Webclient through firewall
Hi, I have a couple of tsm clients in my DMZ. The backups through the firewall are no problem at all (port 1500). When I want to use the http://xxx.xxx.xxx:1581, no problem to get the applet started. However, as soon as I try to start a backup or restore from the applet, I get a java error "Connection timed out". With the firewall open on all ports: no problem. I found the "webports" setting and have put that in the dsm.sys file (I am running redhat 8) on the client machine: passwordaccess generate compression yes Editor yes schedlogretention 3 D txnbytelimit24576 httpport1581 webports1584 1585 I opended these ports on the firewall (from internal to dmz: open ports: 1581, 1584, 1585) and still no luck. When I shutdown and restart dsmcad and retry the connection, I can start a backup or restore version once. If I try another backup or restore, it fails with the timeout error. Looking at the firewall sniffer, it seems tsm starts with the ports set by webports, but also uses other ports (like 1841). As I understand from the doc, the webports variable should be the only thing and this behaviour seems like a bug. Does anybody know how this can be solved? Re: Exchange TDP Query Question
Gerald, No. This won't work. Well, it won't work unless you are using the same TSM NODENAME for all of your Exchange Servers.. which I don't recommend. The command below will query all of the Exchange Server backups that appear under the NODENAME that you have in the DSM.OPT file. The "/FROMEXCSERV=server-name" option is really there for doing cross-Exchange server restores... where you are doing a restore from a different Exchange Server.. and need to specify the Exchange Server name that the backup was taken under. Archives not bound to correct MC ?
Hello fellow xSM'ers, So, this weekend I ran 2 archives of some files we occasionally must archive for indefinite periods of time (basically forever). I ran 2 archives and the following is the command used for one of them: archive -delete -description="Land Board Meeting Minutes Books 5,6,7,8 & 9 Re-Archived 10/04/2003" archmc=ARCHIVE-PERMANENT Note the: archmc=ARCHIVE-PERMANENT yet the files were not bound to this MC as can be seen by viewing the JPG linked below taken from the client's GUI. The same thing happened to the second archive which used the exact same command except it referenced a separate list of files. Yes, the MC does exist, there were no errors reported in the archive process (client side or server) and the policy set is active. Anyone have any thoughts on this? http://gis.idl.state.id.us/archive.jpg TSM Server: V5.1.7.0 on Win2k SP4 TSM Client: V5.1.6.9 on Win2k SP4 Chris Murphy IT Network Analyst Idaho Dept. of Lands Office: (208) 334-0293 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Archives not bound to correct MC ?
Do you log the output of the "dsmc archive" command? If so, check the output and dsmerror.log. I imagine that your problem is due to a missing hyphen (-) in front of the "archmc" option. That is, you are using "archmc=blah" when you need "-archmc=blah". Re: Archives not bound to correct MC ?
Chris, The error log message "10/04/2003 15:08:37 ANS1076E *** Directory path not found ***" is what I would expect for this kind of problem. Since the "archmc" option was not preceded by a hyphen, TSM interpreted it as a file specification. Since you have no file by that name, it generated the ANS1076E message. If, when you run the archive, you redirect stdout to a file, then somewhere in that file you would also see the message. By the way, as of 5.1, you can also test the return code from dsmc (from a script check %errorlevel% or if you just enter the command manually, when dsmc ends issue "echo %errorlevel%"). It would have ended with a return code of '12' due to the error message. That is another means of gauging the success of the operation. LTO external labels
Some time ago, someone on this list wrote inquiring about the use of external labels on LTO1 cartridges. Many other types of cartridges have a recessed area for applying an external identifying label other than the bar code, but the LTO cartridges do not. We also have a requirement for external ownership labels, and here is our experience: We bought some Avery non-removable printer labels, 3.5 x 3/4 inch. We put one on the top rear of the cartridge (over the recessed arrow). We put another on the back face of the cartridge (the surface opposite the bar code - that one required trimming down a bit shorter.) I did 200 forced mounts/dismounts of the cartridge. Now this TSM server isn't terribly busy; 200 mounts should correspond to something like 3 months normal use for our busiest tapes. I had no peeling, curled edges, mount failures, or jams. There are no scuffs or any indications of wear on the labels. So we consider this an acceptable risk. Granted the print is tiny, but it will suffice. IBM LTO1 drives, IBM LTO1 cartridges. YMMV.

Re: LTO external labels
I have been involved with some of these discussions in the past. I wonder what your labels will do though after they have been checked in/out a handful of times AND have been handled by a number of people? I thought about this some after last discussion on it. I again looked at our IBM LTO1 cartridges. On the "bottom" of them, there is printed light green ink with the country of manufacture and P/N etc. I suspect this is done by some type of Ink Jet printer? Is there a reltively inexpensive printer unit out there that can print on these cartridges - or other types of tapes? This labeling essentially has no "depth" to it so can't hang up and doesn't wear off. We do have a DVD unit here (not TSM connected) that writes DVD-RAM's and then puts DVD in another part of the unit and writes a label on DVD (appears to be inkjet or something similar). David B. There are no scuffs or any indications of wear on the labels. So we consider this an acceptable risk. Granted the print is tiny, but it will suffice. IBM LTO1 drives, IBM LTO1 cartridges. YMMV. ## This message is for the named person's use only. It may contain confidential, proprietary, or legally privileged information. Re: TSM Query to determine what is on a single tape
I use this to count files by client per tape: select volume_name,node_name,count(file_name) as #files from contents where volume_name=upper('$1') group by volume_name,node_name This lists client's files on a given tape: select node_name,file_name as "File Name " from contents where node_name=upper('$1') and volume_name=upper('$2') Shouldn't be too hard to add filespace on either one. Our offsite storage vendor uses their own bar-code labels to track inventory from multiple customers and they use standard paper-based self-stick laser labels, I have cartridges with more than two years of service and no peeling. ESCON 3590 and Linux TSM server
My co-workers and I have been researching the possibility of migrating our TSM server from OS/390 to mainframe Linux. We have found a number of IBM conference presentations indicating that the mainframe Linux TSM server supports only tape drives attached by means of the Fibre Channel Protocol. On the face of it, this implies that ESCON-attached 3590 drives will not be supported. Is this a correct interpretation of IBM's statements on device support?
