I don't have any problems with people getting paid for sage related stuff (selling service contract, implementing features, fixing bugs) as long as the output of it is getting back to the community. I mean, someone working fulltime on sage related stuf, and improving sage along the way, also deserves to have a salary.
I guess there are probably also professors out there who contribute to sage during their working ours, the line between sage development and research is sometimes quite thin. And for me there is not so much difference between the two cases. > If the money went to some Sage developers and not others, then I > foresee some big problems, though. I don't know how this would be > handled, and I assume that some people would get pissed off and leave > the project over it. On the other hand, it would be nice to be able > to hire talented programmers to do dirty work that current Sage > developers don't want to do. > I really like the idea that there are some people working on sage wich are paid to get the dirty work done. So I think a non-profit company selling service contracts could actually be a great way to improve sage especially when the money raised in that way is also used to fix bugs and do some dirty work. The existence of such a company would probably also lead to adding more people who are programmers in the first place and mathematicians in the second place to the sage developement community. Which I think could be a valuable addition since now most sage developers are a mathematician in the first place and then after that also a programmer. For me I guess the intent of the people making money with sage is the most important. If they do it to improve the sage community as a whole, and get more funding for sage developement than it's ok. If they do it just to make money then I would get pissed. -- To post to this group, send an email to sage-devel@googlegroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to sage-devel+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com For more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/sage-devel URL: http://www.sagemath.org
