Library-sharing

2003-10-28 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

We have to expand our TSM-infrastructure. Today we have 2 * H80 (AIX 5.1), 2
* 3494 (each with 8 * 3590 E1A connected via SCSI to H80)
I would prefer to get 2 more AIX-Servers (6C4) with SAN-adapters and 2 *
library with 3592 (or LTO) adapted to the SAN.
But that is the most expensive way.
My question : is it possible to expand the existing 3494 Tape-Library with a
frame with 2 (4) 3592 drives and work with this part of the library from
another TSM-instance on another Unix-Server (independent from the other
TSM-Server). I don't want to share the drives between the instances, I want
to use the SCSI-3590-drives on one server, the 3592-SAN-drives on the other
server.
I think I have to bring the Library itself to SAN (??) to have it shared.
But is then always one TSM-Server the Library-manager (master), or can I
define a library for the SCSI-drives on one server and another library (in
fact the same hardware) with the SAN-drives (3592) on another TSM-server ???

Thanks for any help

File-Information from client

2003-10-28 Thread Christoph Pilgram
Hi all,

Is there a possibility to get the information about all the files of a
client in the TSM-DB as listing in a file.
I would like to have a list of files of one client with all the information
you can see, if you select files from a directory in the GUI (or Web-Client)
(Name / Size / changed / created / backedup / class ...).
With my sql-selects on TSM-database it takes a while to run over the
database, with the GUI it's just a click.

Thanks a lot

TDP for Oracle : Duplicate database on different machines gives error ORA-19507

2003-10-28 Thread Wijnbergen, AMv
Hi *sm ers,

I have a question regarding TDP for Oracle 2.2.1.0 with Oracle 8.1.7.4.
Our dba's want to duplicate a database with RMAN/TDP to a different machine.

Everything goes well when duplication is done to a local instance, but fails
to a remote host.
Is this a limitation of TDP?
We use the following rman script for duplication.

replace script db_copy {

set until time '26-OCT-2003 01:24:40';

allocate auxiliary channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' parms

'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=D:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\agentOBA\tdpo.opt)';

   set newname for datafile 1 to 'f:\dbfiles\repat\system.dbf';
   set newname for datafile 2 to 'f:\dbfiles\repat\rb_disk1.dbf';
   set newname for datafile 3 to 'f:\dbfiles\repat\rp_users.dbf';

   set newname for datafile 8 to 'f:\dbfiles\repat\rp_it2.dbf';
   set newname for datafile 9 to 'f:\dbfiles\repat\rp_ts1.dbf';
   set newname for datafile 10 to 'f:\dbfiles\repat\rp_ts2.dbf';

  'f:\dbfiles\repat\logt02.dbf' size 200K,
  'f:\dbfiles\repat\logt03.dbf' size 200K ;

release channel t1;

}

run {
execute script db_copy;

You can use 'dsmc query backup' from the command line on the client
and redirect the output to a file. This will give you the information you
need.

TDP for MSSQL - huge problem

The scheduled backup completes just few databases but always stop on msdb.
The problem doesn't occur when I start up backup manualy.

2003-10-28 Thread Rainer Holzinger
Hi Richard,

thank you for your reply.
I will ask IBM/Tivoli support for a solution about to suprress all these
messages being sent to TSM activity log. Maybe they have an answer. If they
have and you are interested I will forward that to you.

Regarding to my second question, your proposal is a good one which I
already tested before. But as you mentioned, doing it that way I will lose
TSM's return code and informations about backup end time are quite
different from real backup end. Currently our Domino guys are using these
informations for monitoring and reporting purposes. In general it seems I
have to ask them what's more important, having these informations (which
may be collected from anywhere else, e.g. TDPD log-file where backup
duration is mentioned as a value in seconds :-{ as well as the amount of
data in bytes, again :-{ , but it's there), or having the guarantee that
Domino archived transaction logs may be picked up and saved into TSM
storage.

Thank you Richard.

Rainer

I don't know the answer to your 1st question - we just accept the thousands
of messages on the log. We run the log through a filter script to select
the ones we're interested in, so we keep the full log on the server in case
we need to read it, and use the filtered version for daily monitoring.

The standard answer to your 2nd question is to put the backup command into
the background (possibly by using a script), so that the scheduler returns
control immediately and can then go on and do other things like archiving
logs. We've had to do this for all large backups (SAP, Domino and
filesystems), otherwise disk areas for archive logs fill up, as you
predict. You lose the return code in TSM, but if you write a script you can
monitor that yourself.

See the ADSM-L archives for many discussions of this.

Archive - extending retention period?

2003-10-28 Thread Ewald Jenisch
Hi,

I've got a bunch of files/directories archived for long term storage.

