I did that and it worked for a while. The ospreys eventually figured out how to
break it ☹
Did I mention all ospreys must die a long and painful death? In case I forgot,
I think they need to be tied up and watch me make an omelet out of osprey eggs
before being staked out in the desert next to an ant hill and covered with
honey.
Not really – but damn if those things cannot make a HUGE mess and they are very
creative at getting around obstacles. The boat one mooring over had a nice new
wind instruments for about 3 days before a big fat osprey landed on them and
broke the mount right off.

I have monofilament lines running from shroud to shroud just above the
spreaders - work really well against cormorants. At the masthead my burger on

Others in my harbor use the nylon spikes.

2014-12-01 Thread Jack Fitzgerald via CnC-List
I used a 200 lbs stainless steel leader wire on the mast head. It runs from
just below the wind sensor unit and to just under the tri-color/anchor
lamp. We added short vertical pieces of the wire from the wind sensor crane
up and pooped around the horizontal wire as well. The Windex has a bird
spike installed. So between the 2 the have managed to keep even the
buzzards and Osprey off the masthead.

My dock neighbors are not so lucky and this fall alone all 6 have lost
their Windexs and suffered damaged to the wind sensors as well.

Stus-List Two paint questions

2014-12-01 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List

Hi David, I'm with Josh on this.

We had ours taken to the gelcoat last spring as well (Apparently the 1st
time ever on my boat..) it had the original old style tar looking barrier
coat stuff which had peeled off in multiple places.. The only sign of a
possible blister was one little pin-prick the size of an eraser head
 despite the multiple bare spots..

My very experienced guy doing the bottom strongly advised against a new
barrier coat. He said: Your boat is still very dry but any moisture
present would be contained by the barrier coat / could possibly create new
problems you obviously don't have at this point. He said that he's tried
it / been pursuaded to do over the decades but finally concluded that
overall, unless it was applied on a brand new boat or one that had been
stored inside for several months, it was a bad idea..

Plus as Josh said, C&C was among the early adopters for blister resistant
gelcoat. Our boat used the Hydrex Isophtalic NPG which is close to a
modern vinylester it its ability to resist blisters / uv rays / oxidation.
You can see more details about the boat's construction here:
 http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/reviews/review34-36.htm or google "Hydrex
 Isophtalic NPG" for more details.

I am not sure where “where
ever” is, but some areas out of the 1st world
are using surveys from 100-200 years ago to make those
 electronic charts.
Recently the US Navy drove a minesweeper onto a reef for
just this reason. Also note the vector chart plotters will
lose major details when zoomed out, including entire
islands. This resulted in a multiple fatality in California
 recently.

 Just because charts are digital
 doesn't mean they are accurate.

Many digital charts are based on
soundings that may literally be hundreds of years old and
 would certainly predate GPS.

I was in Panama this summer and my
Navionics gold charts would have had me drive over a bunch
of reefs if I had let them.   (I used paper charts from
the cruising guide which were spot on)

I'm not sure what the chart
accuracy is in that part of the world,  but if there was
any question of dodgy charts,  the race committee ought to
have given that area a wide berth.   It would have been
simple to set up a waypoint well offshore

 irresponsible,  imo.

I have a 1985 Yanmar 3HMF (1985 C&C 37); the engine has never had these gauges;
I called the tech dept for teleflex; they gave me a Sierra Part number for the

for the water temp gauge they tell me I need to know the thread size for the
engine to know which sending unit to purchase; there are four different units;
(18-5896; TS-1/4-18; TS 3/8-18; TS 1/2-18)
I am not a mechanic and have no idea how to find this information; I do have

I am in need of the lists' collective institutional knowledge; I bought two
teleflex gauges; one for oil pressure, and the other Water temp; I need to
order the sending units;
I have a 1985 Yanmar 3HMF (1985 C&C 37); the engine has never had these
gauges; I called the tech dept for teleflex; they gave me a Sierra Part
number for the oil gauge sender; (18-5899), but
for the water temp gauge they tell me I need to know the thread size for
the engine to know which sending unit to purchase; there are four different
units; (18-5896; TS-1/4-18; TS 3/8-18; TS 1/2-18)
I am not a mechanic and have no idea how to find this information; I do have
all of the Yanmar service manuals and parts manuals; is this information in
the manuals or how can I find this out? Many thanks

I’ve got iNavX and iSailor on my iPad.

I prefer iNavX.

Just got back from 10 days in the BVI’s on a 52ft Benneteau.

Great sailing, especially out on the Atlantic side of Virgin Gorda where the
water drops off to a mile deep - very rough!

iNavX worked perfectly the whole trip.

I suspect most of the maps are based on 200 year old soundings by the British
and Dutch - but we didn’t hit anything.

Re: Stus-List bird spikes

2014-12-01 Thread Alan Bergen via CnC-List

I just ordered spikes from Wal-mart. After two years of being bombarded by
cormorants, it's time to fight back.

Stus-List headroom on C&C 36?

2014-12-01 Thread Lee Youngblood via CnC-List

Hi All,

Anyone know the standing headroom on a C&C 36?

Sailboat data list the design as a 1977, but no info as to how many
they made. I've sailed on one, heavier than the 35-III, similar
interior design, but slower - we didn't have much wind. . .

I sure hope someone can give me a headroom number in the galley,
saloon, and at the mast.

Thanks, Lee
