Well, after starting Sage (on virtualbox), I get straight into sage 
notebook and there doesn't seem to be anything else I can do or anywhere I 
can go.

(Actually, I get first to a black screen, and when I right click, it opens 
the openbox menu and gives me the error; invalid output from pipe-menu...
and then takes me to the notebook)

With the older version (in VMware),  it would open in a desktop from where 
I could access the notebook OR sage (the terminal) and also gedit from the 
application menu.
(really like in a virtual machine should be no?)

into the notebook...

If really there's a way to use a text editor (without using the notebook) 
that'd be great. Otherwise, I think I'll stick to old version...
