It's definitely wise to approach this carefully. I have 10.7 installed (as an
upgrade) on a laptop, and there are some glitches that need explanation.

First, Xcode 3.2.6 *is* supported on 10.7. What is not supported is
*installation* of Xcode 3.2.6.

Second, in my case, after the installation, "normal" access to the build tools
is gone: the tool chain is no longer present in "/usr". The chain does live in
the "/Developer" directory, though. I don't know whether this was intentional
or accidental.

Also, there are changes to Terminal that defy explanation. I haven't tracked
the problems down, but since (at least for me) shell usage is wired into my
lizard brain, it takes some work to get used to the changes.

According to traffic on the Xcode list, most people have renamed the "3.2.6"
"/Developer" directory to something else, and then installed Xcode 4. Once you
are running 10.7, you do have access to Xcode 4.1, but apparently not before.

I have not figured out how to "reconnect" Xcode 3.2.6 to "/usr", so building
Sage is not yet possible (for me). FWIW, I found this

<http://anatomicwax.tumblr.com/post/7906770311/installing-xcode-3-2-6-on-lion>
which discusses one man's attempt to install Xcode 3 on 10.7.

I think a a reasonable approach, for those who have the luxury of multiple
Macs, is to install on a lesser-used one, so as not to disrupt your normal
workflow. Then you can spend some time getting used to new work patterns, and
figuring out how to live with the new beast.