Archive policy says "Retention Version: 365 days", i.e. one year.

Since I need to keep many of those archived files for a longer period
of time I need to extend the retention time.

Is there any way - on the client side - to extend this time period? Or
do I have to "retrieve" everything and then "archive" it again thus
making new archive entries?

TIA for your help,
-ewald

Geetha,

Try according to the help, it may helps you.

ANR7804I An server is already running from this directory.

Explanation: The server has attempted to open the adsmserv.lock file in the

current directory but failed to do so because an existing server already has

the file open.

System Action: Server terminates.

User Response: Examine the contents of the adsmserv.lock file. The process

ID for the server that is running is recorded in this file. Two servers

cannot be started from the same directory. You may remove the adsmserv.lock

file and attempt to start the server ONLY if the recorded process ID is NOT

currently running dsmserv. The 'ps -e' AIX command can be used to display

processes that are currently running.

Yes, I would be interested. If you can be bothered, please send me a copy
of the answer. But my experience with Tivoli support is that this will take
time, so I won't hold my breath. Good luck.

With regard to your comment:
> In general it seems I have to ask them what's more important
for us there is no question about it. We *have* to clear the disk log areas
to TSM, otherwise Domino (or SAP, or Oracle) just stops. And with our
largest Domino backup taking 30 hours (1+ TB), we *cannot* afford so long a
stop in the scheduler.

Another good reason to put the jobs in the background is to get them to run
in parallel. The TSM scheduler only does 1 backup at a time, but we run
many Domino partitions, and have lots of tape drives. It's much more
efficient to run several backups in parallel (we do up to 8 at a time). In
fact, in our installation we cannot get through the night's backups without
running in parallel.

Another solution is to put some of the schedule jobs into crontab, but it's
much easier to keep an overview if all jobs are in the TSM scheduler, and
you still lose the return code to TSM.

But as I said, we run scripts and do the return code checking ourselves.
It's the only way to go for us.

Richard Foster

Our method was - with a smaller DB:

1. Stop client access.
2. Migrate disk pools.
3. Shut down TSM.
4. 'dd' DB and log raw volumes to tape.

This has the advantage of being able to stream to tape (3590 in our
case),
and is a "cold" backup of TSM state. Mind you, we never had to restore
from it, YMMV.

Given your DB size, I'd got with your option 1. Rename whichever sets of
volumes out of the way with TSM shut down, and they shouldn't get
touched.
Your fallback for upgrade will be a TSM shutdown, bunch of renames, TSM
reinstall and TSM startup (and eventual remirror). I wouldn't split off
the mirror inside TSM - leave TSM thinking it has three copies. Just
rename at the OS level to control which sets of volumes TSM uses.

Urgency dictates going straight to the Messages manual, which fully explains
what to do. The dsmserv.lock file both carries information about the currently
running server, and serves as a lock point to prevent a second instance from
running. Before trying to start the server afresh, always make sure that the
prior instance has been shut down. You don't want to end up with a damaged
database.

Re: TDP for MSSQL - huge problem

2003-10-28 Thread Del Hoobler
Sebastian,

errno = 10054 is WSAECONNRESET. It means that the TCP/IP connection
was reset and the socket was closed, terminating the backup.
This normally points to some type of network related issue.
While logged on to the same ID that shows the failures,
try using FTP to transfer some files (both directions) from the
machine running the SQL server to the machine running the TSM Server.
Repeat this a few times to see if you see similar problems.

If you do not see any problems, and your network team
does not see any network issues, please call IBM support so
they can gather some traces from both sides to diagnose the problem.

Thanks,

Del

Sebastian - The 10054 TCP/IP errno reflects a connection being reset by peer,
which in TSM terms means that the server terminated the session
with the client. Thus, the place to look is in the server Activity Log, which
should explain why it did so. It may be that server timeout values are too
low.

Upgrade & LAN FREE Licensing Question

2003-10-28 Thread Kamp, Bruce
In the process of bringing a SAN into my environment. I know I need a lan
free client but is there a new piece that I need to purchase for the TSM
server side? Also is the lan free client the only piece that I need for the
client side or does it require a backup client?

Thanks,

In mid of year I was told that a client is planned for end of this year, now
I hear that there is no client planned ?

What is the fact ??

