If it wasn't GPL, I probably wouldn't be contributing. That's not to say I couldn't be persuaded to release certain things under a less restrictive license. I just feel the GPL is the safest default option for me in terms of protecting my time investment. I guess for me it's important for the same reason that attribution is so important in academic circles.
