/var/tmp doesn't sound like something our build system uses normally.
IMHO all happens in SAGEROOT/build/sage-distro/


I am using /var/tmp/sage-10.9 as my SAGEROOT.  So the build system is not 
using /var/tmp intentionally.  It just happens to be the directory 
containing my SAGEROOT.
