[AFMUG] Cambium Webinar tomorrow

2020-03-17 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account)
I just registered for the cambium "Animal Farm" webinar, however it's at 8
central which is 7am my time.

Does anyone know if they record these for later playback? I'm not
particularly thrilled about getting up that early, considering I've been on
the "go to bed at 4am" schedule recently.

We've called it Animal Farm since it was held at the Utah State Fairpark... you

In any case, we've virtualized it this year. As such, we'll record it and post

Why am I thinking a lot of people are like Barney Fife. They should be allowed
one bullet, and should be required to keep it in their shirt pocket until Andy
says they can put it in the gun. Not bad people, but as you say "may exhibit
poor behavior". No scenario I can think of requires thousands of rounds of
ammunition, unless they intend on going to the gun range to shoot targets
because the movie theaters are closed. Or maybe they are going to hunt meat

Statistically, you'll never need to fire your gun and if you do it will
usually be 3 rounds or less. A lot of people buy guns, load them, put
them on the night stand and think they've got everything figured out.

Humans under stress may exhibit poor behavior. Seen it when the
Susquehanna River flooded in 2006 and 2011. Copper thieves and other
bad elements went through whole streets of empty houses and did whatever
they wanted.

"Humans under stress may exhibit poor behavior" should be a warning

Re: [AFMUG] [ External ] Re: Cambium Webinar tomorrow

2020-03-17 Thread chuck
It was first held at the Airport Hilton, it was called AnimalFarm and that
suggestion came from Jaime. It was later held at several other venues. It
was only the latter days where it was held at the fairpark.

Motorola expressly and specifically disavowed any connection with AnimalFarm
but they did send people. I tried to get Mot to sponsor a users group
meeting during the Tucson channel partner meetings and Mot said legally
there were too many problems.

So, I took it upon myself to rent the conference room and invite everyone to
come. We were the pigs taking over the farm from the farmer. Thus
AnimalFarm. And thus trademarked by WB Manufacturing as it was our trade
show and our main means of marketing each year.

But not the first time I have been knocked off by Mot and its descendants...
At least WispAmerica asked permission...

We've called it Animal Farm since it was held at the Utah State Fairpark...
you used to join us and speak about the history, etc. I miss that.

In any case, we've virtualized it this year. As such, we'll record it and
post it to our forum.

If you'd like to attend, please visit our website to see what we're doing to

Statistically, you'll never need to fire your gun and if you do it will
usually be 3 rounds or less. A lot of people buy guns, load them, put
them on the night stand and think they've got everything figured out.

they are going to hunt meat for dinner, but the only game available is

2020-03-17 Thread Bill Prince
When I think about the few times I have gone deer hunting; a few times
with a rifle, and a few times with a bow. The times I've gone with a
rifle, I have shot one, and occasionally two rounds. The times that I've
gone with a bow, I've shot several arrows. Now maybe I'm just a lousy
shot with a bow, but OTOH a quiver only holds 5 or 6 arrows, but it has
always been enough.

That is definitely a consideration when deciding whether or not to get a

Statistically, you'll never need to fire your gun and if you do it will
usually be 3 rounds or less. A lot of people buy guns, load them, put
them on the night stand and think they've got everything figured out.

Ken Hohhof wrote:
Why am I thinking a lot of people are like Barney Fife. They should
be allowed one bullet, and should be required to keep it in their
shirt pocket until Andy says they can put it in the gun. Not bad
people, but as you say "may exhibit poor behavior". No scenario I
can think of requires thousands of rounds of ammunition, unless they
intend on going to the gun range to shoot targets because the movie
theaters are closed. Or maybe they are going to hunt meat for
dinner, but the only game available is incredibly small, like
crickets or mice.

[AFMUG] Equipment Supply Chains

2020-03-17 Thread Kurt Fankhauser
Yesterday on the US Telecom conference call in which there was over 150
called in there was a mention of cargo ships lined up at ports on the west
coast that were not getting unloaded. Is this actually happening? What does
this mean for the next 3 months supply chain? I could see situations where
even if we can get radios, cpes, we won't be able to do installs because of
things like outdoor CAT5e cable and RJ45 crimp connectors are scarce. What
about Cambium PMP450 radios? Those are made in Mexico right? What if the
virus hits mexico bad enough that they have to shut down factories? I'm
worried about all this.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Aintcha glad

2020-03-17 Thread Trey Scarborough
I think it is just compounded because its an election year and it being
one of the big topics for debate. There is always a hording of firearms
with the fear of the next wave of politicians changing.  I just think
the Covid-19 just triggered it early because it is another very
politically charged subject.

