Cheaper, more convenient, and you get a much better selection of cars. Have
rented a Tesla, a Porsche, and several Mercedes for the same prices that I
would have paid for a Ford Escape. Best one was a BMW convertible to drive
Pacific Coast Highway.

take some pics, get the keys and off you go. I always buy the supplemental
insurance just to be safe but it is pretty cheap. I've had great cars, a Porche
Cayenne, BMW X5, and a Ram 1500, all with no problems whatsoever, and at
cheaper prices than a mid-sized rental car. Beats standing in line at the
rental counter or having to ride some bus to a rental car lot and then standing

I suspect a lot of the streaming services lose money. If you're AT&T or Disney

Serverplus can do sales calls but it's more about them just reading pricing
info off your site, they aren't trained to "Sell" like we would in our local
office with passion and being able to explain why customers should choose us.
So while they can provide sales info don't expect them to sell to your customer
which is why we like to keep that in house.

I do MDUs, hotels, and large residential (5000+ feet) with Unifi.

For MDUs, I set a native/default VLAN on all switch ports with no DHCP/IP and
no routing. I then selectively enable ports for devices and tenants. All
hardware is on a "device only" management VLAN for the Unifi equipment to talk
with itself and firewall rules to only allow inter-device communication and
with the Unifi controller. Each tenant gets their own VLAN (no inter-VLAN
routing). WiFi is an open guest network in the common areas with managed
DNS/click-through authentication. Port isolation is enabled on the aggregation
switches to each cascaded switch, and to each AP to limit broadcast domains.

The hotel setup is similar, with VoIP phones in the mix on dedicated "Guest +
Tagged VoIP VLANs" for all Ethernet ports and dedicated staff WiFi/VLAN
networks. 802.1x is coming to these networks soon to provide device
authentication for the managed/corporate devices.

Firmware updates are tested in the lab, then in a trial network, then scheduled
for deployment during a maintenance window. APs are scheduled for upgrade
first, and then switches get upgraded 30 minutes later. MDUs happen overnight.
Hotels happen during the day, at off-peak hours (like 11AM Wednesday) , while
staffed, in case there's a guest emergency.

several options on the market, but AmpliFi is supposed to work with
Ubiquiti's UNMS software. Something centrally managed like that might
be very attractive to me. I like the idea that when they all need a
firmware update I just click a button and they all get updated.

would be nice if you did something like that

Re: [AFMUG] support for customer IoT

2018-12-20 Thread Layne Sisk
We get those types of calls all the time, some of our ISPs want us to just
support them and some don't. For those that do we have developed a LAN
specialist team that helps them with those issues. We make it clear to the
customer that the issue is not with their ISP, but that we will still help
them. If you have a managed router it does make this much easier.

I got my first support request today for a customer hooking up a robot vacuum.
I guess people need to check remotely during the day to see how the vacuuming
is going? Or the vacuum wants to watch Netflix? Anyway, vacuum company
support is telling him it's a firewall problem. Of course, it's always your
ISP is blocking it. I'm guessing he hasn't even gotten it to connect to his
WiFi.

Anyway, what do you guys do as far as support for smart vacuums, toasters,
light bulbs, etc.? I can see this getting out of hand real quick, as people
buy dozens of little Internet connected appliances, and want to call their ISP
each time. A lot of these may be $25 impulse buys, so I doubt we could make it
into a revenue source even if we wanted to. Maybe you could charge a flat rate
per month for IoT support, but it still seems like a money losing proposition
if it takes off, unless you can outsource it to India.

Re: [AFMUG] customer messaging alternatives to FB

2019-03-14 Thread Layne Sisk
We provide end user support via FB, but we have developed videos explaining how
to do troubleshooting and how to do certain things and we send those videos out
in addition to potentially follow up directly with the customer via phone call
if needed. The usage of FB has exploded since we have done this.

Subject: [AFMUG] customer messaging alternatives to FB

Since Zuckerberg's blog post about the future of messaging on Facebook, there
has been a lot of discussion about how young people especially dislike the
public post approach of social media platforms like Facebook and prefer
alternatives like Snapchat and WeChat.

Occasionally we get customers sending us a PM on Facebook, trying to use it
like tech support chat. We find it to be very inefficient, and try to get them
to email us or call, but most of the time they just engage in a series of
back-and-forth Facebook messages. This morning we got a message "I have a
question, can you help?" I don't know, what's the question?

Unfortunately, Facebook seems to be the only social media app or platform
widely used by our not-so-young not-so-savvy customer base. At least as far as
we know. Maybe they are going crazy on Snapchat, Instagram, Slack, WeChat,
Twitter, or some other platform we don't use.

Are you folks finding something other than Facebook for your customers to
contact you with private messages? Maybe not a public platform at all but some
kind of chat feature on your website? But chat needs 24x7 staffing and that
means outsourcing or a chatbot, not sure I want to do that. We do have a
"contact us" form on the mobile version of our website, and sometimes people do
use that, but that only works if they answer their phone and/or check their
email.

We use Hologram quite a bit. Buying the SIM is one thing, activating it is
another. If you haven't logged into the Hologram portal yet and setup your SIM
you should. Make sure you name it apporpriately so you know which one you are
fiddling with. Once that is done you should be able to just plug it into
anything that supports that kind of SIM and go to town.

If you just need occasional or out of band access I have found none better. You

If your modem supports it, it will connect to almost any carrier in the world.
