Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea.  The vmware image you're
running, is just a slightly customized version of the debian server image
from the vmware website. It's fairly unlikely I can help at all with
debuging your problem, though it's possible its related to:
   (1) the version of Windows you're using,
   (2) the version of vmware player (or vmware workstation) you're using
   (3) the precise hardware of your computer (type of Pentium chip,
memory, etc.),
   (4) anti-virus software you have installed.

Some things you could try in order to run SAGE include:
   (1) install the cygwin version instead
   (2) try to install any linux vmware image at all (there are many on
the vmware website); if
one works, you could install SAGE into it, or at least let me know
which one worked.
