Re: Stus-List Moisture Content

2013-09-17 Thread Jake Brodersen
Tom,

With a boat that's been out of the water for that long, I doubt there would
be much moisture in the hull. If you haven't found any other deal breakers,
it is probably time to hire a surveyor. A moisture meter will be more
accurate. The last time I had a boat surveyed, the surveyor did most of his
work with a plastic mallet. It is a good tool when in the hands of a
skilled surveyor.

I'm looking at purchasing a 1980 C&C 40 that has been out of the water for
2 seasons maybe 3. As I understand it, this is a cored hull boat and I'm
trying determine the extent of moisture in the hull.

I've read that taping 6 inch square of plastic freezer bag on the hull in
various locations and leaving it for 24 hours and then reviewing to see if
any moisture has condensed on the interior surface of the plastic. Due to
this boat being out of water for this length of time, will this test be
valid? Anyone familiar with sort of test and whether or not this will
provide any meaningful information?

Stus-List Steering cable for a 37+

2013-09-17 Thread Len Mitchell
Edd, It doesn't get easier than a 37+ to replace the cable. Just lift the floor
panel, use a flashlight and a little mirror to see what is involved. It may
take you 1-2 hours the first time to feed the cables. Just imagine how much
more work it would be on a boat with the quadrant under the floor of the
cockpit! Good luck.

Re: Stus-List Replacing Edson pedestal steering cable and chain

2013-09-17 Thread djhaug...@juno.com
I had my Edson steering fail on me last year. The chain part of the
chain/cable wasn't really long enough and whoever installed it did not make
sure the chain was properly centered over the sprocket. So, the rudder went
full over to one side and was fine but, one time it went full over to port and
the chain to wire connector rolled up onto the sprocket. It jammed and when I
tried to free it, it de-railed and I had steering from just shy of midships to
port. There were18 knot winds and 4 - 6 foot seas! I got Tow boat to take me
home but, what an experience! The tow boat guy out of my Marina refused to
come get me because he said conditions at the mouth of the river that lead to
my marina were too bad. They towed me to New Bedford that day and then to my
home port the following day. All the years I've paid for tow boat's unlimited
towing and that was the first time I ever had to call them. well worth the
cost over all those years! At first they wanted to tow me back to Vinyard
Haven and I refused and had them bring me home. Unlimited service guarantees
towing to home port! Get a little extra length on the chain part. I did that
for the replacement. I went straight to Edson as they are just over in New
Bedford and they confirmed it to be a good idea. I figured, with the
chain/cable being properly centered, the extra length of chain was a little
more added security. DannyLolita1973 Viking 33Westport Point, MA

Replacing Edson pedestal steering cable and chain:

Edson has a great website that shows how the cable crosses inside the pedestal
so the rudder goes right when you turn the wheel right.

http://www.edsonmarine.com/support/steering_system_replacement_parts/index.php

Here's what I remember:
Basically, you remove the nuts on the cable tensioning bolts on the quadrant,
rig pull strings for later, slip the cables out of the quadrant.
Then remove the pull strings from the tensioning bolts, remove the saddle
clamps to free the cable.
Mark the orientation of the pedestal compass and remove it from the pedestal.
Tape pull strings on each cable end.
Pull the chain up off the pedestal sprocket, and pull the strings up and
through and keep the oriented port and starboard.
Mark the center of the new chain, sharpie pen, for future.
Match the new cable length using the old one as a template, and mark where to
make the eye with tape, then allow a good length for three clamps and
doublecheck your work, cut excess.
Tape the new cable ends to your pull strings, and fish the cables down through
the pedestal and round the sheaves and then make up the ends; thimbles,
tensioner bolts, saddle clamps.
Center the wheel, and center the new chain on the sprocket using your mark.
Use the pull string to pull the new cables around and thru the quadrant.
Center the quadrant with the wheel centered before tensioning things evenly.
Tension just enough to prevent slippage, but not so much that is strains the
rudder bearings.
Follow Edson advice on website.

Peter,

Congratulations on your purchase.

We sail Whistler II out of Dutchman's Cove in Penetanguishene. She's a
C&C 30 '73 (hull #190). We bought her in 1994 on Lake Simcoe on our
honeymoon , took her down the Trent and sailed out of Toronto until
2008.
I've replaced the head and holding tank, replaced the instruments (they
need replacing again) and done a lot of major/minor repairs and
replacements over the years.

She's gotten a bit smaller with two teenaged boys aboard (my 14 year old
is 6'1" already), but the four of us can survive 5 days aboard without
killing each other.

After 40 years she is finally starting to show her age cosmetically.
Structurally, she is as solid as a tank. Last month we had the rail in
the water in 20 knots with no reef. We've run her aground several times
in Georgian Bay without incident, and it was 5 knots into a rock shelf
that finally created a small C&C smile on the keel.

Stay on top of deck leaks and your boat should hold out for another
decade at least.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Greetings, from a recent purchaser of a 1980 C&C 30, sailing out of
Penetanguishene, Ontario.