Subject: Archive of client not showing up on TSM gui interface

Hi all, this is one Novell client that we run monthly archives on the
first of every month. We run TSM 5.1.5 on the client. The Novell client
is 5.1. We run incremental daily and all seems to be working fine. We
keep the archives for 365 days. Over the past 3 monthly archives
(aug, sept, oct), we can no longer see the archives on the Web. I can see
the remainder of the previous months on the web except the 3 in
question. I just noticed this due to needing a retrieve of Oct. The
client logs for the 3 months looked good. Gave me the totals and all was
good. Today, thought I would look at the command line and did the
retrieve with the -pick option. The 3 months are out there and TSM knows
about them, and am retrieving the data as we speak. My question is, why
are these 3 months not showing up in the web?? Thank you for any
help on this

Part of our routine to send tapes offsite includes "BACKUP STGPOOL

Part of the restoration procedure includes "RESTORE STGPOOL DISKDIRPOOL"

What would happen if there was a site disaster and the data was only on the
disk which is no longer available to perform restores? I guess what I am
asking is, without sending DIRMC off-site, can you recover from a site
disaster?

Is the directory information you referring about related to Windows systems?
You should use the DIRMC client option to store all your directory
information in a DISK based storage pool (DISK or FILE), so that it remains
on faster quicker access media for restore purposes. (Dont let that stuff go
to tape for the reasons you have outlined below.)

The DIRMC client option is not really required for Unix based systems, as
the database has enough space to store that information.

Re: Database backup retention.

2003-10-28 Thread David E Ehresman
If you're using DRM, then database backup retention is controlled by
"SET DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS". If not, then it is controlled by running
"DELETE VOLHISTORY" and specifying TODATE to control how many backups to
retain. If you are using DRM, you should NOT delete database backups
via DELETE VOLHISTORY or drm will loose track of the tapes and never add
them to the list to come back from the vault.

Re: TDPO V5.2 with RMAN setup

2003-10-28 Thread Neil Rasmussen
Dale,

You explanation of the environment might need a bit of clarification but I
will make some guesses for now. If you are running Oracle 9.2, that
version of Oracle is 64bit (Oracle dropped 32bit AIX with 9i) and therefor
you will need to make sure that your Data Protection for Oracle and your
TSM API (comes with DP for Oracle package) are 64bit. It does not matter
what your kernel mode is set to, the Oracle and DP for Oracle have to be
the same architecture. Once you verify that you will need to make sure
that your linking is set correctly as explained below.

The most common problems are due to the name of the Data Protection for
Oracle library (/usr/lib/libobk64.a). Regardless of whether Oracle is
32bit or 64bit it expects this library name to be the same
(/usr/lib/libobk.a) - we chose this naming to allow for both 32 bit and
64bit Oracle to be installed on the same machine. You have several options
at this point:

You can rename the link /usr/lib/libobk64.a to /usr/lib/libobk.a and
that should allow Oracle to easily find the library.
You can make the link $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libobk.a -> /usr/lib/libobk64.a and
then "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib;$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"
Or, you can make the link $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libobk.a ->
/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/libobk64.a and then "export
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib;$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"

I am sure that my explanations are a bit vague. If you want more detailed
information please go to link below as there are many documents that
explain in more detail this and other potential gotchas. Hope this helps.

DSM server 5.1.0.7 hangs during night backup.

2003-10-28 Thread Yury Us
Hi all,
I have very unpleasant situation with my DSM server. It hangs 1 or 2 times a
week during the night backup. Every single client (I have 500 nodes) hangs
too. So After rebooting the server all client nodes have to be restarted.

We fixed all suspicious hardware problems, installed latest AIX4.3.3 patches
and DSM server patch, all installations did not help. I ran auditdb during
this weekends. It found a few discrepancies and fixed them. But last night
server hangs again.

There is no any suspicious messages or errors in the actlog. On some clients
in dsmerror file I see the following error:
10/27/03 22:26:48 ANS1005E TCP/IP read error on socket = 7, errno = 73,
reason : 'A connection with a remote socket was reset by that socket.'.

But most nodes don't have even that.

My environment is as follows:
AIX 4.3.3
DSM Server 5.1.0.3
Nodes mixture of versions from 4.2 to 5.2 versions.

Have you ever had or heard of such a problem and what would you recommend to
do next?

With respect,
Yuriy Us.

TDP for Lotus Domino

2003-10-28 Thread Joni Moyer
Hello everyone!

I'm hoping there are some experts out here on TDP on domino servers. I am
not very familiar with the TDP portion and how it works with TSM, but here
is my question: The user's archive their databases, yet there are files
within the databases that have different retention requirements. What
would be the best way to manage this data? The easiest way would be to
archive the database under the longest retention period, but then you have
a lot of unneccessary data out on the system that, due to contracts, must
be deleted after a certain period of time. Is there any way to manage this
data properly? It was suggested by the user that they could archive the
database for one year, restore it and then choose the management class for
all of the files within the database. I think that this would be a very
big no no, but at the same time I am not sure what to tell them to do to
manage their data by their wishes. If anyone has any
suggestions/comments/practices of how to manage a similar infrastructure I
would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance!

