Have you purchased a copy of RH? If so, I wouldn't worry. Your entitled
to 30 days install support. $50 is small change for the insurance it
provides.

True, and understandable.

Well, I know how that is, but it is honestly a bit ironic. How much was
your SMP box? :) That's not an entry-level system, especially when
entry-level HDD cost like $129.
Incidentally, I was considering an SMP box, as the price has drastically
dropped. Do you find a noticable real-life improvement in performance?

Of course its possible to do the upgrade. And frankly, if your upgrading
_only_ from 4.2 to 5.0, and haven't done any serious modifications, I
really doubt you will have much trouble.
We're 5 months into this release, and I'm sure thousands of people have
done an upgrade. If you were talking about upgrading from a 2.0 release,
I might suspect there to be a problem or two. But 4.2 is well known, and
5.0 is quite established now.

Yes, I'm sure people have had problems with the upgrade. I'm also sure
that we didn't see all the bug reports that were posted by registered
users, and the fixes RH made to their most recent install that fixes those
problems.
Yes, 5.1 I would imagine will have a better install/upgrade program.
If you have a backup device, copy your most important files to that first.

Sure.
