I remember discussing this issue a good many years ago, and eventually 
agreeing with Chris that this was the best way to go.  I'm sketchy on 
the details at the moment.

Highlight a you go live playback stuff is one of those things that dives 
right at the heart of some impressively complicated code.  I remember 
just kludging it all to hell at one point, which was probably during the 
Qt 4 port.

Anything that involves note colors scares me to contemplate.
