The pari problems were a result of me stupidly not rebuilding pari
after fixing the GMP problem.  Now that I fixed the GMP problem and
rebuilt *everything* from scratch, I have the same failures as you
above.

No problem -- mystery solved.  Of course, if you want to try to fix
the mysterious bug that causes the doctest failures you listed above,
that would be heroic.  (It has stumped us all so far.)
