Yeah, I stand corrected. It does have to be in Performance mode. I think your problem is actually that you've confused 'Instrument' and 'Patch' inside Rosegarden. What you want to be doing is looking at the 'Instrument Parameters' panel at the bottom, make sure 'Bank' is ticked and the dropdown beside it is set to the right bank. Make sure 'Program' is ticked - this dropdown is the one you want to change the patch with, not 'Instrument' at the top. Also note that if you're using a synthesizer that relies on a fixed MIDI channel, make sure that 'Channel' is set to 'Fixed' instead of 'Auto'. This does apply to the JV1010 as well to some extent - some patches, e.g. "Assalt Organ" have effects which only work when they are played through channel 1.
