Hello,

the release cycle has started and so far only 5 tickets were closed.
Since we update clisp (which is tricky) and also updated cremona.spkg
to take over the functionality of mwrank this might be a little
rough to get right on the first try. The tarball is available at

http://sage.math.washington.edu/home/mabshoff/sage-2.9.alpha0.tar

[170MB] - the size increase is due to the new clisp.spkg. We are
investigating if we can shrink the package down again to its
original size.

We need more reviews for patches tagged against 2.9 and later
milestones. A list of tickets with patches:

#444 [with patch] solve the rubik's cube fast!
#980 [with patch] random_element() for multivariate polynomials
#1119 [with patch] EllipticCurve.random_element for char=2
#1162 [with patch] fix issues in RealField <-> RQDF conversions
#1237 [with patch] E.torsion_order() fails on curves with big
      coefficients !!
#1239 [with patch] Wrap Simon's new gp two descent code
#1267 [with patch] documentation for piecewise does not show up in
      notebook
#1340 [with patch] %cython broken if directory name contains spaces
#1363 [with patch] complex intervals should have a sqrt() method
#1393 [with patch] is_integral_domain may return incorrect answer
#1394 [with patch] make plot documentation readable in graph.py
#1395 [with patch] notebook(directory="foo/") misbehaves
#1404 [with patch] bug in %latex feature in the notebook

Tickets that ought to be invalidated:

#1130 [with patch] point counting for elliptic curves over non-prime
      finite fields

Tickets with negative review:

#1155 [with bundle, with negative review] PermutationGroup coercion
      bug
#1171 [with patch, with negative review] _new() method for quadratic
      field elements
#1186 [with patch, with negative review] Charpoly of a matrix of
      polynomials sometimes breaks
#1189 [with patch, with negative review] SymPy <-> SAGE automatic
      conversion
#1258 [with bundle, with negative review] additions and changes to
      linear_codes

Please make sure patches are relative to 2.5.18 or a later alpha
relase. Obviously patches are welcome for tickets without solution.

Cheers,

Michael

Merged in alpha0:

#1002: Bill Page: Update clisp to the 2.43 release
#1256: Michael Abshoff: mwrank*.spkg now redundant, included in
       cremona*.spkg
#1337: Carl Witty: technically incorrect code in integer_mod.pyx
#1403: John Cremona: mwrank has termination issues
#1405: Michael Abshoff, Carl Witty: gcc 4.3-snapshot: cremona
       compile fixes.
