I think it's not wise yet to deprecate this; if the economy had been
any worse I would definitely still have an OSX PPC running X.4, with
no institutional funds available to upgrade it, and I am certain there
would be others in this position in the education market.  If they
don't even have binaries they can use, that would be very
unfortunate.  After all, many places have not really rolled out X.6
until they are sure it's stable enough.

Interestingly, my new computer was in the shop for a weekend recently,
and at least 4.1.2.alpha2 built fine on it, though it took an ETERNITY
because of the building of documentation - probably at least 50%
longer than in the past.  Is there any way to have a switch during
building of Sage to turn off building of the documentation?  Even on
my newer machine it adds a significant amount of time that is
sometimes inconvenient - particularly when doing I think will be a
fast sage -upgrade.