I already wanted to open up a gun store this year, but now with the
stupid virus I think it I would have needed to be much farther along
than I am now.

Also unfortunately for My family my wife runs a trade show bushiness so
I think that is worse than a restaurant, hotel or airline

Re: [AFMUG] Equipment Supply Chains

2020-03-17 Thread Adam Moffett
I read an article saying that major ports were implementing a 14 day
quarantine on arriving ships.  Not that they're stuck forever, but
queuing up for 2 weeks.

I haven't read that specifically about the US West Coast, but it's
probably true there.  If they're NOT doing it they probably should be.
There was also several weeks of disruption to manufacturing in parts of
China.  Apparently they're coming back online now.  An article I read
claimed supply chain disruption could last into May, but the article
didn't discuss specific products affected.

It might be revealing to learn what was manufactured in the facilities
that were shut down in China, but I wouldn't know where to find such info.

Yesterday on the US Telecom conference call in which there was over

the west coast that were not getting unloaded. Is this actually
happening? What does this mean for the next 3 months supply chain? I
could see situations where even if we can get radios, cpes, we won't
be able to do installs because of things like outdoor CAT5e cable and
RJ45 crimp connectors are scarce. What about Cambium PMP450 radios?
Those are made in Mexico right? What if the virus hits mexico bad
enough that they have to shut down factories? I'm worried about all this.

Cambium is sooo *NOT* Motorola anymore. And I don't think it's fair for us

Re: [AFMUG] [ External ] Re: Cambium Webinar tomorrow

2020-03-17 Thread Matt Mangriotis via AF
You can still do this… probably via the “question box” and not your voice, but
I am planning to keep the webinar going tomorrow to answer everything we can.
There are a large number of us (engineering included) attending that can get
real-time answers to your questions.

We will also be sending out a “one on one” or private appointment sign up if
you need to talk with us about something specific (that you may not want to do
in front of an audience)… like a virtual booth where you can stop by and
discuss something. Be on the lookout for this sign-up on our website.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Preppers

2020-03-17 Thread Jason McKemie
The city here now has a hotline for reporting households that are
infected. They say it is for self reporting, but that you can call
anonymously...hmmm.

https://newschannel20.com/news/local/hotline-set-up-to-report-springfield-households-with-covid-19-patients

It seems like a kind of sweet justice if the crowds of hoarders infected
each other when they went to do their dirty deeds.

[AFMUG] Spare Waveguide?

2020-03-17 Thread Cassidy B. Larson
Anybody got a spare waveguide for a dragonwave / andrew dish? Hoping to not
have to wait the 4-6 weeks from andrews to fix one that got damaged from ice.

Looking for a 11GHz 36” (or longer) Dragonwave clip mount to Andrew/Commscope
dish.

Shoot me an email if so.

Thanks!

Cassidy

Yeah, that was the main value in doing the show.
I didn’t realize WispAmerica continued using the name after I quit supporting
them.

Perhaps I need to be having this discussion with them.

There were supposed to be certain quid pro quos...

I fail to see the purpose of a two week hold on a ship that already spent 3

I read an article saying that major ports were implementing a 14 day quarantine
on arriving ships. Not that they're stuck forever, but queuing up for 2 weeks.
I haven't read that specifically about the US West Coast, but it's probably
true there. If they're NOT doing it they probably should be. There was also
several weeks of disruption to manufacturing in parts of China. Apparently
they're coming back online now. An article I read claimed supply chain
disruption could last into May, but the article didn't discuss specific
products affected.

It might be revealing to learn what was manufactured in the facilities that
were shut down in China, but I wouldn't know where to find such info.

CAT5e cable and RJ45 crimp connectors are scarce. What about Cambium PMP450

enough that they have to shut down factories? I'm worried about all this.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Preppers

2020-03-17 Thread Ken Hohhof
Grocery stores seem free of hoarders now, I stopped to check one out and they
were pretty well stocked with bread, meat, fresh produce, dairy. I didn’t even
venture to the TP aisle But so far nobody is going to starve. When the crazy
hoarders were running amok, I couldn’t even go inside a grocery store, I was
more afraid of the crazies than the virus or gosh forbid running out of TP.

