Agreed with Andrew and Josh, none of those jobs are worth paying shop rates
for, and would add that it may also be worthwhile to verify that the main
engine ground stud and its terminals are free from corrosion, protected, and
tight. This caused an intermittent tach on windstar, among other things. Enjoy.

Stus-List Boat Speed Paddlewheel ?'s

2019-07-26 Thread nausetbeach--- via CnC-List
This year the boat speed paddlewheel on my Nexus Classic system seems to be
binding. I get 0 boat speed when motoring at 3-4 kts and it finally starts
to read when the boat accelerates to 5-6 kts, but it shows the boat speed ~
4 kts. I pulled the paddlewheel and left it sitting in a cup of fresh water
for several days to loosen any shrimp and other potential aquatic growth and
then used a tooth bush on it to clean it. I can spin the paddlewheel by
flicking my finger on it but still slows then stops much more quickly than
it used to.

I cannot see anything that might be binding the paddlewheel. Any
suggestions? Soak it in dilute white vinegar? Spray McLube on it? The
unit / system is long time discontinued so getting a replacement is not
possible.

TIA,

Brian

Brian,

First, replacements are readily available. Look for the 43 mm transducer. If
you can’t find one, contact me and I’ll find you one.

Second, I leave mine out unless I’m sailing.

Third, I spray mine with Corrosion Block. Probably doesn’t stay on long but it
makes me feel like I did something. Any lightweight oil should work.

I apply a bit of Vaseline to the speed wheel to discourage growth when/if I
forget to pull it.

As said, pulling is the best solution.

Hodges Marine has the Garmin GST 43 mm transducer for $122. The number on my
spare is 010-04283-00.

If you replace it, be sure and add stress relief to the cable where it exits
the transducer. Slide a couple 2” pieces of heat shrink down the cable, shrink
them then pour epoxy in the top of the transducer around the cable.

Re: Stus-List Boat Speed Paddlewheel ?'s

2019-07-26 Thread nausetbeach--- via CnC-List
Thanks Dennis. That certainly looks like it would work in the “Classic” thru
hull. Did not think Garmin was “supporting” any of the Nexus equipment via
replacement parts any more. Seem to recall Nexus stopped using the 43 mm (?)
and started using a larger size (78 mm??) a decade or so ago.

I replaced this current transducer ~ 15 years ago and did put some heat shrink
on the cable per your recommendation back then. That end has held up well –
it’s just the paddlewheel that is giving me issues…

Many thanks!

I have also been having issues with my speed transducer. I pulled the pin,
cleaned the wheel, made sure the pin was straight, and I could flick it by hand
and it would measure OK. Put it in the water, no good. Bought a new wheel, went
through the same deal, got the same result. I cannot figure out why it will
rotate freely in air, measuring accurately, and then won’t work at all when
installed. New wheel, old wheel, new shaft, old shaft, no change.

Any ideas?

My experience with the Nexus paddlewheel is that the transducer bushing
develops a bit of shmutz around the bottom perimeter which interferes with
the paddlewheel when pushed in. It spins free when removed but binds when
installed. You may need to clean the bottom of the bushing.

I have a Raymarine st60 paddle wheel. It is sensitive to how i insert it
paddle wheel unit into the tube and i believe that is because the tobe has
a little shutter which is supposed to slow water entering the boat when i
remove the paddle wheel. Just a little adjustment up or down and it can go
from showing zeros to speed i expect. I calibrated the I50 display against
gps speed on the chart plotter. Might help in your case

Re: Stus-List Boat Speed Paddlewheel ?'s

2019-07-26 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
Nope, our transponder housings are just plastic tubes – the transponder itself
has a couple of “O” rings to seal it. My instruments came with a plug which
looks just like the transponder without wires and paddlewheel, which goes in
when the transponder is out (lately, that is all the time because the unit does
not work). I have removed the wheel and cleaned the inside of the housing, I
may try my handy Dremel with a wire wheel).

Now that something just clobbered the masthead unit, I may just leave the depth
working and scrap the rest. Buy something else.

I have a Raymarine st60 paddle wheel. It is sensitive to how i insert it paddle
wheel unit into the tube and i believe that is because the tobe has a little
shutter which is supposed to slow water entering the boat when i remove the
paddle wheel. Just a little adjustment up or down and it can go from showing
zeros to speed i expect. I calibrated the I50 display against gps speed on the
chart plotter. Might help in your case

rotate freely in air, measuring accurately, and then won’t work at all when
installed. New wheel, old wheel, new shaft, old shaft, no change.

Any ideas?

Hodges Marine has the Garmin GST 43 mm transducer for $122. The number on my
spare is 010-04283-00.

If you replace it, be sure and add stress relief to the cable where it exits
the transducer. Slide a couple 2” pieces of heat shrink down the cable, shrink
them then pour epoxy in the top of the transducer around the cable.

I've always suspected what Gary is saying. Look at this site:

https://www.hodgesmarine.com/Garmin-Gst-43-Speed-Temp-Thru-Hull-Transducer-p/gar010-04283-00.htm

If you look close and use your imagination, you can see what Gary is
talking about. There is no extra border around the transducer. The paddle
wheel goes right to the edge of the transducer. So, if there is any growth
on the thruhull, it may interfere with the wheel's spinning.

Would have been nice if the wheel had a 1/4 inch or so of space all around
it that you could clean when you pull it.

Re: Stus-List Boat Speed Paddlewheel ?'s

2019-07-26 Thread Edward Levert via CnC-List
I have a ST 60 knot meter. The unit started reading intermittently and then not
at all even though the wheel spun freely and had no marine growth. I replaced
the paddle wheel and the speed registered. The old paddle wheel had 5-6 years
of annual bottom paint application. I have not gone back to the old paddle
wheel but I suspect that the paint build up on the wheel and the surface of the
transducer just above the wheel was of sufficient thickness to block the
impulse. Scrape any paint from the paddle wheel and transducer surface and try
it out.

2019-07-26 Thread Rick Taillieu via CnC-List
Gary,

You don’t say what brand you have but does the paddlewheel have straight or
curved paddles on it?

If they are curved you may have put the paddlewheel back on the transducer
backwards.

Re: Stus-List C&C33 Mark II Deck Creaking

2019-07-26 Thread Dave S via CnC-List
Sorry Andy - late reply

This creaks in some 33-2 models because the aft bulkhead is not tabbed to the
deck but sits in a groove in the headliner. Grab the handhold on the hanging
locker and push and pull and you’ll replicate the creak.
I fixed this last winter by cutting out the liner inside the hanging locker and
tabbing the bulkhead to the deck. will post pics and details to my 33-2 blog
this weekend.

Has anyone use an alternative to 795 for the plexiglass seal?
