how to free licenses ??
Hi *SM'ers ! A little embarrassing problem : a few days ago I got a message from TSM server, telling me I was not in compliance with license terms : - so far I agree, I added few new nodes to the system ... I then decided to remove some old nodes that where not in use anymore, with the goal freeing some licenses ... Guess what ? I still have the same number of managed servers in use !!! How is it possible to update this value ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated ... Re: how to free licenses ??
Arnaud, What TSM version? If the newer version, actually TSM vs ADSM (I believe), it is supposed to work such that only "active clients" are counted in the license figure and after so many days of inactivity they are no longer counted. Let us know the TSM version, and I bet someone will have the specific info to assist. Tom Melton Emory HealthCare >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/12/01 02:28AM >>> Hi *SM'ers ! WIN2k DNS Backup
Can someone please answer this. We are moving our DNS server from Sun Box to Windows 2000 and was wondering if anyone has done a backup of DNS on WIN2K and if they had a problem backing this and if yes what was the workaround? Mehdi - I don't have an answer for you; but I think the more compelling question is whether a restoral of a DNS server with then-old data would be a viable concept. Certainly, restoring the software and static data would be appropriate, but then there is all the temporal DNS information... Richard Sims, BU
Audit vol fails
Good mornining all, One of my DLT IV tapes seems to have gone bad last night. When I try to run an audit vol fix=yes on the volume the system complains that there was an i/o error while trying to read the vol label. This causes the process to fail. I have no way of mounting this vol and there is data on it. Other than recreating the vol from the copy pool is there another way to fix this? Jack Palmadesso
Tape/Drive problems
Hello all and welcome to tape/drive hell. Last night I just happened to be looking at TSM from home when I discovered 2 tape drives offline. When I tried to change the status I received the following message: 07/11/01 20:41:26 ANR8413E UPDATE DRIVE: Drive RMT4 is currently in use. 07/11/01 20:54:15 ANR8413E UPDATE DRIVE: Drive RMT1 is currently in use. I called operations and discovered they had had an alert on rmt1. A tape was mounted and could not be removed by TSM so they removed it. Seems as though an almost exact thing happened to rmt4 and the tape would not come out. Did they call me, no...did they call IBM, noI took care of that, fortunately I just happened to be online and discovered this. IBM says it sounds as if the tape that was in rmt4 sounds as if it's dragging so they removed it from the library. That's great, now I have a tape, possibly 2, with data on it and it sounds as if I don't want to put it back in to try and move the data. What's the easiest way to fix this I still could not get the drives online, even after IBM says they fixed things, so my solution was to restart the system. Sure maybe I could have brought down TSM and restarted it alone, but I didn't feel like wasting time and then discovering I needed to restart the system anyway. This way I'm covered all the way around, if this didn't work IBM would be getting another call. The restart workedbut for how long? I'll have to keep an eye on things today while the drives are busy copying data. In the mean time I need to figure out how to get the data from this tape(s) moved. The other burning question is, after IBM fixed things, why couldn't I get the drives back online through TSM? Why the restart? Re: Tape/Drive problems
I have a IBM 3575 library and have had similar events a couple of times. My understanding of what happens is this. Some error happens on tape drive and tape won't dismount, so *SM still thinks tape is mounted - drive in use. Then we dismount tape through other than *SM methods. *SM doesn't know this. The only way I have found to fix is to restart *SM - and I always run a library audit to clear any tape location issues. To clear tape, if it's not damaged, I would do a MOVE DATA on the suspect tape. Could also do an audit volume to check it. Same here occasionally when tapes get stuck or drives go offline we have to restart ADSM. Even after issueing update drive commands. Re: Audit vol fails
I think recreating (restore volume) is the simplest way. If the original tape is not damaged, then I would do a LABEL LIBVOL on it with overwrite=yes after it is cleared and see if tape can be reused. My caveat about using overwrite=yes applies because you can overwrite good tapes! Re: International characters on WinNT
Thanks Mike, I understand now. We're running a 4.1 server, so that must be the reason why the backup fails. We have no intention to 4.2 any time soon (the upgrade to 4.1 took place just a few hours ago), so I'll ask the customer to rename his files to file name that don't contain characters from another code page. Re: Tape/Drive problems
... >IBM says it sounds as if the tape that was in rmt4 sounds as if it's >dragging so they removed it from the library. ... Hi, Geoff - "Dragging"? I've never heard that one before, in all the years I've been working with IBM 34xx/35xx tapes. In my experience, mechanical problems have always been due to drive problems or irregularities, and not the cartridges. I'm very suspicious of CEs who blame cartridges for drive problems. You didn't say what they did to fix the problem. If they didn't work on the drives and fix whatever their problems were, per diagnostic codes, then you didn't get a fix. Certainly, if this is not a new tape and has been mounted and used many times before, then there is little probability of the tape being the problem. Remember, there's 1 moving part in the tape, and a helluva lot more in the drive. We've had a bunch of problems with the upgraded 3590E drives. (Why, when the upgrade involved a whole pallet of boxes and parts, they didn't simply replace the drives with factory-certified units, is a big question for IBM, particularly given all the problems that customers have had with the field-upgraded units.) Our CEs have found a lot of problems with the vacuum subsystems, and have replaced some. With tapes stuck in drives, I've *always* been able to eject them either from the drive front panel or a power cycle of the drive, and once resolved get the drive back into service under ADSM, without restarting ADSM or otherwise affecting service with the remaining drives. The affected tapes went on to be used by ADSM, as is: no need to move the data. (It's not a tape problem.) Per the TSM Messages manual, ASC=15, ASCQ=01 is a mechanical positioning error; your ASC=5A, ASCQ=01 is operator media removal; ASC=3A, ASCQ=00 is medium not present. I doubt that the problem drives were properly reset for TSM to know of a state transition. Make sure that a Reset is done from the front panel, and a power cycle if needed, with a clean state reflected on the front panel afterward. Richard Sims, BU

