Stus-List Fwd: Whisker pole

2020-04-06 Thread Richard Bush via CnC-List
Thanks to all for the responses; FYI, I though I would share the response from
Forte, the manufacturer...

"The pole is painted in a high quality (Alexseal brand) 2 – part polyurethane
clear paint and it does serve as UV protection.  Most masts, outriggers, spin
poles etc are painted with the same paint and last for many years in the direct
sun.  Having said that, a little extra protection certainly would not hurt.  A
sun cover for storage would be nice, but if the poles starts to look crappy, it
can be disassembled and repainted and it will look good again.  As far as
cleaning, you can treat it just like it was a painted fiberglass surface
(similar to the side of your boat – although that is probably gelcoat).  Most
importantly I would say would be to keep sand out of it.    I don’t think I
would worry too much about heat build up from the sun, the carbon fiber tubes
are cured at 300F and the Tg is around 220F.  So they would have to get up past
220 before they epoxy started to soften and even that wouldnt hurt it as long
as it wasn’t under a lot of stress when it was that hot.

Great choice Richard--
Both my poles are Forte and have worked well and looked good for 10+ years. I
thought they were better made and were definitely less expensive than the
Forespar (?) poles at that time.

Thanks to all for the responses; FYI, I though I would share the response from

"The pole is painted in a high quality (Alexseal brand) 2 – part polyurethane

poles etc are painted with the same paint and last for many years in the direct

sun cover for storage would be nice, but if the poles starts to look crappy, it
can be disassembled and repainted and it will look good again.  As far as
cleaning, you can treat it just like it was a painted fiberglass surface
(similar to the side of your boat – although that is probably gelcoat).  Most
importantly I would say would be to keep sand out of it.    I don’t think I
would worry too much about heat build up from the sun, the carbon fiber tubes
are cured at 300F and the Tg is around 220F.  So they would have to get up past
220 before they epoxy started to soften and even that wouldnt hurt it as long
as it wasn’t under a lot of stress when it was that hot.

Re: Stus-List Sea water cooling pump for Yanmar 3HMF

2020-04-06 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Your pump likely has a rear O-ring seal on the shaft that may be shot--or the
shaft may be 'scored' from this O-ring after it broke up, etc. If the scoring
is slight, you may get away with some fine sanding and a new O-ring. If the
scoring is significant, you probably need to go for the entire pump--I doubt
that you could source the shaft only.

As long as you keep the clear coat on, and protected, you shouldbe good. My
pole peeled a little, and I got some clear coat, but never gotaround to
re-Applying it.  I don’t think it will normally peel, unless it isnicked, then
it starts.  If you touch it up right away, you can nip it in thebud.  They say
a good polymer on the clear coat, like ReJex will  do a good jobof protecting
the clear coat, while the clear coat protects the epoxy in thecarbon fiber.
My neighbor has a clear-coat carbon fiber spar on his J-160, andI don’t think
it has been touched since 1997. Or, if you want to baby it,  I have seen some
guys in the fleetput a little cloth bag under the boom, and store it there.

When replacing the original ribbed hose or even drain hose I use the
reinforcedclear vinyl beverage hose. It’s strong, flexible enough and will be
easier tosource too.

Wait .. is this the fresh water pump or the raw water pump? We replaced fresh
water pump on persistence in 2015 and I di not recall it being expensive. Was
3GM30F but I would think the newer engine pumps would not be that different or
more expensive. In summer 2011 the yanmar fresh water pump for 3GM30F from
local dealer was $211 CDN (approx. $0.50 USD).

Hope this helps

Mike
