Hi,

I am currently evaluating a TSM KM by OTL software with Patrol client and
console (you can get an evaluation copy). And I do think this is worth
investing.

Re: Informix ON-Bar restoration performance problem

2001-02-27 Thread Andreas Buser

Hi,

normaly you schedule a backup with multiple paralllel running processes.
But for the restore often these processes run sequential, because the
backups are colloacted on a few tapes. The processes can not read parallel
from tape. So try to desperse your backups on more tapes. (To investigate
this ask your ADSM-ADmin to do several "q sess f=d" cmds, here you will see
sessions waiting for a tape which ois already allocated to an other
session.)

An other reason are the logs, depending on the amount of logs you have to
roll forward, this can take an astonishing time.

Hi

We are using Informix 7.24.UC3 with Tivoli storage Manager on AIX 4.3.3. My
problem is about Database restoration.
I take complete databse backup by using onbar -b -w -L 0 command. For 194
GB
Database, system takes 3 hours and 30 min. But when I tried to restore same
backup using onbar -r -w -p, it takes around 26 Hours.

The hardware setup is as follows:-

RS/6000 H70 with 1.5 GB main memory, 2 SSA Advanced RAID controller
connected to SSA cabinet having 16 disks each of 36 GB. The 2 SSA
controllers have 4 SSA loops with 4 disks per loop and each loop is
configured as RAID 0.
The tape drive 3590 E11 is exclusively connected Fast / Wide SCSI
controller
on H70.

The relevant contents of onconfig file are as follows:-

BAR_MAX_BACKUP 6
BAR_RETRY 1
BAR_NB_XPORT_COUNT 10
BAR_XFER_BUF_SIZE 4
BAR_BSALIB_PATH=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin/bsashr10.o

Can anyone have any helpful OS/Informix/Hardware level hints to reduce the
restoration time ?

Pls feel free to contact me in case of any doubt.

Convert the packages to .deb using Alien. You will have
to install ignoring dependencies/forcing.

You wont get the GUI going unless you find the correct library.
(don't care for the GUI myself)

Re: New server migration

2001-02-27 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi Denis
Your scenario should work.
You should indeed do a format db. The database and recovery log should be
formatted before TSM can fill them by using the restore db command.
You will however have to do a upgrade db. This is only done automatically if
you perform an in-place upgrade from ADSM to TSM, but since you are moving
to a new server, you will have to do it manually. Don't worry, it takes
about 5 to 10 minutes or less.
You've answered your questions about the log and database name yourself! The
q logvol showed /lgaa1dk2/lg and /lgaa1dk6/lg which means that you have one
recovery log, mirrored by ADSM across two volumes. The first file is called
lg and is located in /lgaa1dk2 and the second file (also called lg) is
located in the /lgaa1dk6 filespace. About the same goes for the database as
far as I could remember for the 3466.
You will have to allocate the database and log files on your new host by
issuing the following commands:
Create the log and db:
dsmfmt -m -log /lgaa1dk2/lg 1980 /lgaa1dk6/lg 1980
dsmfmt -m -db /dbaa1dk2/db 1980 /dbaa1dk6/db 1980
Format the database and log files :
dsmserv format 2 /lgaa1dk2/lg /lgaa1dk6/lg 2 /dbaa1dk2/db /dbaa1dk6/db

Subject: New server migration

Hello,
I am planning to migrate my ADSM server to a new Server running TSM.
ADSM 3.1.2.50 RS/6000 R20 (IBM 3466 B03) 3494 Library 3590 B1A drives- OLD
SERVER
TSM 3.7 RS/6000 H70 (IBM 3466 C01) - 3494 Library 3590 E1A drives - NEW
SERVER
AND NEW 3494
Here is my basic plan:
 From the old server:
1. Copy devconfig and volhist. Record db and log size from q log and q db
2. Initiate a full db backup then eject from library / insert in new Library
 From the new server:
1. Restore devconfig and volhist.
2. Format the db and log via:
dsmserv format 1 sizeinMB 1 sizeinMB
3. Restore the db via:
 dsmserv restore db todate=
From what I have read I will not have to do a upgrade db because when
running
on AIX this is done automatically.
4. Move all the tapes from the old 3494 to the new 3494.

