[Bacula-users] Problem with restore

2005-04-25 Thread Ogee
Hi,
I'm new to the list, but I use bacula for a while. Such a good piece
of software. ;-)

I have today a problem with restore a file from backup.

I use bacula 1.36.2 and backup only to files, every two weeks I mark
file to be archived and create new backup file.

It is possible to get file unless error above?
   Thanks for your hints.

Re: [Bacula-users] Problem with restore

2005-04-25 Thread Ogee
Try starting the Storage daemon with a -p option. It will then ignore certain
errors -- however, when you are getting checksum errors, something has gone
wrong and the SD will most likely either give up or crash.
I try so, but the same error again. Unfortunately, I can't restore any
file, because that checksum error. If I set -p to SD, it crashed anyway. :-(

Is there any way to recover file or prevent this situation. It is first
time, I need backup and I cannot get it.

   Thanks in advance for advice.

[Bacula-users] Repair bad file

[Bacula-users] Bad story

2005-05-16 Thread Ogee
Hello,
I would like to say, that I am very disappointed with bacula. The
design is very nice, configuration si simple and clear, management is
also good... BUT I would like to get backup from backup file for second
time and for the second time I get (from different backup file) checksum
error, it means that I can't use bacula, because it is not suitable for
production nor normal use, maybe experimental.

I am sorry about that, but it is not possible to use it, if it
cannot give me backup files anyway.

Hope, you are more lucky with using bacula!
--ogee
PS: I use bacula 1.36.(2|3) with PostgreSQL and store files to disk.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bad story

2005-05-16 Thread Ogee
What on earth are you rambling about? Bacula is great, and covers all the typical (and more!) needs in a production enviroment! Bacula is, in my opinion, at this date the premiere solution for doing backups.
I had thought so, but not know, because of problems, I have!
One question to you Ogee:
What does "BUT I would like to get backup from backup file for second time
and for the second time I get (from different backup file) checksum error" mean? I
have difficulties understanding what you are trying to convey.
It means that I used to backup my filesystem with bacula for sometime
and one day somebody need to restore some file, I would do that, but I
can't because checksum error on backup file, next time (last Saturday) I
wanted to restore somefile again (it was differnet backup file) and the
same problem, so what can I do with perfect program like Bacula if I
can't restore any file...

Re: [Bacula-users] Bad story

Andrew Paterson wrote:
Hi Ogee,
you say you are getting checksum errors.
Anyway, you should still have a file restored - but it will possibly be corrupt just as it would be if you were using another backup system.
Sorry, you're not right, because I CAN'T RESTORE file and it means, that
I can't get/restore file from backup volume (file on disk in my case). I
agree, that if file is being changed when backuping, that it would cause
problems, the file I wanted to restore could not be changed, because it
was file created by skript before backup (database dump), so nobody and
nothing could write to it (possible yes, but no).

This is YOUR problem not a problem with bacula (or any other backup system come to that).
No, my problem is that I CANT'T RESTORE file from backup volume.
If as I suspect this all means nothing to you, then I also suggest you pay someone to set up a working backup system for you.
Maybe I should, but it's my job. ;-)

Re: [Bacula-users] Bad story

2005-05-16 Thread Ogee
Still, the version information is not really precise...
When I had had the first trouble I'd been using 1.36.2, so I upgrade to
1.36.3, it means my 2nd problem was with version 1.36.3.

Ok, so we have to assume then that there is no possibility of problems
with the file system or disk drives... still, I'd recommend a close look
to the system's log and do a file system check. Just to be sure.
Nothing bad happened.
Ok, now I understand :-)
Have you tried bls and bextract on the volume file?
No.
Have you tried other volume files, or other files to restore?
Yes. Same problem.
After all, this was only one file you tried to restore and it is some
time ago.

Yes, it is, but it was the first time trouble and 2nd has been the same,
but with different backup file (volume I mean).

Has this volume file ever been "moved around", e.g. put on DVD, deleted
from disk, later been copied back? This is, from my experience, one of
the best ways to break your backups - with DVDs you *always* should
expect data errors.
No, this volume was not copied, move or anything else.
Where's that traceback from?
bacula-sd
I rather thought about starting the sd with debug outbut, something like
bacula-dir -d 100 -c /etc/bacula/bacula-sd >>
/var/log/bacula-sd-debug.txt so you can verify the process of the restore.
Answer above.

Now, I assume that you did some test restores when you set up bacula (or
is this still the test?) and those worked. Have you changed anything in
Yes, you right.
between? Bacula versions, sd configuration, operating system, file
systems, hard disks - anything? Because, apart from the problem of
Yes, I've changed bacula version from 1.36.2 to 1.36.3 after first
trouble. But nothing else.

bacula aborting a restore when it encounters a checksum error, you
really need to find out where that comes from.
I would like to.
From personal knowledge as well as considering the missing error
reports I assume that this is not a problem created by bacula screwing
up the data, but rather the result of data errors at a level "below"
bacula.
Hmm, as of one email above, where Andrew Paterson thinks I am absolutely
stupid :-( talked about problem with file changed during backuping. I
thought about that in different manner... It is possible if some file
changed during backuping, that it would cause checksum error on whole
backup file (volume?) if so, there is no way to backup when system is
used and it is my suggestion from backup soft. I can't reboot to single
user modes and do backup every day. ;-)

Thanks to talking about that. I would like to find solution, if some
exists.
