If you're going from a dinghy to a pitching boat, do it amidships, time your "leap" for when the boat rolls toward you, grab a stanchion in both hands, and then don't let go! A ladder for him probably would have only complicated matters. Yeah, I know it's harder than it looks, and I also know it's easy to be an armchair captain, but I do have a fair bit of experience getting aboard big boats that are bouncing around.
