Sorry I have to but in here (currently teaching a Programming
Languages course).

Fortran hasn't been considered "cutting edge" since the 1960s. I'm not
convinced that, aside from its interactivity, Basic ever has been thus
considered.

C took time to catch on partly because it was so closely wedded (in
people's minds at any rate) to the Unix OS.

C really came into its own with the advent of the PC. Assembler was
messy (still is) and BASIC - well, really....

Enter C: portable, small and efficient.

The bootstrap process is built into ROM and there's no reason why it
shouldn't boot a language interpreter/system which then load the OS on
top.
