| Don't think you need to update GNOME as well, but it can't hurt of course.
You shouldn't need to. X is X, protocolwise. The whole point is that it
work this way. I should be able to invoke GNOME clients on a redhat box
and display them on a Solaris X server. And I can.

Updating rpm is easy. RH62 comes with rpm v4 I think. The very latest rpm v3 (3.0.5
AFAIR) groks v4 rpm files. So, on a RH6.1 box for exmaple (having done exactly this a
couple of days ago) you go:
fetch rpm-3.0.5 from the RedHat 6.1 UPDATES directory and install:
rpm -Uv rpm-3.0.5.....
fetch rpm-4.whatever-it-is from the Redhat 6.2 distro and install
with your cool new rpm v3:
rpm -Uv rpm-4.........
Mission accomplished. You can now be happy with the XFree86 rpm files.
| Otherwise, XF86 4.0.1 is a major step forward, and IMO works much better
| than 3.3.x.
Aside from the internals, which sound much cleaner, how much nicer is it
externally? (I sepak as one considering running it.)

The best answer was the one Leon Lederman (director of Fermilab) gave to Phil
Donahue when Donahue badgered him with "What does it do for the defense of
the country?" Leaving aside the absurdity of Donahue playing the hawk,
Lederman stood up on a chair and shouted him down, then replied,
"It helps make it worth defending."