Re: LAN only for UNIX
Juan, Whatever ip address you supply in the dsm.sys file for TCPSERVERADDRESS whether it is a css switch or 10/100 Ethernet, it does not matter to AIX. You will be limited to the performance of the network. You have to run cfgmgr -v to allow TSM to walk the Device Bus and locate your tape drives on aix and they should show up as rmt devices. ITSM for Databases 5.2 requirements
I am going to need to use ITSM for Databases (TDP Oracle) to backup Oracle 9.2.2 DB on Solaris 8, 64bit. The Tivoli Manual states requirements for TDPO 5.2 as TSM API 5.1.5 and TSM Server 5.1.0 as minimum. However the online requirements say TSM API 5.1.5 but just says TSM server, doesn't state a version. Question: Does TDPO 5.2 work with my current TSM Server 4.2.3.4 on AIX? If it works, do I loose any functionality by staying with this server? (I will be upgrading to 5.1 or 5.2 server soon, just want to see if I will be forced sooner). Thanks, David B. Re: Fundamental Migration Design Flaw
I have to second what Mark said. We run relatively small disk pools on purpose, and I have a MaxSize set on every one of them. I have some Oracle table files that are 2 GB each. There is simply no reason to store that on disk instead of tape, so we send that kind of stuff straight to tape. On our GigE connected server writing to LTO-1, we sustain 27 MB/s as measured by TSM. Restore performance would be about equal, so the minute or so to mount the tape and seek the file just isn't significant. One thing to keep in mind is that the MaxSize applies to *aggregate* size, not "file" size. For the 24 GB disk pool upstream of our LTO I set a MaxSize = 50 MB with a client aggregate size capped at 48 MB. That data path gets backups from our main file servers. So any file larger than 50 MB will go direct to tape. By morning, the disk pool is usually 30-60% full, which is perfect. The smaller, aggregated files stay on disk until 5 pm when we force migrate them to tape. Works like a charm. Tab Trepagnier TSM Administrator Laitram LLC "Stapleton, Mark" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 10/05/2003 10:57 PM Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:Re: Fundamental Migration Design Flaw There is a decent workaround until more diskpool space arrives. Set the storage pool parameter MAXSIZE to a setting that will ensure that these "open files" (which must be large and voluminous, based on the fact that they would take up almost half of a 42GB diskpool) go directly to tape rather than disk. Also, you could consider changing copy serialization so that the TSM server doesn't try to resend those "open files" so many times. To tell the truth, if you have 20GB+ of "open files", consider moving your TSM server to version 5.2, which has better handling of "open files". What kind of files are they, anyway? Fundamental flaw? I don't think so. Your situation contains an unfortunate combination of circumstances that don't normally in most IT environments. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Re: LTO external labels
Believe it or not Jack; For a small quantity of tapes, I was able to use Microsoft Word to print barcode labels. Okay they did not have color, and I had to first find a good 3 of 9 font on the web, but once that work was done, I was able to print barcodes with my own readable human words underneath. The barcode rules require an eight digit code surrounded by the start and stop characters. The last two digits of the 8 character label is L1. So I used "*SB0010L1*" to indicate my sysback tape number 10. The bar coding font has to be large enough for the reader to read without error. Some libraries can read fine barcode print, and others required quite large barcode font size. Re: empting a read only tape.
Yes, this is how it works, ...and, This is a Problem. I frequently make a tape read only if it is having enough I/O errors to suspect the tape media. So I want to get it out of circulation, perhaps to send it for recirtification or replacement. (At USD$100/each I do not casually discard suspect S-DLT tapes!) But if you are careless about how you do this, it will get reused, sometimes very quickly. So I always work deliberately - instead of letting expiration and reclamation remove the data from the suspect tape, I do a MOVE DATA. Then, with my REUSEDELAY set to 2 days, I have a chance to grab the tape while it is still Pending. The best way to remove a suspect tape that is Pending is to do a DELETE VOL, and then ***IMMEDIATELY*** do a UPDATE LIBVOL STATUS=PRIVATE. If you are slow, it will get reused the very next time that a scratch tape is needed - there's some kind of logic here that probably makes sense except in this special circumstance. Then leave it physically in the library until your next database backup, after which you can safely remove it. Re: labeling failure
Dear juean, The command u are using is valid if your volumes are already lablled and are ready to go to scratch. So run AUDIT LIBRARY syntax is audit library 3584_lib .This will remove the inconsistencies of the volume labels. And if your volumes are fresh ,then first label these volumes using checkin=scratch option and the checkin in the library.
