To repeat – when airplanes suffered from this we used to grab a snack and a
full tank of gas and fly around at 100% power (or METO) for three hours or so.
I would run your boat flat-out for a bit, that should help.

Looking closely at that picture, it looks to that they are not actually

Touche's stem casting got scratched beating up a dock box. Any good tips on
removing the scratches? Wire brush? MAG Wheel cleaner? (The boat will be
repainted so I can use an acid based wheel etching solution before the repaint
although I'd really rather not.)

Before you go try it, check your engine manual to see if you have a time
limited power settings. METO in airplanes is usually something like 5
minutes, my Atomic 4 can go 100% forever, and I have seen notes with
something like a 1 hour limit for redline RPM on some Yanmars.

Attached is the chart of rated continuous output. I couldn't find it but
immediately but the 1 hour limit for my 3HM35F is 3400 and the
instantaneous limit is 3600. When referring to 80% load I always assume
the continuous limit - 3200 for me. So basically whenever I run the engine
I try to maintain the tach above 2500. But RPM is only part of the
equation. Usually it is good enough but with a clean prop and bottom the
actual load might not be 80% since the engine has to work less hard to move
the boat the through the water.

Remember that these are only general guidelines. They don’t have to be
followed precisely. Based on my 40+ years experience, I believe that what
ultimately kills your engine is not how close you operated within the engine
manufacturers guidelines but more serious things like loosing crankcase oil.

Stus-List Re: Bottom paint

2020-09-21 Thread Matthew
FWIW, Practical Sailor gave ePaint's ZO-HP very high marks shortly after it
hit the market. Rather than use a biocide, the paint outgasses hydrogen
peroxide or something in sunlight, which the critters don't like. Being
environmentally aware (and incorrectly believing EPA would soon ban copper
paints), I painted my Custom 42 with ZO-HP about eight years ago and was
disappointed in several particulars: 1) the cost is higher than most bottom
paints; 2) the application conditions (temp/humidity) are relatively narrow;
3) it took a while for the paint to become hard, a result of which was
surface scarring caused by the travel lift straps the first year; 4) the
area near the waterline sloughs off and needs to be repainted annually
(which is more ablative than hard in my view); 5) for freshwater, the paint
did not perform any better than VC17 or my personal favorite, Baltoplate; 6)
after two coats (each two years apart), the paint started "cratering" here
and there (i.e., patches of the surface layer would come off, leaving a
crater-like uneven surface); and 7) it is very difficult to remove with
sandpaper after it's been on for a couple years. In short, although I liked
the owner of the ePaint company, I suggest passing on ZO-HP.

I have had similar experience with Vivid, which is supposed to be a hard paint.
It is hard out of the water (supposedly burnishable), but very very soft in
the water. Even with a microfiber pad, I get clouds of paint in the water when
cleaning. Can’t use anything abrasive at all. Others have reported similar
issues, but some have not had this problem (Edd in Florida). I have had to
repaint large areas every spring, especially near the water line. The slings
remove most of the paint in the lift area. Decent hard growth rejection, poor
slime reduction. Dave

Stus-List Re: Bottom paint

2020-09-21 Thread David Knecht
I have had similar experience with Vivid, which is supposed to be a hard paint.  It is hard out of the water (supposedly burnishable), but very very soft in the water.  Even with a microfiber pad, I get clouds of paint in the water when cleaning.  Can’t use anything abrasive at all.   Others have reported similar issues, but some have not had this problem (Edd in Florida).  I have had to repaint large areas every spring, especially near the water line.  The slings remove most of the paint in the lift area.  Decent hard growth rejection, poor slime reduction.  Dave

I think I could braid the grass growing close to my waterline, looks much worse this year.Looking for something else for next year.  Bill ColemanEntrada, Erie, PA   From: Robert Boyer via CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list@cnc-list.com] Sent: Monday, September 21, 2020 2:37 PMTo: Stus-ListCc: Robert BoyerSubject: Stus-List Re: Bottom paint I’ve been using the Petit SR-60 for the past 5 season in the Bahamas and ICW.  Of course, I add a new coat each season But it looked great every haulout.  I love this paint!Bob Boyers/v Rainy DaysC&C Landfall 38 (Hull # 230)(Spending winters in the Bahamas, summers in Baltimore, and somewhere on the ICW in between)blog: dainyrays.blogspot.comemail: dainyr...@icloud.comOn Sep 21, 2020, at 2:29 PM, Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List wrote: Do they know it works well in Oregon or do they just have a huge stock of it to get rid of LOLJoe Della Barba Coquina C&C 35  MK Iwww.dellabarba.com   From: Fred Hazzard [mailto:fshazz...@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, September 21, 2020 2:10 PMTo: Stus-List Subject: [EXTERNAL] Stus-List Bottom paint I am getting ready to have the bottom repainted.
