This is a weird one, for me at least.
I have a little Gateway 2000 P133 minitower w/ 16MB of RAM, a 3.2GB HD,
a CDROM, and a ZIP100 drive. This is my 'beater' box, for testing and
playing around. I installed RedHat 7.0 (KRUD) via the cdrom a while
back, and then later added a few packages from the CD's. Somewhere
along the line, though, the cdrom stopped working. Any attempt to mount
a CD returns a complaint that no medium was found. I tried changing the
CDROM drive out, since it would just sit there flashing the access
light. Different drive, same problem. I tried doing a reinstall, since
I had stripped this system down, and was afraid I had somehow messed
something up. The RedHat installer can't find a CD in the drive either.
During boot, all three IDE devices, the HD, the CDROM, and the ZIP, all
show up in the BIOS. All three show up initially during startup in
dmesg:
hda: WDC AC23200L, ATA DISK drive
hdc: WEARNES CDD-820, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdd: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive
But the part where it tries to access the cdrom only gives this
(spartan) output:
cdrom: open failed.
The only thing in dmesg that catches my attention, but I'm not sure if
it was there before or not, and how exactly it would impact things is
this:
PIIX: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 38
PIIX: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
PIIX: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
If anyone could help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. If
any one needs the complete dmesg output, I am attaching it at the end of
this message. Please CC replies to me so as to make sure I get them!
Thanks!
TIA,
Monte
