The good commercial AV typically have daily pattern updates, and monthly
engine updates. That corresponds just about right to ClamAV. The
*engines* need updating as new types of viruses *which have to be coded
for* emerge. You are probably asking for the impossible.

However... We also use Trend here, and I haven't touched the engine
(i.e. the binary and libraries) for over a year - and yet it's current
(i.e. todays) patterns still work and it still appears to catch
everything the Windows version does (of course - it misses a LOT that
ClamAV catches...) Sounds like they have pushed a lot of what other
vendors put into their engines into their patterns I'd guess...

[Clamav-users] Please help

2005-02-15 Thread Harald Villemoes
I have a loop problem after upgrading clamav (through clamwin) from 0.6x
til 0.82 and 0.83.
The problem is, that certain low frequency mail files with the virus:
Worm.SomeFool.Gen-1 causes the clamscan program to loop infinitely.

I have a sample mail file, that causes the problem. I have run this with
debug output and sent the whole lot to this list, but the message is
hanging in a moderator queue due to size.
I then tried to upload the mail file to the virus file input page, but
there it was rejected, because it was already a known virus (which is
quite right).

So how do I report a reproducable problem in clamav including test output
and test data ?

And a fix or work-around the problem would be appreciated too, as I
presently have to kill a looping clamscan probess a couple of times each
day.

Thank you in advance

Best regards

  Harald Villemoes

Zip the email with password "virus" and e-mail it as an attachment directly to

Upload the sample as a false positive, and put the above in the notes

[Clamav-users] little tool for detecting & reanimate hanged Clamd

Hello, clamav-users.

May be useful for someone... Little tool ClamdMon on clear C for Linux.
It works fine for me on my busy production servers, which used
ClamAV daemon clamd.

It's an alternative for clamdwatch, written on Perl from contrib. But
none temp files for scanning is created. ClamdMon use the STREAM
service for test scan.

This is not true. Only versions <= 0.60 are no longer usable since they
do not support the new database container format. All versions >= 0.65
can be updated, they will however not be able to take advantage of new
extensions and signature formats. With versions older than 0.80 you can
miss up to a few thousands of malware.

Some vendors' scanners have a scriptable scan engine AFAIK. And most
vendors only have to support precompiled binaries on the win32 platform,
so they can provide _one_ updated scan engine binary. This just doesn't
work with ClamAV, distributed in source form and being compiled on x
platforms and (in part optionally) relying on a bunch of 3rd party
libraries.

Re: AW: [Clamav-users] not updating clam

2005-02-15 Thread Ted Fines
Hi,
It is not automatically updating because to update, this needs to happen:
1. download source
2. ./configure --with-your-specific-options
3. make
4. stop clam daemon
5. Maybe stop or pause other programs, like amavisd or your mail server
6. make install
7. Start everything back up.
8. See if it works. If not, backgrade, or rebuild & try again.
In short, its just too much to do automagically, unless you want to put in
a lot of work to try and automate all that.

How about this? Have a script monitor your clamd.log file, looking for the
"WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED" message, and email you when
it pops up again. Then you'll know its time to update clam. That would be
easy.

Simply rely on your distribution package repositories and your local

reliable and up-to-date repositories for some distributions can be
painful (RH8 comes to my mind).

Re: [Clamav-users] Re: not updating clam

2005-02-15 Thread Hanford, Seth
I can do that, but please tell me why it is not automatically
updating. Because this problem might occurs in future also when new
version releases.
Perhaps you're confused? Clam is updating virus database files, but NOT
updating the actual program binaries. This log message is there to let
you know that your binaries are not the latest version.

This is NOT a message that is logged when new virus definitions are not
being downloaded.

Unless you require functionality that is needed in a newer version, you
do not have to update immediately to 0.83. However, newer versions are
capable of catching more types of viruses, and so you may need this
functionality without immediately recognizing it.

Hope this clarifies,
Seth

This appears to be a common misconception, that's perhaps carried over
from the world of Windows.
I've been using Linux since '99' and I even asked this question the
first time I saw the listing in the update log.

I'm not big on making suggestions, especially in a situation where the
development team appears to have everything under control. But perhaps
it might be a good idea to include a little behind the scenes tutorial
about what happens when a update notification occurs and what specific
messages that may be found in the log files mean.

Granted the above is rather simple to figure out, and out of 100 users
perhaps 2 will actually read the darn thing but if it lowers the number
of these type of questions sent to the support teams email, or various
support lists wouldn't it be worth it?

