Good question. It seems that the development of MeatAxe is not very active, which might be a minus for using it in Sage, and which is the reason why I did not ask. According to http://www.math.rwth-aachen.de/~MTX/download.html, the current official release is 2.4.13, which dates from May 2009. There is an experimental release 2.5, which is older than the newest eight (!) official releases: November 2003. And there is the release 2.2.4, which is identical with 2.2.3, except that the licence became GPL2+. That release had been created when I asked for "GPL2+", so that I could use it in my cohomology spkg. That release was made July 2009 and is thus younger than the current official or the experimental releases. But now, as you mention it, I certainly should ask Michael Ringe about it. Doing it now.