Re: SQL to determine what offsite volumes are needed for move data

2003-10-28 Thread William F. Colwell
Hi Bill -

I am way behind on the list, but I think I can help you.

First there isn't any sql I know of that will do what you want.

But, the old query content command will give you the answer, you just need
to post process the output.

The steps are

1.  make a macro file of 'q con' commands for all the tapes you are interested in;
You can use sql to do this. For example -

q content 02 count=-1 f=d
q content 02 count=1 f=d
q content 06 count=-1 f=d
q content 06 count=1 f=d

2. Next run dsmadmc and capture the output, for example

dsmadmc -id= -password= macro C:\tsmmacs\qcon.mac >qcon.lst

3. process qcon.lst (no example here) and sort it by filename. You should be able to
see all the start and end tape sequences.

Hope this helps,

Bill Colwell

for the future. In the past, I partitioned the 3494 and divided the six
SCSI drives we had between between two systems, four and two. At present
we have a single 3494, with five frames, two fibre connected drives, and 6
SCSI drives hooked into a San Data Gateway, shared between two systems. It
works, but offers more headaches than I need. We are looking to replace
this with a Licensed Library Manager, either on a zLinux platform (if it
will work) or a small AIX or Linux86 box.

Hi all,

We have to expand our TSM-infrastructure. Today we have 2 * H80 (AIX 5.1), 2

Re: TDP for Lotus Domino

2003-10-28 Thread Del Hoobler
Joni,

I am not quite sure I understand completely since for Domino,
each database is contained in a single .NSF file...
...unless you are talking about groupings of Domino databases
making up a logical database of some sort (like Domino.Doc)

Data Protection for Domino works at the database file level (.NSF file).
You could assign a policy setting to meet the retention requirements
through management classes on the backups. You would assign the
management classes to those database backups by using the
INCLUDE option in the DSM.OPT file (see User's Guide for details.)

You may also want to look into the IBM CommonStore product that
has document archive function for Domino servers.

Thanks,

Del

New TSM server

2003-10-28 Thread Coats, Jack
I want to start a second server (instance) on the same computer.
I get it set up OK, but when I check the licensing it is using eval
licenses.
Can I get it to use the same license pool as the primary server or how do
I set up a secondary license pool?

The first sever is called tsm_server1 and server 2 is tsm_server2.

My server is currently Win2K, TSM server is 4.2.3.1
I never recieved an initial distribution CD from IBM that had the license
keys on it.
By the time I was hired, some consultant was in here and had it running.
But not
having the initial CD makes things a bit rough sometimes.

TIA ... Jack

There are many ways to skin a cat.
So for partitioned servers I would prefer to have separate TSM node for
each Domino partition
- each partition/node can run its schedules independently from others -
both parallelism without losing the result codes
- you can very easily split one or more partitions to another server if
the load increases

Hi Rainer

Yes, I would be interested. If you can be bothered, please send me a copy
of the answer. But my experience with Tivoli support is that this will
take
time, so I won't hold my breath. Good luck.

With regard to your comment:
> In general it seems I have to ask them what's more important
for us there is no question about it. We *have* to clear the disk log
areas
to TSM, otherwise Domino (or SAP, or Oracle) just stops. And with our
largest Domino backup taking 30 hours (1+ TB), we *cannot* afford so long
a
stop in the scheduler.

Another good reason to put the jobs in the background is to get them to
run
in parallel. The TSM scheduler only does 1 backup at a time, but we run
many Domino partitions, and have lots of tape drives. It's much more
efficient to run several backups in parallel (we do up to 8 at a time). In
fact, in our installation we cannot get through the night's backups
without
running in parallel.

Another solution is to put some of the schedule jobs into crontab, but
it's
much easier to keep an overview if all jobs are in the TSM scheduler, and
you still lose the return code to TSM.

But as I said, we run scripts and do the return code checking ourselves.
It's the only way to go for us.

Regards
Richard Foster

Solaris 5.2 client memory

2003-10-28 Thread Luke Dahl
Hi All,
Noticing something fishy - the 5.2.0.0 solaris tsm client seems to
grab nearly all the memory on a system and doesn't free it up after
backup completion. Anyone else seen this? Seems to require a system
reboot (client system) to free up the memory again.
Solaris 9 on both
TSM Server 5.2.1.2 (Sun 480 w/10Gb of memory)
TSM Client 5.2.0.0 (Sun 420 w/2Gb of memory)

I tried running the client on the tsm server with the same results -
took all but 150M of 10Gb of memory while the client was running and it
didn't free up after the backup completed. Sound like a client memory
leak? Hadn't seen this on the 5.1.5 client.

a defunct process of tivoli server was there and hence i was
unable to start the server.I have to reboot the server
for that to be killed.

But again a new problem.Immediately when the dsmserv was up