The part I am not sure of is the format db command. Is this necessary if
I'm
doing a restore db?
How can I find out what my database name and recovery log name is?
This is the output from q logvol:
Volume Name CopyVolume Name CopyVolume Name Copy
(Copy 1) Status (Copy 2) Status (Copy 3) Status
  -- -- --
/lgaa1dk2/lg Sync'd /lgaa1dk6/lg Sync'dUndef-
   ined

This is the output from q log:
Available Assigned Maximum MaximumPage Total Used Pct
Max.
Space Capacity Extension ReductionSizeUsable Pages Util
Pct
(MB) (MB) (MB) (MB) (bytes) Pages
Util
- - - --- - - -
-
1,9801,980 0 1,976 4,096 506,368 215 0.0
1.1

(Courier New and Font 10 will make the q log, logvol look normal)

Would the command be:dsmserv format db 1 lgaa1dk2 1980 1 ?
Would I have to issue this command for each recovery log volume and each db
volume?
I think I'm missing something here... I've spent hours searching the list
and
reading the adsm guides but I am
still unsure.. I'm a new adsmer, sorry for the "dumb" questions..
Thanks in advance,
Denis

Try not using the -w command this could be causing the long restore time...
try using
onbar -b -l0 and when it restores it will restore individual tablespaces
that it wrote to multiple tapes.. multi streaming versus single streaming.

Why does a point in time restore try to restore deleted files.

2001-02-27 Thread Marc Layne

Hi All
I posted a question yesterday about point in time restore but i wish to
clarify my question. Basically i need to know why if a file was backed up on
the 10 October 2000 and subsequently deleted, and i do a point in time
restore to February 23 2001.. why is it trying to restore the deleted file.
PIT restore is done via the GUI. Even if i am doing full backups..surely if
the file odes not exist..(has been deleted) then PIT restore should not try
and restore it . I run a Expire inventory every day.

Re: Checkin tape/Label tape

2001-02-27 Thread Bernhard Unold

We use this (from dsmc):
First we make sure that all tapes in the library are checked in to tsm:
  checkin libv ZITLIB1 search=y checklab=bar status=scratch
  checkin libv ZITLIB1 search=y checklab=bar status=private
Then we put the tapes to be labeled into the library.
Then we issue the label command:
  label libv zitlib1 search=yes checkin=scratch overwrite=yes
volrange=aa,bb
With search=yes only only tapes not checked in are labeled.
With volrange we specify the labels of our volumes. For example
volrange=000209,000240.
The volser is read from the barcode label. Only volumes within the range
are labeled.
The overwrite=yes specifies to overwrite whatever ist at the tape
before.
The labeled volumes are checked in as scratch.

We are using the STK Powderhorn with 9840 drives in a TSM 3.7 (AIX)
environment and TSM4.1 (OS/390) environment. We will soon be implementing
some fiber drives also to a new TSM (AIX) server. Whenever you use the STK
libraries, you are forced to use the ACSLS software also. We do have a tape

Sorry if this is an FAQ, I've spent a bit of time looking but haven't found
a definitive answer.

Is this possible:

TSM 3.7.x on Solaris
   connected to
SAN switch (don't know what model, but assume it's a supported one)
   connected to
StorageTek PowderHorn (9840 drives, ACSLS controlled)

>From a quick look at the Redbook (Using Tivoli Storage Manager in a SAN
environment), SCSI libraries are supported from TSM 3.7 onwards, but I can't
find any mention of ACSLS.

Has anyone done it? Tried it and failed?

This is the configuration I am expected to implement, and I don't have much
experience of SANs, so any hand-holding would be appreciated.

Re: Swapping Tape Drive

2001-02-27 Thread Miles Purdy

Hi Salam,
make sure you set the capacity of the drive(s) to 'drive', if your going to be using
the green (5gb) and red (7gb) tapes.
Modify the '3570' device class and set format to 'drive' not '3570B' nor '3570C'.

Note that the drives are not replaced, it is just a chip and firmware that get
installed.

Re: TDP For Domino DB

Steve,

Please call IBM/Tivoli support.
We need to get a trace to see what is going on.

In the mean time, the syntax for the command-line
client is in the User's Guide. You can also
enter the command: "domdsmc help"
to show you what the syntax is.

