytes downloaded (never
the same size downloaded before crashing). I got a general protection fail
in module USER.EXE
I hope you will find why it fails, I tried rebooting my computer but it
didn't change anything
Regards
Fabrice PLATEL

Perl builds a static version of libperl for bootstrapping, but it gets
not installed. I think that it is not needed (well I have no idea for
what I should use it).

> See attached for more details, if interested.

That is interesting. miniperl is not able to load dynamic modules.

=
Can't load module IO, dynamic loading not available in this perl.
(You may need to build a new perl executable which either supports
dynamic loading or has the IO module statically linked into it.)
=

Now I think: What is the difference, to link against a .dll which
exports the symbols or link against an executable which exports
the symbols...?

Anyway, who wants to get a static libperl just needs to rebuild perl
and there it is.

Re: cp.ese bug report -- possible fix?

2002-05-11 Thread Charles Wilson

Well, I've attached a patch for this bug. However, it uncovered another
problem with 'cp -p src dest', when src is not owned by the current user.

(AROUND LINE 1170 in fileutils/src/copy.c):

/* Permissions of newly-created regular files were set upon `open' in
copy_reg. But don't return early if there were any special bits and
we had to run chown, because the chown must have reset those bits. */
   if ((new_dst && copied_as_regular)
   && !(ran_chown && (src_mode & ~S_IRWXUGO)))
 return delayed_fail;

   if ((x->preserve_chmod_bits || new_dst)
   && (x->copy_as_regular || S_ISREG (src_type) || S_ISDIR (src_type)))
 {
   if (chmod (dst_path, get_dest_mode (x, src_mode)))< HERE
{
#ifdef __CYGWIN__
char *p;

The chmod command returns with ENOENT. I have no idea why; the file has
already been created at this point...

Hello,
I've just figured out some information on my setup problem. If i use the
view button to change from catagory to partial without first selecting any

Any suggestions?

If the system UID is 18 then maybe cygwin should be translating that to 0.
Especially if 0 has no meaning to windows.

Do you mean you get a 'no packages to display' in the chooser? Or an
empty list?

Did you have an old copy of cygwin on the system? This is the sort of
behaviour I'd expect from setup if you have a /etc/setup/installed.db
file.

Are you able to select 'reinstall' for any of the packages?

Hello,
Yes. The initial packages, what is programmed in to setup to retrieve as

For lack of any good ideas on my part i was wondering if it is possible
to download cygwin packages manually to / then bunzip2 them and untar them,
if they'll be considered installed?
Kepp the suggestions coming please.
Thanks.

Well setup has no hardcoding for the 'initial' packages. All packages
are equal. I'm pretty much out of ideas as to how this could be
occuring.

Could you document your exact mouse clicks and keyboards strokes for a

I don't know if it has been suggested, but it would probably be a good
idea to wipe out your "Local Package Directory", too, just to eliminate
any possibility of caching.

There's a test version of make available now (or will be available soon

If you can confirm that it works, I'll release it officially.

Send success or failure reports to the mailing list, please.

Problem with setup

2002-05-11 Thread Dimitris Zygiridis

Hello
I use the latest version of setup.exe (2.194.2.24) and for the past
days it
terminates abnormally when I try to use it.
When it tries to download setup.ini and reaches about 98000 bytes,
Windows
reports that setup.exe caused an error and should be terminated.
I have used setup.exe for a long time, but this has been happening
only for the past few days for no obvious reason.
I would appreciate some help.

Thank you

Changes in latest snapshot

2002-05-11 Thread Christopher Faylor

There are several things of note in the latest cygwin snapshot:

The first is Christopher January's latest proc improvements:
http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-patches/2002-q2/msg00154.html

The second is an addition to cygwin's mount processing, i.e.:

  mount --no-executable -b c:/foo /foo

will tell cygwin that none of the files in the c:/foo directory or its
subdirectories should be opened to check for "executableness". This
should speed up file accesses -- especially for remote access via samba
or whatever.

This option was suggested some time ago. I had most of the logic in
cygwin already but never implemented the accompanying hooks in
mount.exe.

Another change to mount is that it now always defaults to '--system'.
You must specify '--user' if you want to use user mounts.

I'm thinking about making binmode the default, too.

The last thing of note is that writes to an fd opened for reading
will return EBADF. read behaves similarly. See:
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2002-05/msg00053.html

This version of the cygwin DLL will eventually become 1.3.11. The
release is currently waiting for the /proc stuff to stabilize and a
couple of bug fixes to materialize. Do not ask me when that will
all happen. I don't have an estimate. Definitely within the next
year, though...
