I'm not worried about stability per se. I'm worried about the upgrade
process screwing things up. I've heard that the upgrade process is not
transparent, in the sense that packages get updated and the amount of
tweaking to get the installation to the same configuration state is
minimal.
Using 2.1.x kernels is a calculated risk I've taken, particularly since I
was not impressed with the SMP support in 2.0.x. Besides, the more people
are testing SMP code, the better.

I forgot to mention that I am limited by hard disk space.
Unfortunately I can't afford the luxury of more hard drive space right
now.

I've tried this, but I have not been successful so far. I will be trying
this again. But RedHat claims that it is possible to upgrade 4.2 ->5.0.
I've not heard encouraging things about the upgrade process. I know a
clean install is almost flawless, but I am not willing to lose a working
system. At the same time, I do want to upgrade. Hence I am asking
whether the upgrade process will be improved in 5.1.

Thanks for the response, Dave.