Governor just did his daily status update. 2 days ago there was a reported
case of Covid-19 in a patient at a Willowbrook long term care center. Now 48
hours later they have found 22 cases at that facility, I think it was 18
patients and 4 staff. Your guess if it spread to 22 people in 48 hours, or
testing found 22 more people who already had it, or some combination. Either
way, that’s unsettling.

I went to a Raley's last night for kicks and there was nothing: no eggs,
no dairy, no canned goods, no frozen foods, no breads, no condiments, no
paper goods (towels, napkins, TP, etc.), no cleaning products, no baking
staples like flour, not even jello. They did have plenty of fresh
produce but not potatoes. No lines to check out so I bought ice cream,
chips, and reeses. Bakery and deli counters had normal supply, but all
self serve things were pulled with notices to ask (i.e. donuts). Bulk
bins section was mostly untouched.

A store near me this morning was similar but the hoarders made the line
wrap around the inside of the store so I walked out rather than wait
forever to buy literally two items I can wait to get later (bread flour
and powdered milk for my bread machine). A local butcher shop was
cleaned out within 10 minutes of opening except for bacon. All the
liquor aisles were fully stocked though.

The takeaway here is if you need bacon and hard liquor you're good to go.

I know that in the past it was done with permission.

I also know for a 100% fact that at least one of the Quids (or is it the
Quo) is still being honored.

I suspect this is more of a situation that WISPA continued on after Chuck
quit being involved and no one had a discussion about how to go forward.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Preppers

2020-03-17 Thread James Howard
I went to the local grocery store to get lunch and see how it was. Everything
except TP seemed stocked normally. Someone was asking the manager as I walked
past him in the pizza aisle when they were expecting more TP and he said
tomorrow.

As far as the numbers and testing, the CDC has said that the typical time from
exposure to symptoms is 2 days. I worked at a nursing home while I was in
college and it wouldn’t be difficult for a mobile patient to come in contact
with WAY more people than that in a day, let along two. That said, how many of
those people who tested positive in that care facility actually have symptoms?
I assume that since they found a case (which presumably was tested because that
patient was showing symptoms) they tested everyone else in the facility. How
many of those people actually would have tested positive at the same time that
the first case did if they had been tested right away? That’s something we
don’t and can’t know. There are a certain percentage of negative tests but how
many of the positive tests are people with little or no symptoms?

I attribute the discrepancy to the lack of test kits. At this
point, they are barely able to test the people who present
symptoms. If you don't have symptoms, you probably won't get

couldn’t even go inside a grocery store, I was more afraid of the

I went to a Raley's last night for kicks and there was nothing: no
eggs, no dairy, no canned goods, no frozen foods, no breads, no
condiments, no paper goods (towels, napkins, TP, etc.), no cleaning
products, no baking staples like flour, not even jello. They did have
plenty of fresh produce but not potatoes. No lines to check out so I
bought ice cream, chips, and reeses. Bakery and deli counters had
normal supply, but all self serve things were pulled with notices to
ask (i.e. donuts). Bulk bins section was mostly untouched.

A store near me this morning was similar but the hoarders made the
line wrap around the inside of the store so I walked out rather than
wait forever to buy literally two items I can wait to get later (bread
flour and powdered milk for my bread machine). A local butcher shop
was cleaned out within 10 minutes of opening except for bacon. All the
liquor aisles were fully stocked though.

The takeaway here is if you need bacon and hard liquor you're good to go.

The amount of hoarders probably depends on where you are in the hysteria
curve.

If messaging applicable to a local area indicates that people should stay
home for a while, the stores are going to be very busy until everyone
stocks up, then empty, and somewhat back to normal.

I'm sure population plays into this. In my local area, we didn't ever run
into anything other than toilet paper/hand sanitizer/etc and certain other
shelf-stable items being out of stock. And on the shelf-stable items, it
often was that one store would be out, but the next would have at least a
bit left.

I attribute the discrepancy to the lack of test kits. At this point, they are
barely able to test the people who present symptoms. If you don't have
symptoms, you probably won't get tested.

Governor just did his daily status update. 2 days ago there was a reported case

later they have found 22 cases at that facility, I think it was 18 patients and
4 staff. Your guess if it spread to 22 people in 48 hours, or testing found 22
more people who already had it, or some combination. Either way, that’s
unsettling.

The store I went to still had potatoes. I’m always amazed that you can buy
nice big baking potatoes for 49 to 99 cents per pound. Easiest thing in the
world to bake, just stick them on the oven rack for an hour. Even better than
bananas because you can eat the skin. And you can put some of your bacon on
them!

