Richard, Maarten - many thanks for your feedback and the ensuing discussion. I am rather new on the uC scene, other than having done some VERY simple stuff with AVRs 3 or 4 years ago. Having been working through the 'C for Dummies Desktop Reference', I am now working through 'C and the 8051' (lots of things have started to make sense since I started this book) and am about to build myself a 'learning board' based on the DS89C450.
