Ian,

I did some testing of the VMWare check for Servers Alive back in December,
2007. I was able to get it working well enough to detect if a virtual machine
was up or down, but after the testing was completed, I talked about the check
with my contact in our infrastructure group and couldn't come up with a good
use for the check. If we wanted to know if the machine was running or not, we
would just ping the box. We have had problems in the past with VMWare where
the virtual machine would be up and running, but would not respond to any
network requests, so the VMWare check wouldn't detect the failure.

I've just tried to get the check up and running again, but I can't remember all
the details on the config. I do remember it required the VMWare-vm com api,
which I think Dirk had to send me as it wasn't available from the vmware
website anymore. Anyways, my config is now giving the message "No connection
could be made because the target machine actively refused it." Something has
changed with the VMWare server since I last tested against it, and I'm not sure
what.

Are you also trying towards ESX?

Maybe that Brett Hanson can give some advice, he tested this towards ESX 3.02
back in December 2007

Noop, it doesn't work for me either.
And when I try to configure the test I wonder why you would like to test if a
machine is up on a specific host. If you use ESX, you most likely have HA and
you don't care on which host a machine is running. To test if a machine is up
and running, use ping and diskspace checks instead. Or am I missing something??

Ummm.... you're not giving me much to go on here! Is this check working for
anyone else?

Well I can't tell you.
This is what the Vmware APIs are returning, they don't tell us why

OK - so why am I getting "Invalid arguments: Login failed."?

Don't say "because your arguments are invalid..." ;-)

I think it was pointing to the ESX server when the beta testers did testing with
it.

Hi,

I'm trying the new VMWare check, but I'm having difficulty connecting. I'm using
ESX. What I'm trying to do initially is bring up the list of virtual machines to
choose from, from within the check configuration screen.

If I point to the ESX host server itself, I get this error:

      Invalid arguments: Login failed.

If I point to VirtualCenter server, I get this:

Network failure: Cannot connect to host [our servername]: No connection
could be made because the target machine actively refused it

Which should I be pointing to? Why isn't it working?

Cheers,

Ian