I don’t see how anybody makes money selling potatoes, it has to be a loss
leader.

I’ve missed the last few WISPAmericas, but it felt to me like using the name
Animal Farm was more to honor the history than to capitalize on the name as
advertising. They could have called it something else, one of the “tracks”,
but it made attendees who used to go to Animal Farm in spring feel good that it
wasn’t totally gone and forgotten. Kind of a lifetime achievement aware.

I say that not knowing anything about the arrangement between Chuck and WISPA,
that’s just the vibe I got when I went to the shows.

Perhaps I need to be having this discussion with them.

One of the highlights … perhaps THE highlight … of Animal Farm was getting to
throw questions at actual product managers and developers from Motorola (now
Cambium).

Sort of like “Question Time” in the UK Parliament. Is that the one where they
ask incredibly rude questions of the Prime Minister, or is that something else?

Motorola expressly and specifically disavowed any connection with AnimalFarm
but they did send people. I tried to get Mot to sponsor a users group
meeting during the Tucson channel partner meetings and Mot said legally
there were too many problems.

So, I took it upon myself to rent the conference room and invite everyone to
come. We were the pigs taking over the farm from the farmer. Thus
AnimalFarm. And thus trademarked by WB Manufacturing as it was our trade
show and our main means of marketing each year.

But not the first time I have been knocked off by Mot and its descendants...

I went to a Raley's last night for kicks and
there was nothing: no eggs,
no dairy, no canned goods, no frozen foods, no
breads, no condiments, no
paper goods (towels, napkins, TP, etc.), no
cleaning products, no baking
staples like flour, not even jello. They did
have plenty of fresh
produce but not potatoes. No lines to check out
so I bought ice cream,
chips, and reeses. Bakery and deli counters had
normal supply, but all
self serve things were pulled with notices to
ask (i.e. donuts). Bulk
bins section was mostly untouched.

A store near me this morning was similar but the
hoarders made the line
wrap around the inside of the store so I walked
out rather than wait
forever to buy literally two items I can wait to
get later (bread flour
and powdered milk for my bread machine). A local
butcher shop was
cleaned out within 10 minutes of opening except
for bacon. All the
liquor aisles were fully stocked though.

The takeaway here is if you need bacon and hard
liquor you're good to go.

5 days according to the CDC talking head on the tv this morning.  2-14
days to show symptoms with a mean of 5 days...

As far as the numbers and testing, the CDC has said that the typical
time from exposure to symptoms is 2 days.  I worked at a nursing home
while I was in college and it wouldn’t be difficult for a mobile
patient to come in contact with WAY more people than that in a day,
let along two.  That said, how many of those people who tested
positive in that care facility actually have symptoms?  I assume that
since they found a case (which presumably was tested because that
patient was showing symptoms) they tested everyone else in the
facility.  How many of those people actually would have tested
positive at the same time that the first case did if they had been
tested right away?  That’s something we don’t and can’t know.  There
are a certain percentage of negative tests but how many of the
positive tests are people with little or no symptoms?

Grocery stores seem free of hoarders now, I stopped to check one out
and they were pretty well stocked with bread, meat, fresh produce,
dairy.  I didn’t even venture to the TP aisle  But so far nobody is
going to starve.  When the crazy hoarders were running amok, I
couldn’t even go inside a grocery store, I was more afraid of the
crazies than the virus or gosh forbid running out of TP.

Governor just did his daily status update. 2 days ago there was a
reported case of Covid-19 in a patient at a Willowbrook long term care
center.  Now 48 hours later they have found 22 cases at that facility,
I think it was 18 patients and 4 staff.  Your guess if it spread to 22
people in 48 hours, or testing found 22 more people who already had
it, or some combination.  Either way, that’s unsettling.

It seems like a kind of sweet justice if the crowds of hoarders
infected each other when they went to do their dirty deeds.

But I noticed people didn’t seem to be buying up all the fresh
produce.  So now I’m wondering if they were stocking up on
potatoes.  Whenever I buy baking potatoes, I’m amazed how much
food you get for 49 cents a pound.  And you don’t have to
freeze or even refrigerate them.  I you have a bunker, that’s
probably where you should be storing your potatoes anyway.  I
think it used to be called a root cellar.

[AFMUG] OT diagnostic test

2020-03-17 Thread chuck
I categorize people into two groups. Those the identify with Holden Caulfield.
Those that feel sorry for Holden and identify with those that wanted to help
him.
The former are the ones we need to be wary of.
The latter are the rest of us
