though pkg-config exists on both Solaris (even my March 2005 release)
and Linux systems.
So what will happen on Linux?
I mean what will happen on OS X?
It seems there may need to be another way on OS X at least to determine how to
link freetype and possibly all the other ten packages which create .pc files and
put them in /export/home/drkirkby/32/sage-4.4.3/local/lib/pkgconfig
Setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH may not be sufficient on OS X.
