Stus-List Weeping ball valves

2013-03-08 Thread Tom Buscaglia
We are having a little salt water intrusion on two of the ball valves
on Alera. (1/2 cup or so in the relative bilge compartments). I
suspect the valves may just need greasing or possible replacement. I
am having her hauled in a few weeks to check out and clean the bottom
paint, replace the zincs and grease the Maxprop (I don't think the PO
did that when he out her up and I neglected it last year when re
re-commissioned her in February). So, I can deal with them then.

Anyone have a similar issue with ball valves and what is the
recommended maintenance on them?

Hi Tom,

As you have a 37/40 I'll assume all your Seacocks are Forespar Marelon
Flange Mounting Seacocks (ours are) so here is a quote from their website:

"QUICK NOTE ON MAINTENANCE
New valves come greased. Valves that have been sitting on store shelves
for a long time may need more and have the handle/ball exercised. Use any
non-petroleum grease (Lithium, Silicones, etc) and no aerosols! Use a soda
straw to get the grease through elbows and tailpipes and USE THE VALVES
regularly to avoid marine growth from building up and seizing them. The
more you use them the less you have to maintain them!"

>From here (scroll down a bit and hit the "Installation/Maintenance" tab):

My C&C 25 came with a rope and plastic ladder. For whatever reason, everyone
found it difficult to use, I think because it would curl back under the hull
and didn’t provide firm footing. I changed to a stainless steel ladder fairly

I'm not convinced a boarding ladder would have helped that dude. If you're
going from a dinghy to a pitching boat, do it amidships, time your "leap"
for when the boat rolls toward you, grab a stanchion in both hands, and
then don't let go!

A ladder for him probably would have only complicated matters.

Yeah, I know it's harder than it looks, and I also know it's easy to be an
armchair captain, but I do have a fair bit of experience getting aboard big
boats that are bouncing around.

Re: Stus-List A convincing case in favor of boarding ladders

2013-03-08 Thread Steve Thomas
Plastimo makes an emergency boarding ladder that you can tie to the toe rail.
It stores in a bag that is velcroed shut, with a
loop at the bottom that releases the ladder when you grab it. Not as easy to
climb as a steel ladder but more appropriate
amidships. I have one but I should have bought two. Haven't actually tried to
board with it yet.

I also saw once on Ebay a steel ladder that formed a lifeline gate when not
deployed. I don't remember who made it or how it was
deployed, but idea makes a lot of sense if it actually works.

Stus-List C&C30 mast step (and C&C24 for sale)

2013-03-08 Thread Paul Baker

Hi Folks,
I had a look at a C&C30 the other day, the mast step is of mild
concern. I thought I read that C&C replaced the wood with aluminium
fairly early in the production to prevent it rotting through. The mast
step appears to be a woody on this one, I am guessing this looks like a
rotter, or is this just a cosmetic piece? Or is the step underneath and
is fine? The boat is a 1976.

Paul. That looks like it needs to be replaced. It is exactly like the one in

should drain into the bilge. The stringer below may be weak also. Have a
good survey before you buy. Just lower the price for the repair.

Re: Stus-List C&C30 mast step (and C&C24 for sale)

2013-03-08 Thread Paul Baker
Thanks Joe, I think the wood still felt solid, the mast boot has failed
which is why there is so much water in there (plus it's in Vancouver,
and it rains, a lot). Seems that replacement is more of a pain and messy
job than particularly difficult, plus the expense of pulling the mast.
Of main concern would be that should I end up buying this one, I will
have to get her back over the Strait, doing that on a new boat, with an
unknown engine, unknown rigging, unknown systems and an owner who's
never sailed across it before should be an interesting adventure :-)

Cheers,
Paul.

Paul. That looks like it needs to be replaced. It is exactly like the one in
my 1979 era C&C 30. Being full of water is not good either , That water
should drain into the bilge. The stringer below may be weak also. Have a
good survey before you buy. Just lower the price for the repair.

Hi Folks,
I had a look at a C&C30 the other day, the mast step is of mild concern. I
thought I read that C&C replaced the wood with aluminium fairly early in the
production to prevent it rotting through. The mast step appears to be a
woody on this one, I am guessing this looks like a rotter, or is this just a
cosmetic piece? Or is the step underneath and is fine? The boat is a 1976.

Any advice welcome.

PS. Anyone want to buy a nice C&C24?

Ron, I'm up in Sidney, BC, if STL in your signature is Seattle, then not
far. If it's St. Louis, then that's a little further to go!
Ad is here if anyone is interested (or knows someone that wants a great
little boat):

Where are you located? My wife wants to step down to a smaller boat?

Re: Stus-List A convincing case in favor of boarding ladders

2013-03-08 Thread Russ & Melody
I'm with you Colin. Amidships with timing or for
chickens, at the stern where the relative water
level remains remarkably constant on a well designed boat.

It looks to me like the biggest problem here was
poor boatmanship. One of the things a d'flatable
does really well is to act like a tug boat. Push
the bow into the topsides amidships and give the
lad a stable platform for two seconds so he can
leap & glory, especially if timed with contact at
the trough.. Don't bring the rubber duck alongside in that crap.

At least the water is warm.

I'm not convinced a boarding ladder would have
helped that dude. If you're going from a dinghy

A ladder for him probably would have only complicated matters.

Yeah, I know it's harder than it looks, and I
also know it's easy to be an armchair captain,
but I do have a fair bit of experience getting
aboard big boats that are bouncing around.

Does anyone have any plans that could be used to
build a boarding ladder out of

wood or rope and wood? This has been on my project list for quite a while.