This is with TDP GUI on NT 4. Our Tivoli server sits on AIX 4.3.3. I've
tried active and inactive. I also tried to sort the list by clicking on the
list headers at the top and nothing happens. I've not tried the command
line, as I'm unsure of the syntax. That will be my next step.

Steve,

Is this with the TDP for Domino GUI on Windows NT/2000?

Are you showing active and inactive?
Have you tried using the command-line client?

You really need to call IBM/Tivoli service to pursue this further.
We may need to get a trace to see what is happening.

Subject: TDP For Domino DB

Anyone out there ever have any trouble with TDP for Domino losing restore
capabilities for DBs that start with a certain letter. Ours won't list any
past the letter "D". The way the scroll bar works, it doesn't show all DBs
in a single scroll, so it populates database names when you get to the
bottom of the list it provides (I guess this is meant to be a time saver),
but ours isn't populating. This happens on all folders that have a large
number of files in it.

Only 1 writable side in an Optical Cartridge.

2001-02-27 Thread Hernando Ramirez

Hi !

I am having troubles with an Optical Library attached
to a TSM Server for AIX-RS/6000.

Environment:

Operating System: AIX 4.3
System Model: IBM,7025-F50
Server Type : TSM for AIX-RS/6000
Server Version : 4.1.0.0
Library Type: SCSI ( Automated Library ) with
two drives.
Library Model : Optical Library IBM 3995 C60
Device Type Used: OPTICAL
Recording Format: 5200MB
Media Used : IBM Rewritable Optical Disk
Cartridges ( P/N : 59H4786 )

Every time the server or an administrator defines a
new optical volume ( private or scratch ), it is
created by TSM with only 1 writable side despite the
fact it is being used a two-sided 5.25-inch rewritable
optical cartridge with both sides not write-protected
and with its capacity fully recognized ( 5200MB ).
So, every time a volume reaches the 50% mark in its
Pct. Util. the server issues the message ANR8462I (
End-of-Side reached for optical volume ) and then the
whole transaction fails because according to the
server there is no space available, that is, the
server does not access the second side of the volume
in order to complete the transaction ( backup or
archive ).

- Why the server does not recognize as writable the
second side of the cartridges used ?

- On what other parameters the number of writable
sides per volume depend, besides the device type
configured ?

- What has to be done to make the server able to
recognize as writable the second side of the volumes
defined?

Please, any clue about how to overcome such a problem
will be greatly appreciated.

Any other needed info about the nature of the problem
will be immediately given.

Regards,

Hernando Ramirez Castilla

Unixware7

2001-02-27 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

I have one node that the admin installed the Unixware client so we could
start backing it up. For whatever reason that node would hit the TSM server
every 10 minutes with 22 sessions in a row (Below) with no transfer of data,
just start and stop.
02/22/01 14:56:23 ANR0406I Session 10581 started for node SAICAUDIO

(Unixware 7).

I had the administrator get a command line prompt and do a q sched. It asked
for a username, which we left blank, and then entered the password. The
server returned the schedule and the scheduler was able to start on the
client. So here is last nights first try for a backup:

02/26/01 23:12:22 ANR0403I Session 1625 ended for node SAICAUDIO
(Unixware 7).

My experience with the protocol violation error is that the password is
incorrect. It looks as though the session started properly then ended. We
have not seen this behavior on any of the other Unix clients and I was
wondering if there is something different about the way the Unixware client
works. If anyone can give some insight it would be appreciated.

TSM with Compaq TL891

2001-02-27 Thread Jonas Nilsson / dimac.net

Hello !

Im not sure im in the rigth forum(listserver) but i'll try this anyway:

I recently installed TSM 4.1 (4.1.1.0) on a Compaq DL380 server with
attached DLT library TL891 running Windows2000 Server.. My problem is that
TSM won't label my tapes.. (looks like it doesn't find any tapes) If I use
the Media Labeling Wizard it shows just an empty chart wich is not
editable.. If use Command line interface i get the following:

Command:
LIBVOLUME LB4.0.0.4 SEARCH=YES LABELSOURCE=BARCODE CHECKIN=SCRATCH
OVERWRITE=YES
Log:
16:18:33 ANR8801I LABEL LIBVOLUME process 2 for library LB4.0.0.4 completed;

Process 2 for LABEL LIBVOLUME running in the BACKGROUND completed with
completion state SUCCESS at 16:18:33.

