THANK you for the dmesg. I wish more people provided such details.
This is sort of a shot in the dark, but in older machines, I have
better luck attaching CD drives as slaves to hda, rather than masters
on their own controllers. Have you tried that? My experience
suggests that it might help. In this case, since it worked for a
while and then stopped, perhaps you should suspect a bad IDE
controller.
