I have a RH7.0 box with kernel 2.4.0.

I have recompiled the rawhide SRPMs for XFree 4.0.2 and Mesa 3.4 and
installed them.
I'm not getting hw accel.
Permissions on /dev/dri/* are fine.
What I get is this:
[dkelson@thud dkelson]$ export LIBGL_DEBUG=1
[dkelson@thud dkelson]$ /usr/bin/gears