If the tape is not a total wreck, you might be able to read it on another drive. The other choice is to have a tape recovery company recover the data. But this is costly and restoring the volume from a copy pool tape would be much better and cheaper. len
Re: Tape/Drive problems
Hi Geoff (and all folks ...) I just wanted to add a little thing to what my enlightened predecesors said : the 3575 library is a kind of very sensitive animal : it doesn't like to be manipulated manually, that means if any technician has oppened the door and pushed the eject button of your drives to get the "stucked" tapes back, it didn't appreciate it at all, that's the reason why you had to stop your system. This library has a kind of internal inventory : if something is done by hand, the machine doesn't keep track of it, and when it realises somethin doesn't match with what it considers as beeing it's content, it simply hangs ! Rebooting the systems just obliges the library to re-do it's inventory ... But be aware of the fact that TSM is not informed of those modifications until you perform an audit of the library, or you restart the program. -Original Message- From: Palmadesso Jack Sent: Donnerstag, 12. Here's a bit of what happened last night in case anyone cares to see it 07/11/01 19:10:17 ANR8302E I/O error on drive RMT4 (/dev/rmt4) (OP=OFFL, CC=0, KEY=04, ASC=15, ASCQ=01, SENSE=70.00.04.00.00.00.- 00.58.00.00.00.00.15.01.FE.02.31.5D.40.01.00.01.01.20.0- 0.FF.12.40.00.00.1B.08.05.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00- .00.00.00.00.00.00.00.FF.FF.FF.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.- 00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.32.35.44.20.20.20.20.0- 0.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00, Description=An undetermined error has occurred). Re: checkin errors
Actually, the tape will go into error often after the tape is inserted into the drive and validated and checked. The error "seems" to occur while the tape is being place by the gripper back onto the rack. I have even had the same error occur to abend the service yet still check the tape in correctly. The drives are defined and on-line in TSM and are available in the library. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks Rob

Re: Tape/Drive problems
I've been seeing these exact problems for weeks with on og my remote site. I escalated the problem within IBM. They sent out their 3494 "top Gun" who did an extended PM on all the drives in this system(8). The problems cleard up for a week and now we're seeing them again. Ask you CS if you have the double clip retainer that holds the tape in the drive when its inserted. It seems like they've flip flopped on the issue of whether or not it should be removed. Ours are all removed now. We still have problems wih tapes sticking in drives where a reset of the drive and a power off do-not correct the problem.

Re: WIN2k DNS Backup
I have not done this, and have only used DNS on Windows NT, but since no one else was biting. Windows NT stores DNS information in the registry as well as a directory... \winnt\system32\dns\. I think that there is a way to have it store the information only in file, not the registry and possibly vice versa. Backing up this directory is not a problem. The problem is getting Windows to use it when you restore it. If you simply lose the directory or want to go back to a previous version of DNS information you can probably stop DNS, restore the file and start DNS again. Disaster recovery of the NT system is another matter. If you don't have a bare-bones restore option for the system, you may need to reinstall Windows, TSM, and DNS. When DNS is installed, and the DNS files (\winnt\system32\dns\) restored Windows will not read them. You need to go into DNS and recreate each zone. When it asks for the name of the new zone file, use the name of the one that you restored (the DNS files should be restored at this time). Windows will then create the zone with all of the entries that were in the restored file. There is probably an easier way to do this, but I haven't looked hard enough to find it. A lot of this is testing that you can do with NT/2000 without TSM. SQL on OS390
I see lots of SQL floating around here. Since my server is OS390, I tried a "query" in batch. However, the command was too long for a 72-column "card". What character is used to continue SQL commands onto subsequent lines ? I tried the standard "-" which works for almost *ALL* other OS390 utilities, but it didn't work for TSM. Re: TDP for SQL 1.1.2
Bruce, Are you running this on a NT 4 or 2000 cluster? Is the cluster service running? If you run the "dsmc query filespace" program with the same dsmsql.opt, do you see the same error? What version of the TSM API are you running with? ("sqldsmc /adsmqueryserver" will tell you the answer.) If it's a Windows 2000 cluster and an older TSM API, it may not be working correctly. Re: Peculiar disaster recovery situation
This is not a strange situation at all. I dealt with the same issue during our DR test last year. Here's the steps I took: 1. Before you can restore the TSM database you'll need to update the device configuration file (pointed to by the DEVCONFIG statement in the dsmserv.opt file). Look for the "DEFINE LIBRARY" statement for the 3494 and change it to read: DEFINE LIBRARY libname TYPE=MANUAL Save the file and restore the TSM database. Manual 3590 drives each have an LCD which displays the volser of the tape to mounted on that drive so you'll know which tape to mount on which drive. As I recall, you'll also see a mount message on the TSM console. 2. After the TSM database is restored you need to remember that the library and drive definitions are kept there and they still reflect the 3494 library you have at home. These need to be changed, too. Start the TSM server and bring up an admin session (dsmadmc) and issue these commands: DEL DRIVE 3494lib drivename <- do this for all 4 tape drives DEF LIBR 3590LIB TYPE=MANUAL DEF DRIVE 3590LIB drivename DEVICE=devicename <- do all 4 drives UPD DEVCLASS classname LIBR=3590LIB MOUNTL=4 <- do this for each devclass which used the 3494 library After doing these steps I was able to restore files to a NetWare server. Here's the URL of a page at adsm.org which talks about the same thing (which is how I found out about this) http://msgs.adsm.org/cgi-bin/get/adsm0002/343.html Let me know if you need any further info. From there on it is the same as usual. -Original Message- From: Yahya Ilyas [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2001 4:18 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Restore on a different client machine? Re: Restore on a different client machine?