Last weekend (July 5-7) I sailed the boat with a buddy to its home port
from Gore Bay, ON, on Manitoulin Island, a trip of roughly 160 nautical
miles. SW winds were not as heavy as we would have liked, but we did get
six hours of great sailing in, averaging 5-6 knots. It was the first
time I've sailed a boat that needed no attention at the helm unless
there was a change in wind strength.

For those who know Georgian Bay, we spent the first night at Club
Island, and the second night at Beckwith Island, east side. From there
Penetang was an easy reach on Sunday morning.

The boat will be used for cruising and overnighting, not so much for
racing. The boat has a Yanmar 2GM diesel, a motor that saw plenty of
action last weekend. It appeared to get very good mileage.

Areas I would like to clear up: batteries and electrical (I don't like
the location of the battery switch under the bulkhead, and don't like
the original DC panel or its location). Any recommendations would be
appreciated.

The head seems to have a case of "gastric reflux" in heavy seas. I want
to get that fixed. Anybody have one of those new composting toilets, and
do they actually work?

Electronics: I have Nexus wind instruments ready to go. I'd like to have
the screens installed on a pod at the helm, with chartplotter, etc.

Motor gauges: located in a spot anyone over a foot tall can't see. Can
this be improved?

Refrigeration: looking at options for shore power cooling.

I love these projects, and expect to have a few things done by next
spring. In the meantime I will sail it as much as I can this year to
understand how the boat responds in different wind/wave conditions.

As an aside, my experience with these types of forums/lists has been
mainly with the long distance motorcycling community. They are ruthless
when people respond without trimming excess paragraphs from the post.
You guys/gals are much more polite.

Hope to meet many of you on the water. My sailing goal is to make it up
to Mackinac in the next year or two, then who knows from there.

Good on ýa. When folks look at my foredeck and call it skinny I prefer
to say that I have a ´fine entry.´

Which reminds me of a funny moment sailing into San Diego in 2009. It
was one of those days when the California fog hit big time. Visibility
was about 30 feet, and I kept turning to starboard to avoid a collision
but finally realized that I was reacting to my own running lights
reflected back off the fog. San Diego harbor is a maze, and was tough to
navigate blind. I was doing fine until I encountered a huge white light
in the middle of the channel. I sat there for 30 minutes trying to
figure it out (note that I'd been single handing for 18 hours through
shipping channels.) I didn't want to use the radio, since CH16 was
flooded with lost power boaters calling the Coast Guard, and the
Coasties were laughing on the radio. ("So, you're tied up to a buoy but
don't know the buoy number? Dawn is only six hours away...") I learned
later that the big white light was illuminating a sign pointing toward a
fuel dock, but with 30 foot visibility I didn't know that and really
didn't want to get close to the big white light. Eventually I worked
past the big white light and ended up in the wrong marina. I saw an
empty slip. I nailed it perfectly. No fenders, no bumps. The next
morning I looked around and realized I had about four inches of
clearance on both sides of the boat. There was a crowd staring at my
boat. I said 'nice to meet you, gotta go...'

Stus-List 35/3 racing questions

2013-09-17 Thread Joel Aronson
For those of you with a second genoa track along the cabin, at what wind
speed do you move to the inner track and back? The boat seems to point
better using the inner track, but the slot seems narrower.

At what wind speed do you go from the 1/2 ounce chute to the 3/4 ounce
chute?

Forecast is for 8-10. Am I on the border line for both?

I don't have an inner track, but would be running with the 0.5oz in 10
knots true (about 6 knots / 120 degrees apparent); tight reaching with the
0.75oz. About 12/14 knots TWS *running* is when I'd switch.

Re: Stus-List 35/3 racing questions

2013-09-17 Thread Jake Brodersen
Joel,

I use the inner tracks up to about 12 kts true wind. After that, I move to
the outer tracks and control the amount of wind that is spilled by moving
the car aft a bit.

For my 20 year old spinnakers, ½ oz. in ten knots or less. Everything else
gets the ¾ oz.

I’d run the inner tracks and the light chute!

On my 35-1, I carry my 0.6 oz to about 10 true, the 3/4 to ~16 true and the 1.5
until all the crew has white knuckles (usually around 20-22 true).  :)

Our biggest rule when carrying in 15+ is "never let the center seam in the
bottom panel cross to windward of the forestay".

Re: Stus-List C&C 29 Hull

Yes, don’t ask me how I know… if you look in the right places, say in the
hanging locker, just above waterline you’ll find a horizontal bump line to the
inside. That’s where the coring starts for the topsides of the hull on our ’86
29-II. Below waterline is solid.

The Mk1 brochure on the "Photoalbum" says it had a cored hull.

I don't have any first hand knowledge, just quoting from the original C&C
brochure.

To the best of my knowledge, all 29’s (mark 1 & 2) are solid glass hulls.

For sure my Mark 2 (1985) is a solid glass hull.

Good rule.  The rock and roll becomes a broach pretty quick from my experience
