Actually, rpm will uninstall itself - been there, done that :-(.  I had a
problem with what looked like multiple copies of rpm being installed, so I
installed one and shot myself in the foot.  Luckily I was able to just ftp a
copy of the rpm executable from another system and install the rpm package
from that.

I agree that tracking down the problem is what you want to do.  Having a 
corrupt rpm database or missing items in the database is no fun since you'll
have all sorts of dependency problems that will get you later on, and you'll
naturally have problems with up2date.