I've also tried manual labeling (without BARCODE option) wich sort of end up
the same way..

Im running the TSM device drivers (NOT the NT native).. The devices are
identified correctly and no faults reported in any logs...

Have I missed something in the configuration or has someone experinced the

I would suggest after upgrading the drives that you do a reboot of AIX machine so it

Check to see if your TSM scheduler is running on the client. Look in the
Services list for the name you gave the scheduler service. If it is not
running, start it. (Right-clicking on the service name will give you a
menu.) If it won't start or stay started, check to see how long the name
of the service is. There used to be an NT bug that prevented services
with names longer than 14 characters from running. I have a customer
that ran across exactly the same situation on Win2K a couple of weeks
ago. DO NOT rename the service; that won't fix it. You have to delete
the service, and then build a new one with a shorter name.

Re: FIVE questions for TSM 4.1.2

2001-02-27 Thread Matthew A. Bacchi

George,
I'm not really sure what the difference is, I'm guessing that the SSA
controller needs to support Fast-Write Cache, and I believe it's a chip on the
controller with memory(cache) for doing this. For example if I run the
following command:

# lscfg -vl ssa0
  DEVICELOCATION DESCRIPTION

  ssa0 10-68 IBM SSA 160 SerialRAID Adapter
  (14109100)

Part Number. 27H1204
FRU Number.. 34L5388
Serial Number...S0157201
EC LevelE28728
ManufacturerIBM053
ROS Level and ID8300
Loadable Microcode Level05
Device Driver Level.00
Displayable Message.SSA-ADAPTER
Device Specific.(Z0)SDRAM=128
Device Specific.(Z1)CACHE=32
Device Specific.(Z2)UID=08005AEBED5A
Device Specific.(YL)P2-I3/Q1

You see it's a model 160 adapter, and in the Z0 and Z1 fields it has the
amount of SDRAM and CACHE on board the controller. Check yours out and see
what it has.

Re: Window Client - Time Change bug

2001-02-27 Thread Wayne T. Smith

Which Windows client to distribute/install?

I've been waiting and looking and waiting and looking for *many*
months. If one seems just right, either you haven't looked at its known
problems, or a killer problem will appear tomorrow, or you live with
warts on a particular machine.

I'm not sure which bothers me more: pummelling of the VM server
customers or the poorly designed, implemented and tested Windows
client.

I used to find it unbelievable that I couldn't get an audit trail from an ad-
hoc gui backup (I still do, as the backup interface has worsened in
recent versions), but now that I can't find any version to recommend to
all my windows users, I fear "enterprise backup" will fall by the
wayside for a return to a multitude of local solutions, none of which will
include Tivoli nor IBM.

Suggestions most welcome, please.

Re: reclamation vs backup stgpool

2001-02-27 Thread Kyle Payne

Arnaud,
One point that may have been missed is not all jobs can be preempted. From
the manual:

The following are high priority operations that can preempt operations for a
mount point:
Backup database
Restore
Retrieve
HSM recall
Export
Import

The following lists operations that can be preempted and are listed in order
of priority. The server selects the lowest priority operation to preempt,
for example reclamation.
Move data
Migration from disk to sequential media
Backup, archive, or HSM migration
Migration from sequential media to sequential media
Reclamation

-

Note that things in the top list will preempt things in the bottom list.
The bottom list shows you in what order the preemption would happen. Or if
those jobs in the bottom were running at the same time which one would get
the boot.

Note that the jobs in the bottom don't preempt anything. So even though
Move Data has a higher priority that Reclamation it won't preempt a
reclamation job in order to run. However, if a restore comes along and all
drives are used by move data's and reclamations then a reclamation job would
get the boot.

higher priority than reclamation, so why do I have this problem ? (

There is documentation in the admin guides that show the priorities that
tape operations follow. Restores are at the top of the food chain,
followed by several others (including reclamation), with all backups
(including client and storage pool) at the bottom of the list. Whatever
is higher in the priority list will take precedence over those
operations that are lower.

This makes sense when you consider what is most important in a
backup/recovery system. Restores are the primary function, while cleanup
and bookkeeping jobs are not as important. As for backups, they can be
done anytime there is a drive available.

