Thank you, that's a good tip! It seems as if both of my problems (this one and 
the one about anacrusis after a repeat) were unlikely to get fixed because they 
essentially stem from the notation editor and the MIDI sequencer not playing 
nicely with each other. 

For the purposes of creating and printing notation in these particular two 
cases, I have visited the dark side ;) and used Denemo. I still like 
Rosegarden a lot, but one of the nice things about the world of Linux is that 
there is often another application around that can help out of the cul-de-sac.