As I said just a thought.
Keep up the great work guys!!

freshclam doesn't update the program files, only the virus pattern files
>
> So, I want it to automatically update clam.

use an rpm based distribution with a tool like urpmi/up2date/redcarpet
with a maintainer who will provide binaries for your platform, and
enable automatic RPM updating. On Mandrake you can make a cron job that
says:
urpmi.update update_source
urpmi --update --auto-select --force

If you didn't want all of the other mandrake updates, it would be easy
enough to build:

urpmi.update update_source
urpmi --update clamd --force

or even:
urpmi.addmedia -f clam ftp://ftp.neocat.com/pub/RPMS/10.1/

then:
urpmi.update -f clam
urpmi --media clam --auto-select --force

But Bill hasn't been maintaining his RPM archive since Mandrake put
clamav in the main distribution.

I personally would not recommend automatic binary updates, but it can be
done.

I maintain test and production servers, and generally build an rpm for
every version and RC (unless Oden from Mandrake is quicker, then I use
his.) My test server gets upgraded relatively quickly, and when I am
satisfied that it is stable, I upgrade production.

You installed 0.81 and 0.82 automagically installed? Which package
update tool are you using?

Unless, of course, you are using Mandrake's URPMI, but they never
released an 0.82, so that can't be it.

database updates of course are done all of the time.

if you stick to the same method eg compile from source then it will just
replace old binaries with new ones. No need to uninstall first, this is only
necessary if you are messing with different sources, precompiled RPM etc

Your .conf files will remain untouched

write a script install_clamav and put your commands in there, then next time
you only have to edit the version number.

I imagine you have old libraries from .80 left over when you upgrade, or
you didn't edit /etc/clamd.conf after the upgrade...

But, give us some more details: platform you are running on (uname -a is
often helpful), and method of upgrade (source, RPM, ?)

[Clamav-users] Broken zlib version?

2005-02-15 Thread Tarjei Knapstad
I've got a mail server here running RH8 (yes, yes I know... :)), and
when trying to build clamav 0.83 RPMs it required zlib 1.2.1.2.

OK, downloaded the FC3 zlib SRPM, built and installed just fine.

However, during configure I get this:

WARNING: ** This ClamAV installation may be linked against
WARNING: ** a broken zlib version. Please DO NOT report any
WARNING: ** stability problems to the ClamAV developers!

I've checked that there's no other libz around than the newly installed
1.2.1.2 and that the binaries are dynamically linked against this
version (/usr/lib/libz.so.1 which is a link to
/usr/lib/libz.so.1.2.1.2).

Is this anything I should worry about or a bug in the configure script?
(and if so, what kind of stability problems should I be on the lookout
for?)

Thanks,
--
Tarjei

Re: AW: [Clamav-users] Re: not updating clam

2005-02-15 Thread clamav

I'm not big on making suggestions, especially in a situation where the
development team appears to have everything under control. But perhaps it
might be a good idea to include a little behind the scenes tutorial about
what happens when a update notification occurs and what specific messages
that may be found in the log files mean.

Granted the above is rather simple to figure out, and out of 100 users
perhaps 2 will actually read the darn thing but if it lowers the number of
these type of questions sent to the support teams email, or various
support lists wouldn't it be worth it?
easier:
change the text from:
WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED - please update immediately!
WARNING: Local version: 0.81 Recommended version: 0.82
to
WARNING: A new version of the ClamAV program is available! Your version: 0.82
WARNING: New version available for download: 0.83 See
http://www.clamav.net for details.

or something like that. greater clarity in the warning message will go a
long way to clearing this up. 'update' is easily misunderstood to mean
virus definition updates.

I found that FC3 zlib-1.2.2.2 src rpms rebuilt and installed fine on
RH9, so RH8 may well work quite happily too.

[Clamav-users] Compile problem

2005-02-15 Thread D.J.
Hello all. I'm currently running a Qmail server on OpenBSD 3.4 that
I'd like to hook ClamAV into. Problem is, I'm running into a problem
when I do a make. Before it fails with at the end of the attempted
make, I receive the following lines:

/usr/local/src/clamav-0.83/libclamav/message.c:639: undefined
reference to `pthread_mutex_lock'
/usr/local/src/clamav-0.83/libclamav/message.c:661: undefined
reference to `pthread_mutex_unlock'
/usr/local/src/clamav-0.83/libclamav/message.c:655: undefined
reference to `pthread_mutex_unlock'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/local/src/clamav-0.83/clamscan (line 294 of Makefile).
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/local/src/clamav-0.83 (line 354 of Makefile).
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/local/src/clamav-0.83 (line 219 of Makefile).