DLT Tape capacity - I'm stumped

2001-02-27 Thread Marita Gonsalves

Hello all :
About 3 weeks ago, we upgraded our tape libraries from a DLT 4000 to a DLT
8000 (ADIC Faststor 22).
On the hardware side, I've set the density to 40c on the tapes (all
Fujifilm DLTIV's) I reclaim. I then do a "label libvol..." before I check
it in. On the software side, I've set the devclass format to DLT40C.
While the tape is being written to, I see an estimated capacity of 40GB's.
However, once it's full, the capacity is approx. 35 GB's.

When I talked with TSM's tech support, I was told that I should get atleast
80 GB's on a tape. They couldn't tell me why I was only getting 35 GB's. I
went through this listserv's archives and only came across one posting
titled "DLT8000 experience?" by Jesper Kjer on May 12, 2000 where he said
that half the time tapes do not format at 40 GB's. In my case, it seems to
be all the time. Is there something I may have missed in my configuration?
This is really driving me crazy and I'd appreciate any suggestions to fix
this problem. I'm running TSM 3.7.3.6 on NT 4.0.

Howdy Marita... Does the new drive support compression and is it enabled or do
you have it turned on at the TSM client? If you compress in both places, there

It sounds like it would be a two step process: 1) output the Backup Set to
a
file then 2) burn the file to a CD.

It may require defining a storage pool (DEF STG pool_name DISK ...), then
creating one volume in that pool (DEF VOL pool_name volume_name ...), and
creating the backup set to that volume (DEF BACKUPSET node_name
bckup_set_name DEV=device_class_name VOL=volume_name). You may also need
to
define a new device class (DEF DEV device_class_name DEVT=FILE MAXCAP=???M
DIR=directory_name).

Hi all-

I have been asked to create a client backup set for the purpose of
restoring a client in the event that the TSM Server is not available via
the network.
I am supposed to burn the backup set to cd. This way I can walk up to the
client, put in the cd, and restore locally from the cd.

Here is my question: Where is the default output of the backup set? Where
does it go -- to tape? Is there a way to create the backup set onto the
hard disk rather than tape?
How does the Device Class fit into this?
I am trying to figure out how I am supposed to transfer the backup set to
cd-rom. One more issue: the cd Burner is NOT local to the tsm server, it
is accross the network.

Tsm server is 3.7.4 on AIX RS/6000.

You don't have to create a new storage pool for this process.
All you have to do is define a device class of type=file and maxsize of
640MB. (If it needs to fit on a cd-rom)

Then run the generate backupset command using the new devclass.
I would name it file640 to make it easy to remember.

Hello Wayne

I Think that 4.1.1 is most likely the best one at this time. That is
the fixtest for 4.1.1 which is 4.1.1.16. I have found that the fixtests
appear to work better then the releases with the windows nt client.

I wonder if the fix for 4.1.2 will include the promised rewrite
of the client to handle machines with multiple code-pages/sets in use?

The most stable client over time seems to have been the 2.1.6g fixtest,
but this abends once in while and I suspect would not work on windows
2000.

Re: Query Scratch Volumes

2001-02-27 Thread Joe Faracchio

Boy! When they say there's more than one way to skin a cat its true .

One more:

if you sometimes accidently checkin scratches as Private
you can find them, along with any truly Private tapes check'd in but not
mounted nor used even once with :

select volume_name,status from libvolumes where last_use is null -
and status='Private'

that 'is null' was tough to figure out for use SQL neubies !!!

Re: DLT Tape capacity - I'm stumped

2001-02-27 Thread Joe Faracchio

Or to put it another way:

1) did they tell you the tape capacity is 80G after compression or
   when NATIVE??

2) if you compress at the client (and almost everyone does?!?!!) then you
will only see NATIVE capacities reported.

I've seen this for DLT IV's (35G) in the past and presently I see 20G for
my 3590's and that's native. But sometimes I
get a client-joker that's not compressing at all then I
end up with 'ringers' in the bunch that say 30 and 40 Gigs for the 3590's.

Re: ADSM Activity Log

I think this is defined in terms of "retention period". The size of the log
will vary depending on how many days you set your retention period to.
You can view your current setting via: q st