Take a look at Chapter 3. Backing up and Restoring Files (pg 35 onward) of the "Using the Backup-Archive Clients" (this is from Ver 3 Release 7) so since you didn't send any info on Version you are using, the location may vary. Use the -virtualnodename option as the syntax is tricky with the -fromnode option. Be sure to read the blurb on "set access". Re: TDP for SQL 1.1.2
Bruce, Officially, TDP for SQL 1.1.2 is supported only on SQL 6.5 and SQL 7. See: http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/tdp_ms.html#SQL SQL 2000 support was added with TDP for SQL 2.2.0 early this year. Version 2 added a whole lot of new function. See: http://www.tivoli.com/products/index/data_protect_mssql/index.html We have tested TDP for SQL 2.2.0 with SQL 2000 active/active in a Windows 2000 cluster with no problems. Interestingly, your query filespace output shows that you have successfully backed up the "consigment" and the "dbadmin" databases to this node on 7/10/2000. How were you able to do that? To get around this problem you could remove the CLUSTERNODE YES option from the options file but your generated password may not work properly in a cluster failover situation. You could try calling IBM/Tivoli service. A trace would help not sure how far you'd get since your not running in a supported environment. Reliability of Super DLT drives
Hi We are thinking of using a couple of Super DLT drives for special storage purposes, not part of our TSM system. Is anyone using Super DLT, and if so, are they performing as expected? Run the command AUDIT LICENSES to update this value, and get back into compliance. How to make to inclexcl list to fit my needs???
Hi all TSMers, I am trying to build an include/exclude list for a HPUX box. I want to backup something sometimes and not to backup this same thing others, the problem is that if I put it on an exclude statement, I will never be able to backup it unless I include it again. I have this: /opt/tivoli /opt/OMImag /opt/netscape /opt/MC1 /opt/MC2 . . /opt/MC6 /opt/data /opt/development . . . /opt/lotsofdirs I want to backup the whole /opt filesystem but the MC1 and MC2...MC6 in the night and to backup only this MC* at in the day. I have already tryied to use two incl/excl lists but when I use the second one and some file that was included is now excluded it is automaticly deleted by an expiration process. I tryied to do the backup with a dsmc command but it becomes an never-ending line (too long). Hope you can give some advice. David. __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! File Permissions on Restore
As part of my DR activities, I will be restoring files from many NT servers onto single (consolidated) servers. If I restore files to a machine of a different name than the source, how can I assure that ownership/permissions will work correctly for the files on the "new" machine? missing volumes
Hi All, I have some volumes which appears in a "q libv" as follows...(ythis is just one of them) 3575LIB1 11824F Private59 The usual forth field of "Data" is not displayed. Does this mean that this is a "scratchable" tape??? Also, from the actlog, the last entry for this tape is an atempted checkin, which has failed as ADSM says that the tape is already in the library. The next most recent entry for the tape is a "checkout" from the library, which has failed, because the tape it got was the wrong one(I think the inventory is stuffed.) As I am physically holding this tape in my hand, I am very confused as to what is going on. Several tapes are like this. It also seems that after doing a "tapeutil -f /dev/smc0 inventory" that some of the tapes that are displayed are not the ones that physically appear in the slot that it says. Quite strange. Has anyone got some clues on how to sanity check and fix this inventory issue please? cheers steve ** Bunnings Legal Disclaimer: 1) This document is confidential and may contain legally privileged information. speaking of SQL, does anyone know where the SQL reference is for ADSM because it doesn't appear to be the same standard that we have on ORacle. thanks steve ** Bunnings Legal Disclaimer: 1) This document is confidential and may contain legally privileged information.