There are SEVERAL similar lines to the first three before it. Further
up, I also have this curious little message:

*** Warning: linker path does not have real file for library -lbz2.
*** I have the capability to make that library automatically link in when
*** you link to this library. But I can only do this if you have a
*** shared version of the library, which you do not appear to have
*** because I did check the linker path looking for a file starting
*** with libbz2 and none of the candidates passed a file format test
*** using a file magic. Last file checked: /usr/lib/libbz2.a

*** or is declared to -dlopen it.

*** Since this library must not contain undefined symbols,
*** because either the platform does not support them or
*** it was explicitly requested with -no-undefined,
*** libtool will only create a static version of it.

I sense this has something to do with it due to the "undefined
reference" messages at the end of the make. Can someone point me in
the right direction? Thanks in advance!

it doesn't look like Blackhole has been updated in a long time. Does
Clamdscan or clamscan work? If so, then you might have to rebuild
blackhole.

It means you have a wrong sendmail configuration and probably a full

As already pointed out, it has nothing to do with clamav, but the
SYSERR(clamav) part means you are running sendmail as user clamav...
which is probably not what you wanted to do.

Running sendmail -t -i -odq or sendmail -t -i. (I have no idea what

by the way

My aliases.db is "-rw-r- 1 root smmsp" so if sendmail has the

Perhaps you could try the clamav-milter daemon without the --force-scan

Okay, you sound like you have two (2) problems here. did you,in fact,
edit the example config file /etc/freshclam.conf and clamd.conf like the
error said? what are the contents of those two files.

second problem...in the webmin module config, you have to tell it the
config files are at /etc/clamd.conf, etc.

Or webmin nuked your config files...you DID save a copy before letting
webmin loose on them, right?

My guess is he can't figure out how to subscribe to the mailing list,

[Clamav-users] No announcement of 0.83 on clamav-announce ML

2005-02-15 Thread Hal Goldfarb

I subscribed to the clamav-announce mailing list just yesterday. I guess that
was too late to be informed of 0.83. However, I checked the archive for the
clamav-announce list and there does not seem to be any mention of 0.83 there
either. Or do I need to adjust my monitor, change browsers, or get
eyeglasses?

I am trying to play by the rules, honest. Can you instruct me on how to
properly be informed of clamav code updates? I also think RPM binaries
should be made available before an official release. There are probably a
lot of people out there who are not CVS and/or build savvy, but want to
support you all in your efforts to provide the world with a free and open
anti-virus tool.

Just my two bits.

Thanks

Maybe - it's in my clamav-announce mailbox, at least. Try:

The ClamAV does not make the rpm's. The way open source development
usually works is that the source version is released first, and then
binary packagers grab the source and build rpm's, deb's or whatever from
the source. There is no realistic way for the clam developers to know
who each and every person making a binary package out of their source is,
so that they can coordinate a release.

The system in place works fine, and if you have decent packagers, just
wait until they release a new package version. It is the simplest, and
it load shares nicely. If you absolutely must have the latest version
the second it comes out, I suggest learning CVS and the build tools,
or paying someone to stay on top of it for you. I am not trying to be
mean, you understand, I am just trying to explain that there is already a
system in place that works well. If it does not meet your expectations,
you have to adjust either your expectations or your toolset.

[Clamav-users] Unable to install clamav from source or ports on openBSD 3.6

2005-02-15 Thread Joseph Filla
I'm running openBSD 3.6 and cannot for the life of me
install clamav. I've tried the ports (via cvsup) but
run into gmp install errors (I can't figure that out)
so I've moved to compiling from source. I've tried to
compile .82 and .83 and after running 'configure' I
try runing make.

However I get a "make: no target to make."

There is no Makefile in either the 0.82 or 0.83
tarballs. There's a Makefile.in and a Makefile.am but
no Makefile. I don't know why this is so hard on
openBSD. Anyway, any tips or instructions or binaries
for a openBSD 3.6 would be *greatly* appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe F.

Piggy-backing:

Maybe they could stick a broom up their bum and sweep the floor at the
same time, too. Dayum, guy - this stuff is free. Get off your butt and
build your own binaries - hell, it takes maybe 10 minutes, is repeatable,
and you get all the credit.

Don't even suggest they put my Solaris source builds in limbo until all
the weenies have their little rpm's all bundled up, ribboned, bowed, and
ready for a point and click install. This is not rocket science - rocket
science is loud and makes smoke trails. Y'all are giving Unix a bad name.
